Hi guys...

So I popped my first SACD into my SACD Sony player that I connected to my Denon 4311 via cables (not HDMI) and I see that on the CD player I can pick what sound I want ... 5.1, stereo, etc ... however ... my receiver doesn't seem to show that it's affected by what CD player is outputting.

Should the receiver be set to Pure? Straight? Standard?

what am I doing wrong?

thanks

receiver should be set to pure direct. Your SACD player does all the work.

Yea but when I change in my SACD setting to play 5.1 surround, my receiver still plays it in Stereo

You should have 5 or 6 RCA cables going from your SACD player to your receiver, not just the L and R cables.

If you are using the analog connections, you will need to use the 5.1 connection.

I know where the plugs would go on the SACD player ... but on my 4311, where would these connect to?

You would want to use the "Ext In" connection set for 5.1 analog SACD.

So, turns out I already got the Monster cable hooked in. Problem is I only had the 2 front L&R connected to CD input.

Now, thanks to you guys, I changed and plugged all 3 cables into correct 5.1 "Ext In".

Only problem is .... what input should I change to on the receiver??? :-) I don't see any "Ext In" on my remote.

thanks. can't wait to hear the sound

Refer to pages 29,82 and 84 of your owners manual. You must "assign" the
"Ext in" to an input....ie-CD

You do realize that your going to have to do the set-up on your
SACD player for 5.1 sound. Ie- speaker small or large -distances
And levels! wink.gif

Pages 22 & 23 of your Sony owners manual.

I am a lil late here, but What SACD are you trying to play?? Not all SACDs are in multi channel - a lot play just in stereo.

You can check here  http://www.sa-cd.net/    they will give you the specs on ur SACD

Yes you will have to to connect 6 different cables (not just 2)  from your analog out from ur SACD player into the EXT IN (also referred to as Analog in) on ur Receiver

and yes Grasshoppers is right again that u need to go to the menu on ur SACD player and select 5.1, speaker size and maybe even layer to read on a hybrid sacd...some default to regular cd, you have to set it to read sacd layer.

Hope this helps a little.

All done and works great, thank you
Appreciate you digging up the PDF manual :-)

At playback I have it set as "MCH Direct" .... I don't bother to go into "5-Large-SW" or 5-Small-SW" ..... or is MCH Direct not giving me the true 5.1 SACD experience???

I also notice that when I change layer from SACD to CD while music is playing, there is absolutely no difference. As I go back and forward. Song doesn't even stop. There is no audible indicator that something just changed.

I knew you would figure it out.wink.gif I have a similar Sony SACD changer, not the ES model.
(SCD-CE595) hooked up to a 2 channel stereo receiver.
I run an Oppo DVD player via HDMI on my 5.1 system to play SACD's that have the 5.1 layer

Multi Channel direct is probably just fine.
I wasn't sure that was the correct PDF for your Sony, a lucky guess.

Your last sentence is curious to me. I was never able to tell the difference
Between a 2channel track on the CD layer and the 2 channel track on a SACD layer.
And I have the same speakers as you. (2 channel only) studies have been done saying
There is little to no AUDIBLE difference between the two. (2 channel only) I would have to
Agree with this.

To me where SACD gets fun is when you have a 5.1 mixed SACD, that's what I look for.
(Played on a different system) I really like having the discrete (different) sounds coming from
The different speakers.

What kind of music is on your SACD collection(s)??

Yea, I played Pink Floyd yesterday in the 5.1ch .... very cool hearing those clocks chime from all angles around me. I just purchased "Yo Yo Ma SACD" .. classical music as well as Mozart Requiem.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000079BGJ/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

should be very interesting to hear.

P.S. As my 4 month old girl grows bigger and I start worrying about her turning over those bookshelves Sierra-1 off of their stands, I may use this excuse to get the Ascend Tower speakers :-)

this is so weird.

I hear 5.1 sound but when in the player i change to 2.1 or change layer SACD to CD, song keeps playing like it did. No difference in sound, no stopping of the song. The only time something happens when I change a setting in the SACD player is when I change from that MCH Direct mode to any other modes like 5-Large+SW.

My set up is...

Receiver is set to Pure Direct
SACD player connected through 6 cables
On receiver it's connected to EXT-IN

Sound seems to be surround but like I said, when I change the settings on SACD player, nothing happens.

With my Sony SACD player (S-5100) it prompts me to 're-insert the disk' when I make a change to the SACD or DSD settings. Might be worth a try with yours. Hit stop square, open the tray, close and try again and see if there is a difference. I don't think these players can change layers and output formats like that on the fly while it is playing.

:-)

Pink Floyd is great in 5.1 but I wish they would of made it the original 4 channel. I have yet to hear a classical piece that sounds better in multi channel mode. It sounds better at first but the more I listen the more I just listen in 2 channel. I'm running my other 2 channel setup's speakers as the back channel so I have front speaker quality in the back.

Most recordings are just done with two mics and the back channel is created but I have a few that use multi mics but the 2 channel is still better.

Let me know what you think of the Requiem.

One thing I would like to know is do classical disc use the center channel a lot? I heard in general they do not use it a lot. I'm not running a center channel as I would need to find another matching tower for my speakers and I really do not listen to enough multi channel stuff to really use it.

Pure Direct should be N/A as EXT-IN should be "Pure Direct" anyway. EXT-IN should not use any processing from your receiver. For example if I send a 2 channel signal in EXT-IN I cannot use Dolby to create a surround field.

2 channel mode on your SACD player should be 2.0 not 2.1. Unless you set your front speakers to small in the SACD player.
