I came home to find a package from Amazon at my door (Feast and Children of Men).

Opened them up to make sure the discs played properly only to see this staring back at me:

The security tag is actually stuck onto the top of the disc (fortunately it's the SD-DVD side). Took about 5 minutes trying to remove it without ruining the disc -- the SD side seems to be pretty bad off (a noticable amount of glue left on the top) but the HD side seems fine (none of the data layer came off with it). I'll have to try it in my A-1 to make sure though.

I've gotta say - I've never seen anything like that happen before. Maybe thats why there have been so many problems with the disc?

LOL thats is very funny!

I would return it?

I have also never seen anything like that before. My guess was all the case was done before the disk was ever put in. I guess not lol.

No I don't think this was the problem. It was likely a manufacturing issue that the facility in question is ironing out. I think that when the security tag was initially placed inside the case it wasn't pressed firmly enough and eventually got loose and ended up sticking to the HD DVD. Rare, but it happens.

I actually had that happen to one of my SD DVDs once a long time ago. I was pissed off but after removing it and cleaning the disc it worked. I wonder why on earth they do that though.

Yeah, too funny. That would probably be a good idea though to stop the thieves who don't mind spending 10 minutes in the store aisle cutting open security stickers to steal the disc itself. Then you could send in a registration card and $5 to the studio for special glue remover to 'enable' access to the SD side.

I've had it happen on SD dvds as well. One time it was on the bottom of the disc and I didn't notice it till I put the dvd on the disc tray and saw that it was sitting lopsided. Probably would've wrecked my player.

I was having people over to watch COM the next night and saw all the reports of people having problems playing the disc so I thought I would make sure it played. When I opened it up I found the exact same thing you did. I exchanged it at bestbuy and made sure to open it while there. Its the only time I've had that happen.

I just received the xa2 today (upgraded from an hd d1). The first disc I threw in was COM and sure enough I got the "cannot read disc" error. I ran hot water over it first and it at least played but still froze in spots. I then boiled it and it works perfectly now. I'm not surpised though because I used to do this with some of the earlier xbox games. If you havent' boiled it do it as it really works.

I wouldn't be surprised if it won't play. The glue residue on the other side will cause a weight imbalance on the spinning disk and cause it to wobble and error. I would try to get all of the residue off the SD side.

And people say combos aren't that bad.
With cover art you wouldn't have had a problem.

Ridiculous codec tier sig gone. Still AVC/24bit lossless fanboy.

Studio quality tier

I just got CoM from Amazon and the SD side of the disc has tons of fingerprints on it, a few scratches and the HD side has two sizeable scratches on it... haven't played the movie through yet, but skimmed around and the disc seemed to be fine...watching it tomorrow and hoping for the best....I don't like scratched discs, but if it plays fine, I don't want to chance returning it for one of the problem discs so many others have gotten....

Try some Goo Gone, that usually gets the sticky stuff off. Don't use too much though because I noticed the other day when I was removing one of those horrible square Target type theft stickers, that the Goo Gone actually clouded the finish on the case. Maybe use it sparingly and use one of those micro-fiber towels. They don't seem to ever scratch my discs. It's not perfect, but it works.

Just throw it in the pot with boiling water with the rest and clean carefully and glue should go away

(goober pile voice) You mean that's not supposed to be there? Dayum, maybe that explains why my disc won't play and why my player suddenly stopped working. I thought it was like one of them there things you put on tires to balance em', you know, so I thought they done put it on wrong and I tried puttin' the disc on my tire balancer, I moved it around until it looked like it was balanced, and I tried it again, but still nothin was happening, cepting for this noise I heard inside my player that sounded a bit like a swarm of crickets was in there or somethin.

Me too. I had it happens many, many years ago. I was using my PS2 to watch a movie I just got (was letting someone borrow my stand-alone DVD player) and the thing made all sorts of noise as it was spinning; it wouldn't play.

So I took the disc out and saw that the security tag was stuck to the movie side (non-label side). Fortunately, the label came off cleanly... Needless to say, I check the data side of every disc I buy now before I use it!

Actually, wouldn't it be more likely to cause a problem if it were on the label side? With CDs and DVDs, the label is usually closer to the data than the data side; or is this different for HD-DVDs?

Agreed. I'm still amazed at how long some of the shots lasted without cutting away.
