I just finished putting together my THT..I took extra care to make sure that there are no leaks.. and I used a classic Tempest driver.I couldn't wait to have the second build so I can try them together, so my son helped me haul it from the shop to the tv room. My initial impression of it was of mixed feelings... although it put out lot it failed to match my previous setup... in certain areas.. like in visceral impact.. but it some areas it seemed to excel.I set my Denon 989 to 80hz crossover point and my main speakers are at 60hz... if any of you feel this is off let me know. I also had to boost the subwoofer output on the Denon from -10 to -3..but that was to be expected since my previous setup consisted of 4x15 in a 60 cu.ft box. and it simply was too much for my 300 sq.ft room. To put it in other words, one THT is equal to roughly 1.5 times my 4x15 setup..so if I build the second one it will surely surpass it. If any of you have any ideas I can implement throw them my way...

I used one channel of my Crest CPX 2600 which is around 900 watts... I am planning to sink them into the wall where the other subs are now.. one on top of the other so their fronts are flush with the wall.
Here are some pics I snapped along the way...

Good looking build.
When do we get to see some graphs with that Tempest?

I'm confused. You said you had to raise the subwoofer level on the THT to match the output level of the four 15's. So this just tells us the four 15's were more efficient, which is to be expected.

But then you go on to say the THT was 1.5x louder than the four 15's. I realize this is a different sort of comparison altogether. But it still doesn't make sense?

Btw thank you for not posting that you're building a THT when you haven't even bought the wood or woofer yet.

Kanaris , glad to see you got your build finished.
Have you turned the mouth of the horn toward the wall yet? You should get more output that way.

If at first you dont succeed , get a bigger hammer !

I was confusing wasn't I? What I meant to say is the THT was roughly equivalent to nearly half of the output of my previous setup.. So 2 THT's would be equal or surpass it.

Still .. considering what your comparing it to tho, you didnt expect it to surpass what you had.. Or did you ?

CZ is correct. It takes 3 sealed Tempests (with 3x the power) to just surpass one tempest in a THT through most of the passband. But the 3 sealed will do below 22Hz with much more authority than the THT. No replacement for displacement....

Placed together two will give you roughly 6dB more than one below 80Hz. If you're not getting that something isn't right.

6db above what I was getting with the 4 tempest in a ported 60cu.ft box?

Kanaris what kind of levels were you getting before? You have any graphs? Where does it excell that your others didnt? Im going to assume the only place the THT is worse is in the extension and over all output levels. But like you said once the second gets up and running it should surpass. I would think the SQ would be better as well as have better tactile response. Your going from an amazing setup to begin with what was your goal by changing? I am only asking so many questions because i am very interested in what you have to say. Your change has had my interest peaked since day one. I look forward to your second being in place and final thoughts.

My previous setup consisted of a 60 cu.ft. closet. The problem with that was that it was coupled to the house.. even though I tried to insulate it.. I was literally afraid to put the volume up too high, things upstairs started to move.. I wanted something that would move less the house and move me more.. sort of a drag car avoiding burning too much rubber and getting better 1/4 miles times.

I am expecting these THT's to do that...since they are in their own boxes and will try to decouple them from the house with rubber isolators...

I will get to work and get the second one going... and hopefully post some graphs.

I see now it makes sense. All while not breaking the bank either! Are you intending on stuffing these in that closet as well? If so, thats too bad you didnt have the room to effectively corner load them. Your going to miss out on quite a bit of output by not going this route. By properly corner loading it helped to flatten out my FR and netted me 10db more output in the lower FR with just a single THT. I could only imagine what it would do with two stacked in a corner like AirSupply's setup in a smaller room. But it should still get you what you want. All you guys building two are making me want a second which is truely not needed at all in my case and will more than likely just get me in trouble haha.

I too thought the same when I replaced my IB w/ a DTS-10. At moderate volumes, yes. Less house shaking. At reference level no. My wife is still awakened 3 stories above.

BTW-were those speakers in the background absorbing some of the LFE?

Man, the THT is just too cheap NOT to build two

Trust me, when we move this summer..... I'm building two more, just to be ignorant.

Ignorance is bliss right haha. Man you should have amazing in room response and ridiculoas head room with 4.

Kanaris, its amazing how musical the THT is isnt it? I too was shocked and was the only reason i built one. I hope that in closet placement there will be sufficeint to surpass your last setup. Im pretty confident it will. But the THT is very tactile and good luck finding a point where you can actually hear any distortion from it either. Im glad to see your outlook changing from the first post, you didnt seem to "into it" at first.

Reece... yesterday I had a few problems... my blu ray player started flashing a 'hdmi' error code... then my Denon wasn't sending a signal to the sub out in stereo mode... so I was really starting to get fed up... but now I took care of those problems and I sat down today with a different mindset..to REALLY listen to the THT and I was truly impressed.

Are you going to point the horn vent towards the corner of the room?
I'm curious to see how it would affect the four 15's that would be right in front of it.

Thats good man im glad to hear that. Its like your so excited to get it done and have a listen. And when things dont go exactly according to plan its easy to get frustrated. I really do think that was somewhat of RobG's problem as well. Now hes good to go after some finer tuning and furniture rearrangement.
