Remember to scroll your browser to see all the pictures in the post.

There will be three sources for the pictures DVD, UHD and HD DVD. The UHD - Universal HD version came from D* at 1280x1080 12.60 Mbps I capped long time ago. I also have the 1920x1080 from E* unfortunately I can't find it from my pile of hard drives

This is the first time I notice that when activating IME the movie shrinks? Why and what for? I prefer my IME where the movie occupies the whole of my screen! Every frakkking inch!

Another negative for this set. IMHO.

Regardless of whatever pics you post, I was reeeeally disappointed after watching the first disk. I'm so glad I rented this set instead of buying it. I guess I was just hoping this show would look better than how it was actually shot.

Hope I didn't steal one of your reserved posts though. :P

Can you post some shots from the actual first season (not the mini series) when they switched to HD cameras? I notice a huge difference on my setup.

The HD DVD version is sharp and clean. Did the HD DVD version receive any new color timing ?

Whoever wrote the review that said these look barely better than dvd's is blind. The differences are quite clear from the shots.

Not the best looking discs but they are certainly hd.

yea the difference is quite clear, ive never watched this on dvd or hd broadcast. my first viewing of the hd discs i thought it was terrible quality but now i see the huge difference and improvement they made. i guess the source is just so crappy to begin with.

That really is underwhelming. Unless I see a marked improvement from some captures in HD camera episodes... I'll be renting this.

You sir are correct. DVD doesn't have the extra detail that UHD and HD DVD has.

Later on I will concentrate more on the UHD vs HD DVD. The DVD version is one vaseline infested gooey mess. No amount of upscaling is going to fool anyone and claim that its better than the HD version.

I wil take a look at 33 and the rest of the series.

Well, you've convinced me to buy this set. It doesn't look great, but it looks a hell of a lot better than the dvds.

There is a clear difference between the UHD and HD DVD screen captures.

I was just going to say... although the grain in more prominent as stated, there is definitely more detail in the HD-DVD shots than the OTA screenshots.

Yeah, there's a noticeable improvement as the season progresses. I think the 'worst' scenes in the later episodes are the shots in the hangar bay where they're too bright or 'over-contrasted' (or whatever). The space shots are always great and some of the outdoor shots look downright fantastic. This was on my A20.

Sorry - I must really be missing something. Those HD DVD shots look fantastic. Hmmm. Well, my copy should arrive any day now.

And yes, Boomer is hot.

Cheers,

Maybe I'm being too harsh because I have a pre-concieved idea what the PQ will (hope?) look like. I hope you are right.

I didnt buy this because the reviews were bad.
But that looks like Battlestar in HD. I cant believe I considered getting the DVD set.
I will pick this up tomorrow. I cant believe how much grain you lose with broadcast.

HD-DVD really is the way it's supposed to look.
Thanks Xylon.

Ridiculous codec tier sig gone. Still AVC/24bit lossless fanboy.

Studio quality tier
Most Major studios>Small Studios>dogs>cats>Warner(the guys that do new movies)

If you listened to the podcasts, you'll know that the hyper-contrasty look in some scenes (to the point where whites and blacks were blown out) was intentional.

In any case, those pix demonstrate a HUGE improvement over the DVDs. Good to see. It seems like there is a noticeable improvement over the broadcast HD as well, which is a bonus.

Was this series mastered in low bitrate mpeg-2? That's not just grain, those are some nasty compression artifacts, like the worst HD-lite broadcast quality.

At least it's better than the dvd and the crappy UHD broadcast but that's not saying a whole lot.
