Ok, we've all seen it, there's a thread about it, but there's something noone caught so I thought I'd post about it and see what we can come up with. Either using the "Pause" feature on the Flash player embeded in the page, or downloading the MP4 version of the Promo here in the thread that someone posted and pausing it right at around 1:43.

Check that out: Web-Enabled Features Download Center

Um, now has anyone seen this just yet, have I just missed it or something?

Looking over the incredibly blurry text as it scales towards the screen, what the person watching this is doing is downloading the theatrical trailer for Evan Almighty. It also says it's 120 megs, right under the 130 in flash memory most HD DVD players come with.

Other things on the page include:

TV on DVD
News from Universal
Bourne Indentity on HD DVD
Curt's My Scenes from Knocked Up
Hot Fuzz
The Kingdom
Bourne Ultimatum
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry
Balls of Fury
The "Ultimate" Sweepstakes

This is very interesting in my opinion as it's a lot like Microsoft's Xbox 360 Marketplace. This is what I've been hoping Toshiba would do for a long, long time. I was also hoping you could just turn on your player and get to this section, but I'm guessing only the newest discs will have some sort of gateway to it?

Anyway, anyone else notice this, or as interested as I am about it?

That's a great example of why HD DVD interactivity is so impressive. The potential is enormous. Far greater than the short sighted sour graped Blu Ray fans will ever be willing to admit. It's not just about what is available now, but what is now possible with this HD DVD built in technology.

I also notice the "storage space" down at the bottom corner. Makes you wonder if those USB ports on the front of everyone's HD DVD player are finally going to see some usage!

Yeah, I noticed that too. It could be just a prototype or something, but it had real looking downloads.

I really hope its real. Maybe its built-in on the G3 players. That would be cool if its a XBL-live homepage for HD DVD players. That would really tie the whole experience together.

I have a feeling my 8Mbps connection will come in handy.

Those of you with standalone players may soon be able to connect an external USB hard drive and download to your heart's content.

How do you get this to appear? Is it only on Toshiba players?

Would we be able to access our desktop's hard drive from the player via the Ethernet (or wireless) cable?

So, you will likely need to connect a hard-drive va usb ports in order to store these downloads? You say that most HD DVD players have 130mb of flash storage build in capable of storing a single download? Just trying to figure this out.

Let's hope!

Either way, I've ordered a router and 100ft of ethernet cable, so when I receive my Heroes set next week I'll be ready to jump on line.

Not a single download. Every standalone player currently on the has 128mb flash storage, and you can download as many things as can fit in that space, and web enabled disks also allow you to go into your player's storage and delete individual items to free up space. And without a doubt everything that will be available for download for the forseeable future will be under 128mb. So you won't have to have an external HD to download anything (heck, that function is just a pie in the sky at this point in time), but if there's a lot of new stuff that's coming out that you want to download, you'll be deleting old stuff pretty frequently.

Thanks for the info. I think, however, if I wanted to download (trailers, for instance) I would want to keep him on drive to play for guests. So, I don't think 128mb is adequate -- especially since I have only a 1.2mb line and it would take several minutes per download. I would much rather have access to an external drive via the usb ports or my networked computer, if possible. The downloads sound great though.

capek,

why do you think it [EDIT: network or hdd] is pie in the sky?

just wondering if you know of some technical limitation becasue i am an engineer and as far as i know it would only require writing some software.

Amir mentioned at one point being able to attach a USB hard drive for additional storage, so I think the ability will be there at some point. Or possibly even USB flash drives. You can get a 4GB flash drive for pretty cheap these days.

I thought I read some where that the usb ports were not even connected?

Ill try to find it. In the mean time this is something I had hoped for from the begining.

Blu ray is the best Blah, blah, blah.

Hooking up a 1 gig flash drive to the front USB port isn't a tough thing to do, and that'd cover you for quite a while. I think that's the best way to go, though an external pocket drive could be kind of cool.

even if the usb ports are not connected or otherwise useable for storage purposes for some reason, the ethernet ports obviously work.

personally, since i would like the player to conect to ethernet anyway to access the internet, i would rather store things on a pc then a local hdd. imo the local hdd would be most useful to somebody that doesn't want to use a pc.

Another possibility for downloads could be stuff like more skins, and possibly skins that show up somewhere other than just the "Setup" menu(at least, that's all my skins ever show up in). Themes would be another cool thing, wallpapers, etc. Make it all free too, no need to charge people for stuff like that. Then again, if you look in the top right corner you'll see "User Account" so that may or may not be a clue as to whether or not they would try to charge for anything. There are so many possibilities for this, I really hope that this is not only something that's coming, but something that will work on ALL players(I, myself still only have an HD-A1).

Front USB ports on XA1 are also behind the motorized doors. I would also prefer ability to connect to PC via Ethernet port. If you could also stream movies files from networked PC, that would be extra icing on the cake.

It's a pie in the sky until it is announced as a feature to be added via a firmware update, and further still, until it happens. Just because a feature might be possible doesn't mean that you can expect it to be added at some point in the future. Though I too hope they add all these features in the future. It sure would be nice if my A1 could play HD .ts files from an external HD or from my PC.

capek,

i guess we might just have a difference in understanding of various ideas/words.

"pie in the sky" = A fanciful notion or ludicrous concept.

to me as an engineer it seems almost trivial to get this to work on the player.

the harder part is dealing with the other end. i started asking about accessing xbox [EDIT marketplace] a long time ago on avs but everybody ignored me. imo xbox [EDIT marketplace] was the obvious solution because creating the storefront is a huge undertaking compared to creating the client on the player.

One good thing: if/when that feature arrives, at least we wont have to pay $40 to "activate" it.

I hope we could connect a USB external HDD that would rock! I have a 120 GB external HDD I'm not currently using.

HD movie trailers
Content that wasn't available on the disc
Subtitles for various languages
Secondary audio tracks (TrueHD audio track downloads for movies which don't have it?)
Promotional Sweepstakes
Info about upcoming releases

The online thing could be huge if done properly

The 360 add-on will be able to do all of these things also. Heck, it'll be even better considering it has 20GB of Hard drive space to use.

Or 120GB with the Elite. Honestly, I doubt too many X360 owners w/ the HDDVD drive do not own the Elite due to HDMI (true 1080p only over HDMI) but with the new Premium/Core HDMI systems, moot point.

I personally have an Elite and the HDDVD drive.
