I recently bought a used ADS/Braun Atelier P2 and it came with a stylus but having no experience with record players, I don't know if it needs replacing. I was told it works but looks like it's missing the needle?

Stylus says Grado XC+ on it.

If I do need to replace this, are the cartridges universal or do I need to get a certain type?

Looks like no needle. I would say something like a Shure 97Xe is a nice moving magnet cart which can be had in the $75-$99 price range. Check the Needle Doctor they have an extensive selection which includes the whole Grado line if you choose to go in that direction. I don't know what type of sound your looking for Grados are on the warm lush side and Shures are more nuetral. If you like rock and more dynamics at the top end look for Audio Technica. All these carts a very good just depends on your taste.

I don't recognize the XC+ model number, I would contact either Grado itself or an authorized dealer to see if they make an appropriate replacement stylus. If not, you'll have to go for a whole new cartridge, such as the Shure M97.

I see, so something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Shure-M97xE-...ht_3446wt_1396 should just plug right in?

I looked up replacement stylus's and they all seem to be around $50, so I wouldn't mind just replacing the entire cartridge.

For a $9 difference you'd be better off w/a new cart. I used the 97xE when I had my Yamaha PF-800 and got excellent results. A very good cart for the money and for $59 a real steal.
