Aparently we have a major voice and a say on how this "war" goes...we were mentioned as one of the reasons that HD DVD is back on top...KUDOS GUYS!!!

HD DVD is back on top according to Amazon
Posted Apr 17th 2007 12:30PM by Ben Drawbaugh

A few AVS members got together and decided to show their support for HD DVD by organizing to all purchase movies from Amazon on the same day: April 15th. More specifically, many planned to buy Planet Earth on HD DVD. They were successful and as a result now HD DVD is on top according to the Amazon sales rank and the Planet Earth HD DVD is ranked #7 vs Blu-ray's at #22. While this is certainly an interesting result, it just goes to show how easily the Amazon sales ranks can be manipulated. If you missed out on showing your support for your favorite format, you can join in by buying as many titles as you can afford from Amazon for the rest of April, or you can join the next group buy when the Matrix trilogy comes out on May 22nd. In the meantime, we will wait for the next Neilson/Videoscan ranking to assess their success.

It will be over soon as some gamers on the PS3 forum and Krinkle from the AVS forum are coming back with BD buys to bury HD DVD. It will never end!

Amazon must be loving this extra revenue...but if this keeps up B/M stores will say Bad News for HD DVD and BD and Goodbye to both formats.

Gamers only will buy 1-2 discs max. as they won't have money to get games, that what they bought the ps3 for.
It's not a danger at all.

Of course we are the reason. I see HD DVD as the format of choice for movie lovers, where as BD is for the general consumer but hey what do i know.

942 is a nice # of discs, but spread over 4 studios, it nothing. 94200 they would notice.

That article seems to have a rather pro-BD "bent" to it.

Seems designed to "counter-spin" any positive stories before they're out.

For instance, there was no specific "push" to buy Planet Earth, and it hit #4, not #7.

They also say "amazon easy to maipulate", which has been the BD tribe's "spin" here, implying that Amazon is not a credible source.

Not a great story IMO - more like a backhanded compliment.

But the HD DVD camp needs to get some press releases out fast.

Well, the HD DVD rankings are dropping back down now. They are still slightly above Blu-ray, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them hit the same level as Blu or even slightly below that blue line tomorrow.

And I agree it's easy to manipulate the Amazon numbers, given that the purchase pact by a few AVSers can change things so dramatically.

Personally, I think the Amazon buy got hurt bigtime by the Warner 30% off deal.
I know I bought Planet Earth, The Matrix and a couple others from Warner.
I did however, buy 2 titles on Sunday.

It ain't ignorance causes so much trouble; it's folks knowing so much that ain't so

Come to think about it didn't Amazon have a huge BD sale...I wonder if they would do the same for HD DVD?

it funny how the BD group is planning this buy day. HD-DVD owners did it as a commitment to a format we support and stand by. while they are doing it as a way to get back at our sucess, why not to back your format?.

Why don't you contact Engadget HD and show them your muscle and have them change the #7 to #4...it should also be stated as the only HD DVD/BD title to ever enter these waters.

Regardless of what happens, our little experiment worked and it proves there are many folks out there who are willing to spend their hard earned money on the format. Even if the BD folks follow suit - congrats to them. Obviously, both sides are willing to do their part.

It also proves that that both formats are a niche and it only takes the resources of several hundred people to tip the scales.

(Treading lightly...). It has been very clear from many of the comments in the "buy on April 15" posts that a clear goal was to make HD DVD look better than Blu-ray, not simply "support the format".

"Let's bury Blu-ray!". "This will show them!" "Let's stay ahead of Blu-ray the whole month!" etc.

I'm not saying you should or shouldn't do that (whatever floats your boat...), but the "format commitment" false pretense is as transparent as a window. Showing commitment to one format is intertwined with making the "other format" look bad.

I imagine it is that "spirit" that the blu-guys feel compelled to respond to. (me, I buy B & M and never pre-order because I'm impulsive like that and usually get some sort of discount.)

On a neutral note: does anybody else feel incredibly saddened that a small handful of AVSers can influence sales rankings to that degree? Shows just how small the High Def market is...

I'd buy more BD titles, if there was a better selection. I currently have 115 HD DVD's and only 30 Blu Ray discs. Not that I am holding back on BD, but there are not as many good choices as HD DVD.

Not at all.

Look at the DVD sales rankings on Amazon and the titles that the HD-DVD of Planet Earth passed. It's shocking for $70 documentary box set.

It passed the pre-orders for the DVD versions of such eagerly awaited titles such as "The Queen" and "The Last King of Scotland. It's still in the top 10 at Amazon.

Amir sent e-mails to the studios to take a look at this amazing event.

"We did not have business relations with that company, Fuh Yuan."

I believe the success of the HD DVD coordinated buy exceeded the expectations of most people - including me.

It definitely helped put HD DVD sales in the same realm as BD for the top 10, top 25 and top 100, after quite awhile. So this was an across the board success. It's not like it was focused on afew titles. FWIW, the BB near me also seems to be showing a recent uptick in sales of HD DVD - but the get 4 free HD DVD sale is probably driving that.

I just don't see the PS3 being the tour de force it's been hyped up to be. I know there is a disproportionate number of people here that use them as regularly used BD players. But the rest of the world apparently is not. There are some 3 million PS3's in people's hands. That alone should drown out ANY effort by HD DVD and their 100-150K players. Yet HD DVD has remained very competitive.

The article was meant to be neutral and call people's attention to what appears to be manipulated numbers. I have suspected that Amazon's numbers have not been a good example since day one, and was very surprised to see the official numbers confirm the Amazon numbers. I don't think that will be the case this time.

In interest of full disclosure; I am a Blu-ray owner, but have reviewed HD DVD players before, I am currently reviewing the A20 right now.

As for the HD DVD camp, they know what is going on, even if they didn't read it at AVS, but read EngadgetHD as I get emails from them every time they have a correction or want to do an interview. It will be interesting to see how they respond.

What is amazing is that an AVS group buy was able to defeat all those trogan horse PS3's out there. The PS3 was what sold Fox and Disney to support BD exclusively. Maybe this will have them rethink thier position. We can only hope!
