So, Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead are getting their HD DVD releases in the UK on 8/6.

Any word on extras? And how/if they differ from the US editions?

I know in the UK, the extras for Shaun (on standard DVD) included an additional commentary... wondering if that (and other goodies) will make it to the HD DVD.

Let's just hope someone will make a custom cover

Got my EU-version of Flags of our Fathers by Warner which boosts a Dolby TrueHD-track over the Dreamwoks release Dolby Digital 5.1-Plus track (1.5 Mbps) today.

Only downside is that it's dualsided with the film on one side and the extras on the other...

Yes, I've seen that one in stores here too. the Blu-ray version is single sided and a 50 Gb disc, so I guess they could fit in all the extras on that. The BD version has PCM 5.1 instead of TrueHD.

Before I ordered the Renaissance German HD DVD I had a few questions about it. I PM'd homerx who has kind enough to check his disc and provide the answers. I thought I'd post his reply here in case anyone else had the same questions. Thanks homerx!

The opening text is english as well as the end credits.

During the movie the Avalon billboards are in English but most of the other text is in French (shots of newspapers, etc).

So worth the import as it looks great.

I received my Band of Brothers package from Amazon JP yesterday. Here are the specs for the import list:

Band of Brothers volumes 1-5 (Japanese Version)
English Audio: Yes DTS-HD 5.1 (and Japanese DTS-HD 5.1)
English Menus: No, Japanese only
Subtitles: Optional Japanese (2 types)
Extras: Japanese trailers for some episodes in each disc. Cast/Staff text information in Japanese. Documentary: "We Stand Together: The Men of Easy Company" on disc 5. Documentary has English audio with forced Japanese subs.
Case: Red HD DVD cases, slightly thicker than thin U.S. cases but thinner than DVD cases.

Quick menu translation referring to disc 1:

Main menu level:
=======================
Center left: Play both episodes back to back

Upper row: Play 1st episode ; Play 2nd episode ; Setup ; Cast/Staff

Lower row: Chapters for 1st episode ; Chapters for 2nd episode ; Trailers (for some of the episodes) ; Bookmark (instructions on how to use)
=======================

Setup menu (3rd option (out of 4) in upper row of main menu options):
=======================
Leftmost options: Audio: Original ; Japanese
Center options: Subtitles: Japanese #1 ; Japanese #2 ; None
Rightmost options: Menu control audio: On ; Off
=======================

Apparently scenes can be bookmarked by pressing B on remote control during playback, I didn't try it yet...

In the main content (10 episodes) you can control audio and subtitles from remote during playback as well. Default audio is original, and Japanese subs are ON by default but easy to disable.

Any title displays that appeared in the content were in English as expected.

HD DVD: 387 (new: Taking Lives ; list)
Blu-ray: 262 (new: North Face (UK) ; list)
HD DVD-R: 262 (new: Charlie Wilson's War ; list)

I could not find specific info on this anywhere. Before I plunk down any money I want to know if European HD-DVD's will play on my American Toshiba HD-XA2.

I know in the past when I wanted to play European DVD's (PAL) I had to go out and buy a DVD player that was NTSC/PAL compatible.

Specifically what I like to know is what is the HD-XA2 compatiblity with the European HD-DVD's?

The HD formats (HD DVD and BD) work in the 1080p world, not PAL/NTSC anymore.
With your SD discs you will continue to have to deal with the PAL/NTSC situation on your XA2 (XA2 doesn't read PAL discs. XE1 reads both PAL and NTSC), but with any HD DVD discs you get, the XA2 will play 'em all; no matter where you buy them.

Thank you for your quick reply. My wife and I wanted to order several HD-DVD's from the U.K. & Germany. However she wanted me to check here first to make sure what we ordered would actually play.

Its good to know I can purchase HD-DVD's from anywhere in the world and they would play correctly on my machine.

PAL DVD's aren't a problem because I have another DVD player that is NTSC/PAL compatible.

anixehd.tv accepts payments via bank / wire transfer ONLY.
I think they are the cheapest EU store for HD.

My 2 cents

Extremely expensive but I am not sure why they don't deduct VAT after checkout for international orders.

Is there any difference between the British HD DVD of The FOG (1980) and the French?

Should I wait on buy Mulholand Drive since it's a Universal title and will probably get a state-side release?
