Robert,
If it doesn't work out, there's always this box to build. It'll cut back on your boredom for a bit

You know you want to, LOL

Robert,
I'd think the MJ series 18" would be similar to the original driver
You should measure the DCR of the coil with a DMM to see what you've got. Maybe you'll find the source of the buzzing while your in there

Dan

It sounds like it has a loose spider or something. At moderate excusion, sounds like a "flap, flap". I took the woofer out, but I see no visible problem.
Just trying to make a decision before the salegoes off.

Thanks,

Robert

Has anyone used the mj18. I looked it up, and it looks to be just what I probably need.

Thanks,

Robert

I havn't seen any mention of it but the MJ-18 has been replaced by the MJ-18M. It has a bit more of the usual (Xmax, power handling) and a lower FS for a slightly higher price. Check it out here.

Yeah, I saw that a few days ago, very sad for me, thankfully, they still have the old ones at SSA, who knows when they'll run out, I'd love if it they put them on clearance though, I'd buy me up an army of my favorite subs of all time.

Robert,
looks like you've got about ~12 hours to find the noise. Have you run the driver while out of the box yet? Usually easy to locate the source of noise at this point. Flapping is usually a torn or stretched spider oil-caning.

You should measure the resistance of the coil, if it turns out the stock driver is 8 ohm I'd put in 8 ohm MJ 18" since they are still available @ $116.

The Maelstrom drivers are quite a deal, but your boxes are 100l or less, they will work but more space is necessary for optimum performance. If you'd consider building the Maelstroms boxes down the road I say pull the trigger and look forward to another project.

Regards,
Dan

No driver test today. Too much activity around here to do any kind of testing and disassembly. Just trying to use this time to get some ideas going and see if I shold do the sale woofers. If I don't get the sale woofers, I am in no rush. I could take my time. I seem to be creating projects way faster than I can get them accomplished.

Thanks,

Robert

Hey I have 4 MJ18's that have been used lightly for sale. I know most people say that their subs were lightly used when they sale them, but these really have. They are about 6 months old. PM me if you are interested.

bl is pretty high. What do you think? Tried to model it and got a graph but the program won't allow me to adjust the input signal and it does not change.

Thanks,

Robert,
now I after looking at that I see the Maelstrom is several dB more sensitive @2.83v due to being 4Ω and just plain being better in that small a$$ box ~100l.
The 8Ω MJ18 looks pretty lame but it's probably OK. The original driver was probably just as mediocre.

But without the original driver params I've got no idea what to expect. And that amp will probably have a LT circuit.

So in the end I think the Maelstrom would be bass heavy on the low end, and possibly kill the amp due to the 4Ω load if driven too hard.

I know that wasn't much help, and that's sort of the point
I don't think the Maelstrom makes a good band-aid

But if you buy Maelstroms, in the end you can have good bass if you go DIY and build cabs.

I'm having a tough time not ordering 2 more Maelstroms as I type this

Regards,
Dan

I just finished putting one together 5 pillows = 9.3466Hz tune. I ran a very high level sine wave below tuning to check for port noise, the suspension makes far more noise than the port. There are people in the house so I'm gonna listen to at lower level to get a feel for it's sound. When the house clears out, I'll open it up and see what it's got. So far I like what i see and hear, I was modualting the door in it's frame rather hard down to about 7.5Hz = 2" p-p excursion.

Dan

Close Mic response:
Red=Driver
Blue= Port
Green= Average offset +15dB

I don't have a SPL meter so SPL is NOT actual

Response at LP looks like the blue port trace but with my huge 36Hz room mode bump, hopefully the second sub evens it out some. I may take out a pillow to raise the tuning.

This takes all the K1 has with no distortion, I've never been able to light the clip indicators without worry before. The EP2500 is scheduled to arrive in the morning

Dan

same as previous measurements

You guys are lucky your not getting things all the way up here in Canada.
I had 3 broken 10" midranges out of 4 when they were shiooed to me. Thank god PE is a pleasure to deal with.

My ep2500 came to me in one piece......................except 1 of those little bags for moisture with the little plastic pellets broke loose and I had to take the amp apart to make sure they were all out of the inside. Burning plastic is not something I am fond of.

Today is definitely not my day. I just got out the second Maelstrom-X and was going to put it in my cabinet, the frame is cracked and bent. Looks like the driver was trying to chew it's way out of the box. At least it doesn't rub.

13.5megs full res hosted on SkyDrive: http://cid-25586ae8216fdb6f.skydrive...e/DSCN3548.MOV

This is ********, makes me wanna go postal, but my delivery drivers are cool, so I got no one to be pissed at. I really feel for Kevin in a situation like this, personally I'm wouldn't want to deal with this type of crap. I spoke with Kevin earlier today about something that didn't require a RMA or damage claim, and He is great to deal with.

Dan

I thought my 5400's had a rough ride. I just don't know why, if the job is to deliver things, why can't or don't the shipping companies either do it right or just charge the right price to deliver it correctly the first time. Just shoving heavy boxes on a conveyer, and dropping them regardless of fragility or not seems to be disrespectful to the customer both purchaser and supplier. I feel for you Dan. Did you get the ED situation corrected?

Good luck,

Robert

How was your Maelstrom-X packed? I know when I ordered my Tempests from CreativeSound they shipped them packed in premolded Styrofoam ... there was very little chance of them getting damaged...

It's some die cut foam, looks nice actually:

apparently it took a hit that split the layers allowing the driver to chew it's way out

I'm not looking to send it back unless Kevin wants to make a DHL claim or it behaves badly.

Dan

Sorry to hear about the run of bad luck Dan! Reminds me of when I got my first XXX. UPS apparently dropped it down a flight of steps or something. I mean it was 114lbs in a wooden shipping tube and it was so damaged that there were screws floating around in the tube that got attached to the VC. I just got it back from RE Audio from reconeing it ($350)

Hey your measurements look pretty good in that box. The gold plot for your port looks interesting. Is the peak at about 170hz the first port resonance, if so that's not bad for a 50+" vent? I wonder whether it will compress with the Maelstrom at high volume?
