The HD-DVD has better vertical definition (shocks and engine on John's bike).

I don't like the additional EE though.

The semi's grill in the BD version looks blocky from the mpeg-2 compression but looks clean in the HD-DVD version.

Cameron is generally considered a perfectionist, yet he's notorious for shooting scenes that put stunt people on screen very prominently. This motorcycle shot was bad on normal DVD, its *really* bad in HD.

I seem to recall there were a couple of really obvious stunt people shots in True Lies as well (I think especially during the nighttime forest foot chase).

I suppose this is the advantage of getting someone like Harrison Ford on set. He's done some stunt work where you don't even see his face in the final shot.

Yes, the UK release is simply Disc 2 from the French set.

Wow the blu-ray version looks absolutely terrible in the red areas. What the heck is up with that?

You can clearly see the red eyes are all blocky along with some terrible red mess on the young John Conners friends pants and also on the bike.

Judging from those screenshots the HD-DVD version is clearly better. Of course, I seriously doubt any movie encoded with MPEG2 could match VC-1, so there is really no argument.

I was holding off on importing titles, but I think I will have to pick this one up.

So much for "Beyond High Definition." Try "Barely HighDef."

Well, according to Francesco's 1080p>720p>1080p testing method, even the superior HD-DVD version is resolving not much more than 720p resolution. Blah.

so, here are the mouseover images of Xylons "T2" screenshots for nice & easy comparison ... available as

Terminator 2 - Blu-ray (MPEG-2) vs. HD DVD (VC-1)

and
HD DVD (VC-1) vs. WMV-HD (WMV)

Good job, msv.

Looking at the captures I think the softness of the BRD version is more than just typical mpeg-2 vs vc-1. The BRD has a weird vertical stretch to it.

Since when has arbitrarily manipulating a screen capture a few times in Photoshop become an accepted method of determining the actual resolution of a given film?

Because it works.

How else are you going to measure detail without a resolution chart?

Sorry, but you haven't answered my question. Since when has screwing around in Photoshop with a screen capture become an accepted way of determining the actual resolution of a given film? Saying "because it works" doesn't cut it. Who says it works? Who says that manipulating an image in Photoshop and then comparing it to the original is an accurate method of measuring the detail of the original? Some guy comes along and claims that the newly remastered version of The Fifth Element is made from an up-scaled 720p master and everyone just buys it hook, line, and sinker. Hell, the guy who started this B.S. hasn't even seen the new version - he's judging the whole transfer by three or four screen caps.

File me under "highly skeptical, to the point of utter disbelief."

I don't think anyone bought that it came from a 720p master. I think he meant that the detail was in a 720p range, which it is. Why don't you try it yourself?

No, he specifically said (more than once) that he believed that the new version of TFE was created from an up-converted 720p master. I'm saying that's pure B.S.

Mind you, this is all without seeing the movie. He's basing this all on a couple of screencaps and for some reason you've bought into it.

Why would I? It's a flawed "test" that hasn't been proven to be accurate in any way, shape, or form.
