That's what happens when you listen to gears at different volume levels. Even 2 of the same model will sound different if you listen like that.

Despite most amplifiers having frequency responses of 1-100kHz +/- 0.1dB and unmeasurable levels of THD,
How did you find that out?

there is a lot of other, very measurable specifications that play a vital role in signal reproduction.
Such as?

People are also pretty well guaranteed to hear differences if they can't do quick switching, or mask the identifies of what they are listening to.

From 30 years of experience a lot of people have moral dilemmas if they sold high end audio for a long time and then do some ABX testing.

It is the rare dealer or manufacturer who doesn't slide quickly into full denial rather than believe the evidence of their ears.

I've decided to sell all my equipment and go back to a $50 BD player connected to a brand new, bottom of the line Sony AVR since there is no difference in sound quality.

2-Ch (HT L/R): Oppo BDP-105 BD, Adcom GFP-750 pre, Bryston 10B Sub Xover, Bryston 4BSST2 / Paradigm Signature S4 v.2 (L/R), (2) SVS SB12-NSD (Subs)
Home Theater: Bryston 4BSST2 amp / Paradigm CC-590 (C), Outlaw 7700 amp / (4) Def Tech UIW-RSSII (LS/RS/LB/RB), Samsung 46” 3D LCD

Don't forget to throw in Monoprice or Blue Jeans cabling as well. You'll now have a system which far exceeds AVS forum expectations.

Not a bad idea. I have a $69 BD player that works as well as any. No reason to think a $50 model wouldn't cut the mustard as well. I have a $125 one also. It is bigger. No question at all that a sony receiver has a flat frequency response and inaudible distortion. In its direct stereo mode it should sound like any other receiver in the same mode. Makes sense to me. I've bought my cabling from Monoprice for years. Never been disappointed. I recommend them as well. What I don't recommend is looking down on people who have more audio experience in their little fingers than you have ever acquired. We've been where you are long ago. Perhaps one day you will be where we are.

Seems like you got lucky and didn't get a batch of their RCA cables in which the plugs were too tight. I now much prefer the screw-on RCA plugs from other brands, but for a $69 player it doesn't really matter I suppose.

At what pplayer price should cables matter?
My player has a MSRP of $499 (paid less then $200 for it on clearance), should I not be using monoprice cables with it? If not, why not?

All my cables be it hdmi, speaker wire, banana plugs, RCA IC's are all from monoprice, never had a problem with any of them. I even use some wire management products from them.

If you, or anyone for that matter, can prove conclusively that there is an issue using monoprice stuff i'm all ears. Otherwise subjective claims of brand/price superiority are meaningless and have a tendency to provide the "phool" in "audiophool".

I don't need snobs to tell me how to think, thank you!

The $69 player, like other Blu Ray players uses HDMI.

The point being is that a digital connection bypasses a ton of potentially expensive hardware that might be in the BD player, but whose active location is now the AVR. I admit it, I don't buy $50 DVD players for my home audio system. The $100 BD players are more to my liking. That isn't how we did audio 15 years ago. Back then, we were highly dependent on the digital player for our digital/analog conversions.

The price/performance of electronics continues to improve dramatically. I recently purchased a a new audio interface for a new computer. I did some checking around, and an audio interface that costs $30-40 today can be the performance equal of ones I paid $399 for quite happily about 10 years ago. I would have used the onboard interface, but it was non-functional. Getting a plug-in audio interface was the easy way out.

Here are the results of a third party test of the Asus Xonar DG:

Here is an Amazon ad offering it for $26.80

Here are the results of a third party test of the Card Deluxe which sold for $399 ten years ago:

The numbers are similar, no?

Only a few dB different!

Do you think that measurements cannot characterize DACs?
