2001: Because it is a landmark in film and the best we will ever see it.
Batman Begins: Excellent disc
Harry Potter: Excellent discs for the whole family. I can't believe I'm the only one who voted for them.
Serenity: Excellent disc, story and characters
The Matrix: It's The Matrix

It was a tough choice to leave off Planet Earth because it is a must have.
Also agree with Children of Men but it's not everyone's cup of tea.
Band of Brothers is definite must have for me.

I would add Children of Men, King Kong, Corpse Bride and Hot Fuzz to that list. Ant Bully looks fantastic and is one of the best visually, but the movie itself isn't that great so I wouldn't call it a must own.

PETER JACKSON: The theatrical versions are the definitive versions.

King Kong
Transformers
Hot Fuzz
Batman Begins
Matrix Trilogy

I would also say Superman Returns...The PQ is nothing special, but the AUDIO!!!

Hulk did absolutely nothing for me from A PQ, SQ or movie standpoint. Sold my copy the day after I watched it (turned it off with about 10 minutes left as I was completely uninterested).

JVC 3D: Been there, done that, bought a DLP

My choices off your list were:
Planet Earth
Matrix
Transformers

Not on your list - 2 of the following, can't decide:
Children of Men
Seabiscuit
Mission Impossible 3 (wows everyone I show it to)

edit - yeah, I'd have Serenity on there too lol

People who are picking King Kong need their eyes checked and to take their anti-hype meds. Go to the scene where Denholm is standing before the crimson curtain at the theater before the reveal of Kong. See all that nice macroblocking in the reds? That's why King Kong shouldn't be on this list, along with it being boring as hell. You're welcome.

Same for Transformers. Look at the chrome on Sam's dad's car when he's in front of the school. All those jaggies shouldn't be present in a regular DVD, much less HD DVD. The hit-or-miss audio problems that have been debated here are another strike against it. At least it's entertaining, unlike Kong.

DirkBelig, though all the titles listed have high tier PQ this is not a Top 5 PQ list and is therefore another topic. This is a Top 5 Must-Have HD DVDs list.

I picked four on the list, plus "Grand Prix".

I checked "Other(s)" as my only choice for the poll. One would need to know the movie-watching nature of your subject first to have any clue at what would be a must have for them. There are quite a few visual extravaganza's in the action genre that could make must have lists. But if one does not like action movies, would have none on their list. People with children or grand children may feel the need to maintain children-safe movies, where as those with college students may need more horror.

There are truly no must have haves.

Purely from an image quality perspective, I'd say the top five are:

1. King Kong
2. Hot Fuzz
3. Silent Hill (German import)
4. Black Snake Moan
5. Aeon Flux

Of course, if you're also taking the quality of the films themselves into account, then it becomes a bit muddier.
