By a stroke of luck I can input into the Oppo v. Mega $ player debate.

We went down to the local Salvation Army store tonight, and behold, an Oppo 970HD for $20. Sold! No remote, which sucks, so I'll have to see if I can find a universal and code that works. Looks like the last beta firmware update allows some other remote codes, so maybe there is hope.

Got it home and hooked it up to my 2.1 system. My other source is a Music Hall Maverick SACD player, which retails in the $1000-$1500 range.

Compared the Beatles - Love in DVD-A (Oppo) and redbook (Maverick)
Compared Mannheim Steamroller Fresh Aire II in HDCD (Oppo) and redbook (Maverick)
Compared Dark Side OTM in SACD in both

DVD-Audio: No contest, the Maverick in upsampling mode kills the Oppo.
HDCD: Kudos to the Oppo here, it sounds very good and compares well with the Maverick.
SACD: No contest, because the Oppo locks up on my two SACDs and won't play them. Hopefully a firmware update tomorrow will fix that too.

Still, I am really excited at my $20 Oppo find. It will make a great source at work for my headphone rig...especially if I can get a remote to work with it.

Of course, we were not talking about the older 970 but the newer 980/983. And, yes, they are not the perfect players for audio but they are excellent for the money (and less than your Maverick) and generally outstanding when used as digital transports.

Happy to say the firmware update got the SACDs playing, and also got my universal remote working as well. However, I did lose the picture (the firmware update instructions said the HDMI output may have to be reset - via the remote, which I don't have of course).

Not too worried about that though, as I am going to use it as an audio player.

So, I did get to do the SACD test. Still no comparison, the Maverick sounds miles better. I also tried out a Sony SACD changed that I have in the garage, the Oppo does sound much better than the Sony.

I sure understand the Oppo excitement. It is a nice sounding player that plays everything. I am very excited to have found one for my desk headphone rig.

Did the 980/983 get a significant audio upgrade over the 970?

Yes. I am not saying they are superior to the Maverick because I have never heard one.

I think CD player is outdated, it is an antique. In 21st century, the CD player must be subsititued by car DVD player with builtin GPS navigation position system, even including computer function.

Still uneasy about spending that kind of $$$, but does anyone have an opinion on the Vincent Audio - CD-S1.1 Hybrid CD Player? It is now < $1,000 at AA for the bargain price of $999.95.

It's also HDCD-compatible.
