I can do a test run of the program with those modifications. Let's see what kind of scores we get. I will post them here in about 1 hour.

You are truly the man Francesco, Running a thread like this must be mind boggling time consuming.

This thread is awesome, and the beauty of it, the absolute beauty of it, is the longer it stays active, the more votes it gets, the better it gets.

I don't think ANYONE could complain if every title had 100 votes, and eventually that will be the case.

For ranked films, increase the number of votes required from 5 to 10.

And then when you calculate the ranking number for each title, you can dismiss the top 10% and the bottom 10% of the votes, taking out the extremes.

That way you get rid of the very few HD DVD rabid fan boys that just automatically vote 5 stars, and you disregard the very few Blu Ray rabid fan boys that vote 1.

Could a calculation like that be possible???

Ok, I've made a couple of tests. In the first test I cutted 10% from 5 stars and 1 star votes. Almost no effects on the rankings.

Then I've made a second test, cutting the 20% from 5 stars and 1 stars. Something finally changed in the scores, but not much in the relative positionings: the Matrix movies are still below Bourne. I believe that the cuts at both the top and the bottom pratically cancel each others out. So, it's useless.

Here are the results of the second test run (20% filtered):

Weighted Vote, Average Vote, Movie Title, Number of Votes
4.767836, 4.88189, Shrek The Third, 31

Well, there goes the theory about the Blu Ray fan boys screwing with HD DVD exclusive releases.

I hope that shuts up some people about the integrity of this tier thread.

A person may still disagree with some of the rankings, but at least they can be assured that the rankings are done by actual HD DVD owners who watched the movie!!!!!

I don't think that here on AVS anybody speaks polish. Let's wait for an HD DVD version with english subtitles then.

Thank you for the links. However, while the AVC encode is just a tad sharper and cleaner, this is the HD DVD tier thread. So disregarding the Blu Ray version, I still think this is one of the best looking HD DVDs.

Francesco, your post number 95 is extremely helpful! Thanks for putting that together.

Some interesting results. I am very pleased to see that Pitch Black is getting the high ratings that it deserves! I am suprised that Matrix Reloaded isn't rated higher, I thought it looked great.

This will be very difficult to do. All the polls need be deleted, and recreated again, losing all votes. People should vote all over again. Not exactly a cakewalk...

Anyway, choosing between 5 different quality levels is enough for assessing the quality of the movie. More detailed estimations are too subjective to matter.

here we go,i enjoy surfing this site and its really informative, but it really should only be a guideline or maybe spark your interest in watching a particular hddvd,i mean who sez one is really that much better than the other(yes there are some that are really poor compared to some of the new releases)but again alot of variables, like equipment(display and player/cables,room environment etc)for me the bottom line is this format and the fellow competition is so much better than what we have been looking at,that you really get jaded.witch is frustrating but fun at the same time, now all we can hope for is that they start releasing some films that you really wanna watch and collect!.but dont forget it was the same situation when dvd came to be, nothing really great in the begining, always frustrating for early adopters!.by the way just watched Cream live at royal albert hall hddvd,(panny 750 58 plasma/integra 9.8 processing/ toshiba xa2)....WOW maybe the best picture so far,i no its live and it was shot in hd,reference pq,also its the first time my integra processor(9.8)displayed DTSHD-MASTER AUDIO and it seemed to me the audio was without a doubt better than normal.very clean and open, can anyone tell me if they have had any luck finding other dvds w/DTS-HD MASTER on them (provided you have the right player and processing)...thanks RR

Wow, I just voted on my first movie (We Are Marshall) and it boggles my mind that two people gave it a rating of 1. I gave it a 4 and figured it belonged more around a 3.75, but coudl anyone who gave it a 1 give their rationale? I just want to be sure there I'm not missing some glaring issue with the transfer or something.

No, you're not missing anything. Those are likely from disgruntled Blu-ray fanboys trying to muck up the votes.

Weekly update:

- rankings updated with the latest poll results
- added the following new tags from the great mhafner thread:

Terms and Descriptions:

(EE) Refers to Edge Enhancement. A digital image processing filter used by some studios to improves the apparent sharpness of the video. The creation of bright and dark highlights on either side of any line leaves the line looking more contrasted from a distance. It actually makes the picture less detailed because fine details are covered by the resulting "halo" artifacts.

(DNR) Refers to Digital Noise Reduction. A process which uses a digital filtering algorithm on the digital image data to reduce the amount of random noise (like film grain, electronic noise of the teleciné, comb filter artifacts in composite video sources, film speckles, dirt, scratches etc.) but can result in an actual loss of resolution and fine details, the exact elements of a image that define realism.

(VDF) Refers to Vertical Domain Filtering. A frequent process applied to old 1080i masters to improve their appearance on 1080i display. The vertical pixels are essentially doubled because of the filtering. When deinterlaced to 1080p for HD DVD it looks like the scan was made at 960x1080 rather than the full 1920x1080. That creates the appearance of aliased edges.

(Banding) Colour banding is a problem of inaccurate colour presentation that causes abrupt changes between shades of the same colour. For instance in displaying natural gradients (like sunsets, dawns or clear blue skies).

Why would Full Metal Jacket Duluxe edition be so much higher rated (4.03) than the regular addition (2.44)? Is it all just AQ or PQ also?

Because as you can see from the VDF tag, the first edition of Full Metal Jacket is plagued by Vertical Domain Filtering. A PQ problem. The new deluxe edition was remastered.

More often than not the SD versions of the better HD disks look pretty good too, perhaps because most of them are recent and shot with HD in mind.

Is there any consensus as to which HD releases represent the Greatest Improvement over their SD counterparts? Just curious.

King Kong, hands down. No contest. The dvd looks like a joke.

After that... Serenity. The dvd is so blurry and the HD version is so crisp.

Guess what HD-DVD that shows the least improvement over it's dvd counterpart.
