When my 470's DSD is ON, no sound comes out of my Marantz AV7005 Pre-Pro, which I now realize does NOT decode DSD (or HDCD). So what audio resolution is being sent via HDMI when SACD is played on 470?

When you set the 470 for DSD=off, the player send very high resolution 24 bit 176khz . You will be hard pressed to hear any falloff from pure DSD. In fact, many pro guys say that 24/176 bit rates and overall resolution is basically equivalent to DSD64.

Are there any transports that will decode HDCD into a "native" bitstream that the Marantz AV7005 will playback properly? I'm basically looking for something that will send SACD/DVD-Audio/HDCD via HDMI as PCM.

I just discovered rippers for DVD-Audio (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/DVD-Audio_Explorer) and HDCD (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/cd-ripper.htm) so really only need SACD/Blu Ray combo. Looks like one of the Sony units might be the ticket when they go back on sale again.

I use DVD Audio Extractor. http://www.castudio.org/dvdaudioextractor/ To me it was well worth the $32. I use it to rip my DVD-As to .WAV files to feed my USB DAC. It also does a superb job of down mixing 6ch to 2ch if there are no 2ch hirez tracks. (providing, of course, you want 2ch.) Support is great and a new version just came out.

Oppo 93, but it is a player, not a transport.

Hi I am getting a DAC which is capable of inputting DSD on SDIF3 connectors, which is Mytek Digital Stereo DSD 192 DAC.
Oppo outputs 5.1 DSD via HDMI.
My question is : Is there any converter to convert HDMI DSD audio to SDIF3 ?
I searched google but could not find one.

I have a Denon AVR A100, which is DL4 capable. Currently I spin my shiny discs on an OppoBDP83SE connected via HDMI. I must say the system sounds great for SACD (DSD sent to A100 for decoding), BR (bitstreamed) and DVDA. Most redbook CDs reveal a big step down for SQ, though exceptionaly well-recorded ones are listenable. I'm not interested in analog connections, bench-tests or jitter theory. I'd just like to hear from those with real-world experience irt:

I'd love to hear from anyone who has done an A/B test of DL3 vs HDMI for SACD, DVDA and RBCD.

Same for anyone who has done the A/B test of DL4 ON vs OFF for BR.

Thnx, please respond here.

Yes, I still like playing with Dalis.

Pioneer has finally gotten into the DSD over HDMI business. This is especially good news for people interested in taking advantage of PQLS over HDMI with their SACDs. (Previously, the only Pioneer players that could apply PQLS to multichannel SACDs required an iLink connection.)

It's been a while since I updated the thread. Any other new players out there?

I've added a few new Cambridge Audio universal players, as well as the latest round of Sony Blu-ray players. I've also updated the list of discontinued players. There must be stuff I'm missing, though. Anyone?

I have the Pioneer Elite BDP-52FD, the American version of the BDP-440. For some reason, I can't seem to get it to output DSD as 176.4 KHz PCM. I only get 88.2 KHz PCM no matter what I do. I tried different settings and situations, but can't seem to get 176.4 KHz output!

What prepro or receiver are you using it with?

I can't recall where I read that the Pioneer could output 176.4 kHz PCM over HDMI. I'm traveling now, but when I get back I'll look into it.

Pioneer EU press

We've been discussing this in the Pioneer BDP thread, have a look if you like.

Audiosceptics accept audio trials using 25 people. A recent Oxford study with over 353,000 patient records from 639 separate clinical trials shows for every 1,000 people taking diclofenac or ibuprofen there would be 3 additional heart attacks, 4 more cases of heart failure and 1 death every year.

Considering that most SACDs are out of print and unlikely will be re-released, we need to add another attribute to classify SACD players - capability to play SACD image on DVD-R media or USB drive.

Is there a way to rip SACD's now? How do you create the DVD-R image, or store it on a USB drive?

There is a known process using old ("fat") Sony PS3.

Just read up on it a bit. It appears the images can not be mounted on a computer, and can only be played back on some SACD players. So other than piracy, what's the point of going to all the trouble to rip them in the first place?

Being able to store them on a music server for playback would be great though. Of course then you no longer need an SACD player at all. Just like a CD player is really no longer needed.

SACD ISO image can be played on computer via Foobar2000. You can also export individual tracks as DSD files or convert them to high resolution FLAC.

It also gives you access to copies of out of print SACDs, unavailable to purchase from official channels.

Can you confirm this? One of the Pioneer websites claimed that they would output 176.4 kHz PCM. Is there some official statement otherwise? If so, I'd appreciate it if you can direct me to it!

Well, that certainly settles that! I'll make the necessary adjustments to the initial post.

As far as the Pioneer BDP-53FD/LX55, let's give that one a few days. I should have mine tomorrow and should be able to test it soon. I'm hoping that like FLAC, they will have reserved 176.4 KHz for the flagship player.
