a little bit of disappointing news...looks like svs has chosen not to participate this time.

it was a long shot that they might send an ultra, but we had to ask. :-)

ed and the rest of the guys at svs are first class, with exceptional products and service, but it just didn't work out this time.

Ed did write me today, and he had legitimate reasons why he wouldn't be able to send one. From a business aspect, I can't say I disagree with him. Without going into specifics, I will say that from his e-mail he seems like a sound man and I will continue to recommend his products to anyone looking for a commercial solution. I think their products are top notch.

Onto other things, I don't have enough extra MDF, but don't have a problem buying a sheet for the 13W7, I just hope I have the time to build it. I've learned that my wife and I (ie. ME!!!) will get to do yard work and spring cleaning for then next couple weeks. As you can tell I'm overjoyed (HAH)!!!!

I would like to have a Maelstrom down too. I was actually considering buying one, but I caught the 19Ov.2 on sale and it was too good a deal to pass up. That and the maelstrom seemed to model better in a box about twice the size of mine. Like I said before, I think I'm going to have to look heavily at the 21" maelstrom when it comes out. That is a huge driver and I'm not one for bragging rights, but come on, it's a 21" subwoofer!! It would be a great second sub addition.

Let me tell ya, the LMS is worth a listen...

I really like the Mal's but that is the next step up the food chain for me. That extra excursion is really what I need to get the output Im looking for to keep it down to 3 drivers in my room... The SQ from those is just plain sweet from top to bottom - spl and hz range...

I would love to have a lms. It models so well and doesn't need a huge box to do it. You can also put it in just about any box. Sealed check. Ebs check. Llt check. PR check. For me though it is cost prohibitive. I don't really have constraints on size so my money is better spent with duals or more of a cheaper driver. The sound may lack a bit, but I would have much greater output and headroom for the same price. If I were resticted by size, the ,lms would be the way to go.

We are looking at ten for a start time but I will be up well before then. I think ricci may get to come over Friday night for some setup stuff.

Well I'm stuck at the comp for the next hour or so as I'm doing a focus group study for new balance....so lets talk!

I'm 90% sure I will be able to make it. I'll do scuba checkoffs some other time. If I come do you guys want me to bring my Bic H-100? It's nowhere near these other subs...but it is a cheap/commercial option. Also, I have a friend who lives in the area and he isn't into this stuff like me, but he likes it. Would it be alright to bring him along?

Bring your bic along vili. That way you can have direct comparison insight on what you have and what you want.

NO OUTSIDERS!! Just kidding. Bring your friend along. He may want to buy something after he hears our stuff.

Great, I'll ask if he wants to go.

Whenever I get there does someone who is bringing a DIY sub mind showing me how they have everything hooked up...driver and how it is mounted, plates, etc.?

I'm doing this new balance survey for $25. Supposed to last 75 minutes. Gotta save money for a sub somehow lol! I sold my rear projection TV for $400 and have someone who I think will give me $100 for my old receiver that I replaced so I'm on it.

That's a good start. Besides building equipment you have enough to buy a setup like mine already. You could save some a little more and get a maelstrom and that would be a small step up.

My $500 rebate for my Epson 6500 should be in relatively soon as well so that will help. Time will tell as if I get my heart set on the LMS or something like that thats probably what I will go for.

Your problem with that may be finding one. I don't think they are made anymore. Most people are buying used on eBay or forum classifieds. Keep an eye out and snag one if you find it.

Ya I've already seen 2 for sale last week. I could probably find one, it would just be making sure thats what I want first and of course the actual build process.

That's great! Let me know when you ship it and I'll keep up with the tracking so I know someone will be here when it arrives. I'll PM you to ask you a couple more things.

Vili, you'll have plenty of options here to listen to and make a choice that way. The only major DIY subs we won't have here are Sounsplinter and Ficar. Have you looked at either one of those subs?

Soundplinter RL-S15...

thanks. i got confused because i had plugged in the 15" in my winisd and just called it the lms-ultra. oops.

with the 18" specs entered, now i see why people have boners for this driver. the low qes (high bl/low re) suggests that it will sound as tight through the mid-bass as most pro-audio subs, which is remarkable considering the 500g moving mass. but its impedance locus doesn't allow it to be as efficient higher up.

additionally, the linear bl isn't represented in the t/s specs. surely that improves performance even further.

okay, i get it now.

I honestly have only really looked at 3 DIY subs. Shiva, Maelstrom, LMS. I don't know that much about any of them to be honest, but those are the 3 that are mentioned the most.

I will need a schooling lesson when I get down there, as far as charts and specs I don't know what any of that means for audio.

You should download WinISD to start playing around with. It's pretty easy to learn and you will be able to see a rough depiction of what the subs will be able to do in different boxes/alignments.

LTD, I'm still learning myself about the T/S parameters. I know how to use them, but confused on what most mean. It's a slow learn for me, but I'll get there.

everybody is confused for at least two reasons. #1 t/s parameters are incomplete as they only describe small signal performance. most of the folks around here are more interested in large signal performance, aka performance at the limits! #2 t/s parameters speak to a limited set of measurements. as such, some aspects of performance are missed.

these two researchers from down under have made possible so much i feel bad about pointing out any deficiencies in their work. i don't follow the literature so closely as to know where everything stands, that should be the domain of the people who do this for their full time jobs. ;-) my understanding is that wolfgang klippel is among those that have moved the ball down the field in a significant way, but his findings have not yet been incorporated into the kind of freeware that most of us use to model driver performance.

Kyle,

That's awesome that you are sending the Worx sub. . What's the tune on that bad boy, 30ish? What do you suggest for the HPF 25-30hz 12db octave be ok?

~24hz tune

put two butterworths at 20Hz, if you only have 1, thats OK.

I read somewhere that its tuned to 24 hz. I may be wrong about that. Depending on how the sub works I would imaging 22 or so might work.
