Hi I'm new on here and although it's an awesome resource I'm finding some of the posts a bit intimidating to say the least! I mean that in the way I don't know much about the electronics and technical stuff!
My humble questions are;
I have a Marantz cd 6000 Ki sig and I LOVE the sound from it, it's now almost 10 years later starting to skip and not read discs. Should I have the laser assembly replaced and will it affect the sound/performance?
Should I just move onto the new cd6005 with its rave reviews and how does it compare sound wise?
Thank you in advance! Alan 😊👍

Actually, you can get the CD5004 for only $349.

It is amazingly good.

I am certain that it will sound much better than your old one. The DAC chips in it are SO much more accurate and capable than the 15-year-old chips in the 6000 that there is little comparison.

Stereophile tested it recently and was very impressed with it. I suggest that you check out that review online.

I wouldn't waste a lot of money on an old unit whose reliability will always be questionable, and whose DAC chips are 3 generations beyond obsolete. Time marches on.

DACs I tested in the late 90s had excellent performance. The biggest differences I saw between DACs then and now are 1) price went way down for similar performance 2) DAC chips got smaller and used less power 3) audio DACs are now often included in chips that do other things, such as audio processing, video processing, etc. Time marches on, indeed.

As far as audibility goes, the new ones will sound excellent, just like the old ones did. smile.gif

For every new thing I learn, I forget two things I used to know.

Hey thanks everyone for the feedback ok you've helped me make my mind up! I've managed to find the CD 5004 online for a bargain at just under €200!! I don't need USB ports etc on my player just a solid CD player so hopefully this one will do the job. Ill post my opinion when it arrives so thanks again guys really appreciate your input! 👍😊

Well CD5004 just arrived today so have it set up. Hard to tell just yet if it sounds better than the 6000 Ki but I suppose it will take time to break in. On that note can I ask what's the duration/procedure for burning the laser in or do I even have to do that? Thanks a million again! Alan 😊

Hard to tell if it sounds better because they both probably sound the same.

There is no break-in needed for the laser or for anything else on a CD player.

Hi Beaveav thanks for replying, glad to hear that. I've always thought it's just sensory adaptation that gives the CD players their different sound. Either way I'm loving the detail from this player, can't believe I picked this up for 200€ shipped. It does a great job of MP3 playback too! So far, very happy, thanks again Commsysman for the recommendation too! 👍😊😊😊👍

Just an update on this post. Thinking of replacing my 12 yr old NAD C340 amp with the matching pm5004 amp for my Cd5004. I can get it for under 200€ Any opinions on whether that should make any difference? Should I stick with the NAD? I have Monitor Audio BX2s. Thanks guys!

SOME of the new ones MAY sound excellent, just like SOME of the old ones did. Others, ehh, not so much.

Uhm, I think you mean this:
NEARLY ALL of the new ones DO sound excellent, just like MOST of the old ones did. Rare exceptions, ehh, yeah, not so much.

I believe I have done lab evaluations on more DACs than you have. wink.gif

My, my. That's a rather long nose you're looking down, Chiefy. And, like some of the other "lab" evaluators that contribute to this forum: you see, but you do not observe, Watson.
Live and learn.

Wait, you accuse me of looking down a long nose, then you follow it up with a condescending insult assuming I don't understand what I test or that I don't listen to what I test - when you know nothing about me or my background.

Who is really looking down the long nose here? rolleyes.gif

Got any more cliches or folksy sayings to share instead of, you know, actual content?
