I have a Toshiba SR-F451 turntable, and when I press "play" the arm will skip/slide in a fast manner, from the
rim of the record to the center. I just installed a Shure M97xE Audiophile cartdrige. How do I fix this problem?

You might need to setup tonearm.

It sounds like the new cartridge is lighter than the original, and you did not set the new cartridge for the proper tracking force, so the arm is "floating" rather than dropping to the record.

On most turntables, you rotate the weight at the rear of the arm until you set a tracking force of about 2 to 3 grams, but the scale markings will be wrong until you 'ZERO IT OUT" for the new weight of the new cartridge.

You need to turn the weight so that the cartridge "floats", not going up or down, and turn the scale at the front of the weight to zero without turning the weight itself. Just hold the weight still while turning the indicator scale to ZERO.

Once the scale says zero with the cartridge floating, then you can turn the weight to a position where the indication is between 2 and 3 and it should work properly.

If you don't understand how to do this refer to the manual. If you don't have the manual, get some help from an experienced turntable person.

First, rebalance your cartridge and set the tracking weight. Commsysman outlines the basic procedure, but the tracking weight for the M97 should not exceed 1.5 g. Then set the antiskate for the same amount.

If you need more info on your turntable, you might want to check our vinylengine.com. There may even be a downloadable manual, if you need it.

If you can't explain how it works, you can't say it doesn't.—The High-End Creed
