Denon has just released these docking stations: ASD-51N and ASD-51W with, guess what, digital out.

I am very much inclined to buy one but cant get any info if it is a true "digital out" or not (I guess it should be, but unlike Wadia, they dont advertise this).

According to someone inside Denon, the new docks do in fact receive a digital output from the iPod and pass it along to the receiver for D/A conversion.

That would be cool if the Denon docks output a digital stream as the Wadia and the new Onkyo ND-S1 will. But I would think Denon would have put that information on the product page. Here is the announcement of the ND-S1 from Onkyo and they stress the fact that you can get a digital output before being processed by the i-pods DACs.

An alternative if you store your songs on an portable is the Airport Express, just hook it up you the DAC. Bit-perfect.

When you say portable do you mean an iPod? I ask as I just looked at the Airport Express and it only shows steaming audio from your PC. Maybe I am missing somthing but what would you use for a remote? I plan on getting the iPod classic as I do not have any need for the iTouch.

That is why something like the Wadia 170i or the new Onkyo ND-S1 is interesting to me. It allows the signal from the iPod to be untouched to your DAC or AVR/prepro with a supplied remote.

I meant portable computer. Then you don't even need a remote because you are using your computer (and you rip your songs onto your computer).

The ASD-51 indeed outputs digital information. Although I have to say I find my AppleTV more convenient for browsing songs and is now cheaper than the ASD-51.

Looking on the Denon site there is no mention that the ASD-51 can bypass the iPods DACs with its digital output. I would think if it did Denon would list it in the ASD-51s product page as Wadia and Onkyo do. That is why I am looking at the Onkyo ND-S1 as it enables you to bypass the DACs in the iPod. I am looking to put all my CDs on a iPod and have CD quality playback which I would not have using a standard iPod dock.

Hey Bill,
Do you know when the Onkyo will be available, and how much will it cost?

I heard this fall as well. As far as price I have not seen any mention of a price in US dollars. Here is a review of the ND-S1 which mentions the cost in either UK (pound?) or the Euro. I'm not too well versed in foreign currency.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/mp3/re...a-Transport/p1

I have a e-mail into Denon support about their ASD-51 iPod dock and whether the digital output actually bypasses the iPod's DACs. I tend to think it does not but you never know.

Thanks Bill,
The review says 125 pounds, so that is $184.00 in the USA. Not bad

Was there any conclusion as to if the Denon bypasses the iPod's DAC?

The Wadia one looks really slick but seems to lack the on-screen contronl and IP features of the Denon. Further it doesn't mention that it supports the iPhone. Strange!

I like the Onkyo one, but it doesn't support the iPhone as well.

I guess there must be something in the iPhone that prevents external hardware from bypassing the internal DAC.

I've got a huge library of FLACs, so I'm think this Denon things is the way to go. I'm open to using my idle HTPC or even an Apple TV. Thoughts?

Wadia iTransport does support iPhone. I've read it, and I've tried it. No problems.

iPhone: Supports component video out and enables digital audio out while still allowing the iPod click wheel interface to function normally. However, when an iPhone is docked in the iTransport, it will state that the accessory is not designed for the iPhone and will query whether or not the user wants to switch into "airplane mode" (essentially switching off the cell phone). Since the iTransport does work with the iPhone in either mode, either answer is appropriate.

Does anyone know if there are any plans to ever be able to output the iPods menu to the TV through the docks video out connections?

Apple TV is much better since you can use HDMi and bypass internal DAC and on top of this you have access to HD Movies previews and on screen display

No thanks: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...article754481/

My question pertained to the Wadia iTransport as I thought this was a Wadia iTransport thread.

My question was pertaining to the Wadia because that is what I own. I don't want the Apple TV or any other media server at this time. I was just trying to determine if there were plans to be able to view the iPods menu on a TV at some point in the future through the Wadia.

Got the iTransport and a Cambridge DacMagic - works like a charm. Enough has been said about it, but I will say that it has done wonders for me - I love the soundstage, depth and the overall sound quality. The annoying bit is awful remote and not being able to navigate via an on-screen TV display.

That said, I am wondering if I would have been better off just getting a Mac mini and the outboard DAC? With a bluetooth keyboard/mouse and the TV for a screen, could have had other functionality - but don't know enough about sound quality. Any thoughts?
