HD DVD Software > Uh oh - cloudy discs (disc rot?) - anyone else ?

Hello,

I was hoping some of you may be able to help me please...

I just reached for my "AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON" HD-DVD Combo disc to watch. When I got the disc out of the case I noticed that the HD-DVD side was all "cloudy". I mean the entire disc had a cloudy appearance WITHIN the disc. I gently wiped the disc centre-to-edge with a soft cloth and it made no difference to the appearance of the disc. I tried to play the disc and it would freeze and stutter. I know that I played this disc fine when I purchased it (Dec 2006) and put it away on my DVD rack afterwards where it has remained til tonight. My room is dry and of a suitable temperature. I am confused and a bit worried about this. What shall I do?

Could this happen to other discs? Have you had other "issues" like this with discs of yours? I also notice that the INSIDE of some of the disc cases are a little "cloudy". Is this normal?

Please let me know if you have seen anything like this yourself. Thanks!

Can you post a few pictures? I'd like to see what it looks like.

Hi, I'd love to but I don't have a digital camera and the means to do it. However, you'll know it when you see it... the disc just looks all "cloudy" and "milky" WITHIN the disc. Very odd, but VERY worrying too.

It's kinda like this (only the HD-discs are more silver than gold):

Anyone?

It was NOT like this when I bought it I know that and it played fine. That was only 8 months ago!

Since it has been several months it is probably too late to contact the store or company you ordered the movie from, so I would recommend that you contact the studio that released it. I don't own this title, but look on the box and see if there is not an e-mail address or phone number for contacting them. With new technologies, they should want reports of any problems such as this. Hopefully, they will ultimately agree to send a replacement, but it may involve more than one e-mail or phone call until you reach someone at a management level. I also hope this is not a sign of things to come. We do not need a repeat of "laser rot."

the only way to tell is if you post up a pic of the disk showing both sides of the disk ,showing what movie it is and which studio

your asking us blindly, how are we supposed to help without the info needed ???

I'm going to take the report with a grain of salt until I see some actual pics. Don't take my comments as an insult, because they are not meant to be. Due to the nature of the forums one has to be particularly careful of what one believes.

I found something like this today on my copy of Happy Feet. Was about to loan it to a friend when I noticed it. It looked like something that would wash off with dishwashing detergent but when I dried it, the area was still there. Although much small than than the one shown in the photo. It looks like the milky area is 'within' the disc rather than on the surface.

My wife played the disc just a couple of days ago and reported no problems so we'll see.

I have had the movie for a few months and I can't say whether it has always been there.

My HD DVD of Training Day had developed a cloudy pattern, but it always worked just fine. Curious about the situation, a couple of months ago I tried to remove it using a wet lint-free cloth. Sure enough, the cloud went away after scrubbing rather hard. No scratches developed from the process. I'm sure it was never a big deal. This was the only disc in my now 100+ HD DVD collection to have this "problem"; my combos have always been fine.

The standard warranty on media is 90 days, so I don't think the manufacturer has an obligation to help. That being said, a call to their customer service line wouldn't hurt.
HiramAbiff's Avatar HiramAbiff 05:22 PM 08-30-2007
Call the studio's customer service people. Or better yet, fax them.

My Miami Vice HD-DVD combo disc was just like that out of the box. Now it's a coaster cause they wouldn't take it back at BB since they didn't have a functional HD-DVD player set up to test it on.

O.K. I will try and take a pic with a friends didgital camera BUT I assure you all that this is NOT a hoax. I have fully embraced BOTH HD formats and want to see HD takeoff and get cheaper so everyone wins...

This is kind of what my "AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON HD-DVD" looks like...

Not good!

Please let me know if you have seen anything like this yourself. Thanks!

What does this have to do with anything in this thread?

Did you say the same thing with the BD "The Prestige" and its run of bad discs? Likely not.

It is "AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON".

It is a "COMBO DISC with HD-DVD on one side (the cloudy side) and DVD on the other (slightly cloudy in parts).

It is made by Universal.

I purchased in December 2006 from DVDPacific and it played fine (and looked fine) on arrival. I haven't played it since til last night. Now unplayable and very VERY cloudy.

The above picture is VERY close to what I;m seeing on my disc only the HD-DVD is more silver coloured than the above discs which are more gold.

Anyone seen anything like this on their HD-DVD's?

Until you show the actual disc no one will really be able to give any good opinions on your problem. Showing pictures of other discs that may or may not look like your problem isn't exactly helpful is it?

As stated SEVERAL times above.

This IS very VERY close to what I am seeing. The ONLY difference is the colour of the disc itself. Some DVD's are gold (like the one below) where as HD-DVD's are more silver. Other than that there is NO difference. This IS what I am seeing when I look at my "AMERICAN WEREWOLF" disc.

By any chance, do those of you seeing this live in a non-air conditioned, high humidity enviornment?

Well if we go off of what HD DVD fans said when a Blu disc turned up like this it is the Apocalypse. Blu Ray has now won and the whole war is over. LMAO. Or I think that was the jist of what was said when every blu ray disc made rotted. Anyone see the sales numbers... wow.

In a combo disc, the two sides do NOT look the same.
The HD DVD side is more reflexive while the DVD side is more opaque.
Could it be that the OP believed both sides would look the same?

I really think the OP should give us some pictures of the disc (both sides) so we can really take a good look at it. If there's a problem with the disc, we would love to see it.

Thanks.

I agree. It does look like condensation but it is INSIDE the disc and does NOT wipe off or evaporate.

I live in the UK and yes, houses in the UK do NOT have air conditioning. The Summer has been quite wet (very wet infact) but not particularly humid (I should know as I HATE humidity). The disc has been very carefully looked after and has been inside it's case since I watched it in December (when it looked and played fine).

Do you think this could be a factor then? High humidity, no air con, plastic cases that "enhance" condensation? Any thoughts?

Errr no. I know what a HD-DVD side looks like and a DVD side... and... the above pics are not it. If I can take a pic I will.

How about you post a real picture of your disc, not an example plucked off the net?

This is how rumors start...

Let him take the picture with his friends camera first.
I am not so quick to dismiss what concerned people say as others. This could be a rare but real problem.
I wonder if it is related to disc rot?

Blu-ray discs didn't turn up like this. They had spots (many of them) that look like actual disc rot. What we have here is something that looks like moisture got between the disc layers somehow.

Put it in a ziploc bag with some silica gel packets... see if the fog starts to disappear...
