I'm having a real problem, folks. I want to include my wife in my hd obsession, but there are so few releases that appeal to girlie women such as my wife, it's very difficult. When will this finally change?!

Do you mean chick flicks? I find most girls these day enjoy a variety of different genres and not just limited to corny romance movies.
I love the fact that my GF loves horror/gory movies ala Saw style!

Neutral :D

Blu Ray 33
HD DVD 33

Last Bought:Half Baked (HD DVD), Dazed & Confused (HD DVD) & Breakfast Club (HD DVD)

My wife likes more than just chick flicks, but unfortunately, nothing on the list appealed to her. She asked me do they have "Hunt for Red October, Lord of The Rings, Indiana Jones, Gladiator, Back To The Future, Schindlers List, etc." The top tier PQ movies in that thread she termed, "stupid."

High Def is best shown with BIG stuff, explosions, action etc.......
So obviously, Girlie flicks become for the most part, 2nd fiddle.

I can totally understand that, because I've said to her:

"OK we HAVE to watch THIS on my tv(ALA King Kong), and we'll to watch that(The Breakup or similar) on your tv (my TV was/is MUCH bigger, especially my 115" projected image)".

There are a few movies, that are what I would consider unwatchable to me(in HD, chick flick times2), that are available in HD DVD.

I want MY Cigarettes, MINE Nurse Ratched!!

Let's see, you have "The Breakup", "The Sting" (For women over 40 that remember Redford and Newman), "The Architect", "Rumor has It", "Meet the Parents", and "Lake House" just off the top of my head.

Look harder.

I find a similar problem most of the titles release so far have been Rated R, horror or violent films. Me and my wife prefer family movies. We have enjoyed Ant Bully, Superman, Batman, IM3 and a few others so far. We mostly like adventure, comedy or dramas as long as they don't get too violent. Hoping there will be lots of classics re-released to HD soon.

The Break-Up, Brokeback Mountain, Casablanca, Rumor Has It, You Me & Dupree, The Sting, The Lake House, Adventures of Robin Hood, Hollywoodland, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Failure to Launch, Million Dollar Baby, Derailed. These are titles that women may enjoy.

Just pick up The Scorpion King starring The Rock. That should appease her.

Once again I am soooooo glad I have my, hot, intelligent, funny, LOW MAINTAINENCE wife. When I went to Target last night I asked the wife what she would like me to get on HD DVD, Van Helsing or An American Werewolf in London if they have either of them otherwise get what you want. We started with similar tastes and after 13 years of marriage our taste in movies is pretty much identical.

When dealing with women that are not my wife I've found its best to play to the woman's point of view. Braveheart sounds like a man's movie until you explain that he did it all for love.

This can be done with a number of top PQ HD DVDs:

The Corpse Bride is just a Romantic Comedy
King Kong is essentially a love triangle
Seabiscuit is a feel good film
Aeon Flux is a woman's action flick, every woman I know likes movies where women beat up on men for most of the feature.
You could also sell her on any of the Mummy movies based on Brendan Frasier or The Rock.

If you can't sell her on any of those I feel for you man because it means your woman has a very narrow scope of films she will watch. At that point your only option would be to play the feelings card. You know something to the extent of, Darling I know The Departed is not really your type of movie, but it's important to me and I want to share the experience with you. I feel like it could be a growing experience for our relationship, et cetera, et cetera

I've been thinking about this lately, cause I know where your coming from, most of the girls I know don't all like violent lets kick ass blow up shoot and kill everything in sight movies. I guess that doesn't leave much out there
They need to get more out so women can get involved and go out and buy an HD player. As it stands right now I can't see any women doing that because of such a small selection.

There are a few movies mentioned that would appeal to women, most of them romantic comedies like Failure to Launch and You, Me and Dupree, but I suppose when you look at the target market of people into HD, or technology in general, it is overwhelmingly a male domain, so most of the products will be geared towards the people who buy it, men.

Has anyone bought anything like "finding neverland" from japan? I love that movie but have no idea about how much it is in our dollars or if you can turn the subs off, etc.

On Blu ray I had to sit through The Devil Wears Prada and The Holiday. Believe me, be careful, because sometimes you get what you wish for.

Haha, I thought Prada was pretty good, but the Holiday was a snoozer. Only Kate Winslet could keep that thing from being unwatchable.

My wife is waiting for Pride and Prejudice. No not the movie but the BBC series. On sd it's pathetic looking doesn't matter if it's anamorphic. The colors are so piss poor it's time this series got a remake it deserved. Heck, I liked it but despise the washed out blurry sd version.

Sounds like she actually has mostly really good taste. Have you suggested Casablanca, Robin Hood, or other classic movies? If you have a Blu-ray player, there's also Kingdom of Heaven, which is another Ridley Scott film. And I disagree wholeheartedly with other posters in this thread on The Holiday, which is, IMO, the best chick flick to come out in several years, ripping a few pages from Nora Ephron's playbook.

LOL...it's funny you say that. My wife is also a HUGE fan of that mini-series and would love if it came out on HD-DVD. I was forced to see it once and it was just long and awful, but Id be able to tolerate it in HD. It's actually amazing the things you can tolerate when they're in HD!

She thinks Casablanca is cheesy, yet loves Pride and Prejudice...go figure! We don't have a blu-ray player yet and probably wont until they come down more in price.

That sums up my experience also. A/V really is a GUY thing. I'd almost wager there are 100 male AVS members for each female member. Shame, isn't it?

Yeah HD makes the mundane seem spectacular. Aeon Flux is probably the best example movie wise for me. A movie I would never have bought or rented in sd. But in HD it looks spectacular.

i understand the frustration of the original poster. the suggestions made are not exactly the greatest movies... there is not ONE "chick flick" (i hate that term btw) that I would own on HD-DVD as of yet.

I've had my A1 for about 8 months and have purchased "Corpse Bride", "Batman Begins", and "The Departed". The only upcoming possibly exclusive films to HD-DVD I am currently interested in would be "Grindhouse" and the Kill Bill series. I may pick up "Happy Feet", but that would be buying just to buy. Most of my HD viewing comes from Blockbuster online discs.

I look at the Blu-ray lineup and there are not only a ton of "guy" movies I would be buying (Saw 1,2,3, Descent, Rocky Balboa, Casino Royale, Prestige, X-Men 3), but also a lot of "chick flicks" like "The Holiday", "Volver", "Pursuit of Happyness", "Devil Wears Prada"...

SO maybe the best advice would be to buy into Blu-Ray if someone is looking for more female-friendly HD variety (as of now).

I guess for now I'll be happy with my HD-A1 and it's good job in upconverting SD DVDs, but they are still not mistaken for true High Definition.

LOL! hey maybe you're on to something. Maybe a new Sony sales pitch: Blu Ray: the choice for the woman in you (or with you)! I do have a wife but I guess I gave into my feminine side, er, my wife that is. And I got Devil Wears Prada for her. On the HD DVD side I got Lake House. Upcoming will be Dirty Dancing for her and the movie version of Pride and Prejudice.

I have all 3 HD formats and true chick flicks are not plentiful. D-Theater did fairly well, IMO....Lost In Translation, Meet The Parents, Notting Hill, About A Boy, Dr.T. & The Women, Gosford Park. I think Blu has two of the best films women would gravitate towards, Chicago & Devil Wears Prada. However, in total, Blu's releases seem geared toward 19-25 year gamers. My most anticipated release from Universal is Meet The Fochers, whenever.

Comedies are my biggest preference. I love period pieces and historical dramas. Kung Fu fighting movies are what I detest the most. I used to like horror films more but I'm getting burned out on them, proably for all time? I watched The Descent recently. It about made me ill. I think Constantine is about as ill as horror films get. I had a copy and traded it away.

IMO, Blu and HD-DVD are way out'a balance towards gratitously stupid or violent films.

In real life I am Dot Mongur champion of the International Pacman Federation. I don't play the game, I operate it.....no dot is safe from me....
