Cool! I'm still thinking it's a price mistake, but since quite a few have sold at this price, the seller may not want to risk negative feedback and actually ship the item

I have the SD version of Planet Earth and only using a 480 native res PJ. How much of a difference will the HD-DVD version be picture wise? PJ will do 720p and 1080i....

Huge difference. "PE" took five years to film and the material was shot in a combination of 720p and 1080i equipment (whatever was available in 2001-2006) so whatever was shot will play at its native rez on your PJ. I tried watching a few seconds of SD "PE" on TV while it was playing on HD-DVD and I turned into that Nazi dude that melts at the end of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (it hurt so much! ).

it may also be the 1080i sigourney weaver version not the bbc 1080p. i got the blu-ray version from discovery online last month and it was the weaver/1080i version. not happy about that.

you guys may want to check into that while (if) you still can.

You could be right, the description says:

"Award-winning actress and conservationist Sigourney Weaver narrates this 11-part series."

What is the difference from the BBC one?

Same footage but has Weaver's narration instead of Attenborough. The opening promo is different too. (I have both versions in HD). Some reviews have said the bbc has slightly improved video but I did some comparisons and couldn't detect any significant differences. I suppose if you spent all day trying to look for it, it MIGHT be there...but both versions look pretty good.

One thing is the BBC version seems to be recorded louder.

I also had heard that the Discovery Store version does not have all the content of the BBC release.

yep. that's the 1080i one. the packaging on my bluray version is different than the standard. but the big differences are the resolution (i vs p) and the narrator.

i regret my purchase to be honest. if i had figured it out quickly enough i would have canceled the order.

On the same projector, probably just better color and a marginal amount of extra detail. Your projector is not HD (native res of 480); even though it can take a 720p or 1080i signal, it cannot display them until after it has converted it to 480p. You'll need a 720p or preferably a 1080p projector.

I think the Discovery version also has some stuff cut out of it. BBC version is the one to get, IMO.

You have pretty bad taste if you thought Zodiac is boring. It's not an action movie, but I found it very intriguing.

I like Zodiac as well but I don't think you can judge someone to have bad taste just because they don't like the same movie you do.

Oh well $33 shipped, not the favorite version but good enough for me, besides my Hd-DVD player is not 1080P.

And to think I almost paid $65 plus tax around Christmas.
Thanks Rooski.

Thanks Rooski.

1080i from a HD player would be deinterlaced into 1080p on a 1080p television. No difference, since what's on the disc is 1080p. If the disc is 1080i, well, that's a different story

That is strange. How long ago was this?

The odd thing is, discoverystore.com sells it for $79.95 while the discovery ebay store is selling it for $29.99. Hmmm......with any luck, maybe they're offloading some BBC versions.

I wasn't aware of the two different versions until after I purchased, but from what I've read, I'll be happy with the US version. My D3 outputs up to 1080i, but I use 720p since it looks better on my Sammy 42" DLP, which is native 720.

There is some missing footage, but probably nothing critical, and listening to Sigourney for 8 hrs is fine by me

Not to worry. I waited a while after making my purchase and responded to the Discovery Channel email. Checked-out via their store and even got $3.25 shipping instead of $7.95 on the ebay page.

I don't know what others are saying about "the version" being inadequate. It's the 4-disc HD DVD so I'm sure it's the real deal.

Nobody is saying it's "inadequate." They are merely pointing out that there are two different versions of this series out there. One is the original cut done by the BBC with David Attenborough narrating. Each of these episodes runs about 53-55 minutes. There is also the Discovery Channel version (which is what the Discovery Channel eBay store is presumably selling), which is narrated by Sigourney Weaver and runs about 42-44 minutes per episode (to make room for commercials). All that people are saying is that many here prefer that extra 10 minutes or so of footage (and David Attenborough's voice for some of us). Both versions are totally legitimate and "the real deal." It's just a matter of personal preference. That said, 30 bucks is a bargain, and it doesn't really matter which version you end up with.

Well, this is rather interesting. There's a BOGO starting today in stores. Here are the few BOGO titles that have a different online price...

Format: Movie (store price, online price)

Bourne Ultimatum ($29.99, $26.99)
Shooter ($29.99, $24.99)
Transformers ($29.99, $19.99)
Disturbia ($29.99, $19.99)
Hot Fuzz ($29.99, $19.99)
King Kong ($24.99, $19.99)

Now the question is whether BB will price match their online prices and still give the BOGO? Possible??

That's probably true, but they should also probaby refrain from passing judgements like "one of the movie boring movies I've ever seen" on to others. I too thought it was excellent. I rented in on Netflix and wished it has been on HD.

They still get you.

I put in "Shooter" & "King Kong", which are on BOGO sale and when I put in "Shooter" in my cart, it lists it as "Free HD" if I buy another from a list - which does not have "King Kong" on it.

The list:

Breach
Inside Man
I now pronounce you chuck & larry
Bourne Ultimatum
Van Helsing
Casino
40 year old virgin
Shrek the 3rd
Fear & Loathing in LV

I'll just pick them up locally, two for $30, not bad.
