Hi.

A few weeks ago I bought a Sangean HTD-1X but I can't get it to work properly. I have the following equipment:
  • Pioneer A/V VSX D914
  • Oppo CD Player, and
  • Strata Mini Speakers

I don't think my A/V receiver is compatible with the Sangean because I've called Sangean for help, they've walked through the connection and still I get a loud "HISS" from even local radio stations.

Can anyone say if I have to add something like a Coby HDR650
Component HD Radio® Receiver (http://www.cobyusa.com/?p=prod&prod_...3&pcat_id=3005) for the Sangean to work properly?

Thanks again.

Have you tried to use the optical cable to go from the Sangean to the Pioneer? If you are getting any noise then, there must a be a faulty component.

Can you be more specific on the problem? Can you actually HEAR the local stations but get the hiss as well?

It almost sounds like the input gain to the receiver is way too low. For example, if you have a cable box, and use the cable box's menu to lower the cable box volume (not the TV's volume, but the cable box), you'll really have to crank the TV volume to get the sound to come out. But since you've really turned down the gain to the TV from the cable box, the TV's own audio amplifier has to try and boost the very low input signal. And in doing so, the "noise floor" is going to be amplified, too. Hence, you'll get a lot of hiss and other undesirable sound.

So please be more specific on what's happening. Can you at least hear the radio stations? Do you really have to crank the receiver volume?

The Sangean just needs an antenna (you did connect the supplied dipole or connect to an existing antenna which you know works?), and a connection to an amplifier, either analog or digital. It's a proper radio tuner like any other.

1-Connect the CD player to the same RCA input used by the Sangean Tuner. If a hiss, it's the receiver. If not, continue.
2-Connect the Sangean Tuner to the tested RCA input and check the Sangean signal strength display. If the signal strength is ok and it hisses, return the defective Sangean unit for a new one. If the signal strength is poor get a better antenna than the one supplied. Any quality FM antenna will work. Any antenna calling itself an HD antenna is nothing more than an FM antenna.
