This is just a review of disc one.... I am about to view disc two but wanted to give a quick opinion of the AQ & PQ for this title.

The PQ on this title is just outstanding. It is razor sharp in just about every scene and has tremendous picture depth. The close ups in this film are equally amazing. Even the dark scenes are downright striking...there is one scene by the firelight before the battle of Gaugamela that looks just as sharp and striking as most of the bright daylight scenes. The battle scenes look so friggin good....tons of fast action and the VC-1 encode never falters. I dare ya to call this baby soft. Amazing job Warner...very well done!!! I can't wait to see the rest of the film on disc 2.

As good as the PQ is the DD+ holds its own but this movie begged for a TrueHD track. I will have to say though that this DD+ track does sound damn good. Great even...but it just left me wondering what a lossy track could have done.

Update here. The 2nd disc will not play on my A2. I was running firmware 2.2 and it was a no go...kept getting "System error occurred" message I just updated to 2.5 and it is still doing the same thing. This really ____es me off!!!

2ND UPDATE!! Okay...went into settings and changed the Twin format selection to DVD and Voila!! It works like a charm now!!

Yes, the new cut of the movie is 3hrs 33 minutes. It has a designed intermission which is explained by the director Oliver Stone. The Blu-ray version is split onto 2 discs as well and it has a regular DD track while this one at least contains a DD+ track.

The DD track on the Blu-ray and the DD+ track on the HD DVD are identicable. Exact same (640kbps) bitrate and all.

WOW I didn't not know this up until now and I have the movie coming to me from amazon. One of the things I hated all the way back to VHS tapes is having to switch out the movies right in the middle because the movie was to long!! This might seem like a little thing to some people but this really bothers me. I'm not gonna return it or anything cause I actually really like this movie but damn! Imagine having a bunch of people over in your nice home "theater" like room with the lights off and the volume high then all of a sudden "please insert disk two" pops up!!! I hate that! lol

I'll Netflix this if possible. I want to like Alexander, but the movies just misses the mark somehow. Hopefully the new cut is an improvement.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Yeah but it has an actual real intermission screen with music and such...will give your guests time for the restrooms.

Oliver Stone says he did it to allow the viewer time to reflect and soak in what you just saw. Gives it more of an old epic Hollywood film vibe. Did I mention this is a beautiful looking title?

I miss the days of a good intermission. Especially on epic movies of movies above 2 hours. I really wish they would bring them back. Some people may not like to switch discs but it really doesn't matter to me. Especially if they put and Actual intermission there.

Good to know, I'll keep that in mind if I have the same problem, that is if and when Warner ships mine out. Looking forward to what you think of the whole film

My impression is pretty bad since I can't buy the movie.

I went to Fry's and Best Buy and Circuit City, and NO ONE had it.

They had the new Elvis HD DVD films, and they had Deliverance which I bought, but no Alexander and no Troy Director's Cut.

I'm wondering...... WHY?????????????????????????????

It's a shame Warner couldn't do better than 640Kbps DD+ for a film this recent. Sorry, but there's no way that can closely approach lossless -- they should have at least done 1.5Mbps DD+ !

Agreed but the DD+ track does sound great. Im still miffed that I have to switch back and forth between the twin format selection to get one or the other discs to play.

I just started the movie ( edit disc two) and it starts off in India, and has a 10 minute aside on Alexander learning about Meditation on the ganges, his first encounter with monkeys and a premieval indian tribe and it spends time showing how he learns how monkeys have the same bone structure on their hands and feet as humans. this movie really goes in depth into Alexanders world, and is a much better movie, engulfing into Alexander's world. Many of the scenes in this the final cut were not even existant in the directors cut, The scenes are longer and truly help the story line and depth of the movie. The first battle scene with the Persian King, reminds me of 300, shows intricate battle instances, gore and violence that will make you hd dvd player shine to its best. Exquisite detail especallially in daylight and battle scenes.

the picture quality is outstanding very sharp resolute, not as good as KOng but Tier 1 absolutely. Very sharp level of detail. Sound is just ok, nothing spectacular.

I think this is the second movie to come on two discs.

Reds was the first one, and it also had an intermission in the theaters. On this forum people demand OAR for the original presentation of the film, and rightfully so. If the film has an intermission it should be included in the home video release to keep the original presentation in check.

They could of fit it on one HD DVD, it's only 15 minutes longer than Troy: DC and Troy DC has TrueHD which uses much more memory than DD+ 640 so it probably would of equaled out. Anyway for very long movies I'd rather take two discs with a great encode than one disc with a mediocre encode.

Then that would be a first.

Warner has encoded all DD+ and DD tracks at 640kbps bitrate to date.

Yes! There is more gore, more nudity and alot more story plus its been completely rearranged chronologically. The battle of Gaugamela now takes place near the beginning and the timeline is slightly off...going to and from present and past. Angelinas role seems larger which is a plus for me.

I didn't like the theatrical version at all, so I wouldn't recommend a "bling" buy.

Maybe it's because I have long hair and I really didn't like how his hair got longer as he got gay-er. But seriously, I thought it dragged like "New World". I'm a big fan of Alexander the Military Man and what he accomplished, but I didn't like this movie and would definitely recommend renting first. Maybe the Director's/Final/Ultimate/Über cuts make it a better movie, but I disliked the theatrical enough to not even want to bother.
