It's this patent, if anyone is interested.

I've never understood how an entire STYLE can be patented. I can understand his PARTICULAR design of a particular sub, but patenting EVERY SINGLE variation on it just seems stupid and another example of how our patent and copyright system in the U.S. is completely f-d up

I can't make the dimensions on page one and page three of the pdf add up. I'm guessing this issue has been brought up and answered.

2 Points -

First, I would also buy at least 2 flat packs, maybe more..

Second, and this may be obvious, but have you asked Tom?

How many patents do you have?

I read the patent. It's actually very narrowly written, but by doing so, it covers all variants that seek to combine a front wave and a back wave in an additive manner by varying the path length between the two. That's a tapped horn... and it's his until 2030.

Have fun,
Frank

does that mean that we in the DIY community are going to have issues building other popular horn subs in the future?

I honestly think Erich would be okay selling the flat packs. They aren't tapped horns, they're just pieces of wood. If someone buys them and assembles them into tapped horns, that's not Erich's fault.

Also, I'm not a lawyer.

I get what you're saying, but I'm afraid I'll have to agree with @wormraper here...I understand that it's probably pretty shrewd, but it is also a sh!t move on Danley's part. It's one thing to patent his designs, but to confine it to the TH itself is pretty ballsy. What's next...a cease and desist on lilMike's designs, and wiping all the helpful TH build threads here on AVS?

I'm sure you're going to win Mr. Danley over by insulting him.

The Wright Brothers effectively patented the airplane. Colt patented the revolver. This is nothing new. AFAIK, TD has not made any moves after the DIY community. I don't know if anyone has contacted him and asked him about this DIY horn or any other. Until someone does, he refuses, and threatens legal action you're all getting bent out of shape over nothing and are needlessly attacking someone over a fictitious problem.

+1.
Tom is great guy and typically big supporter of DIY. Josh talks with him even after he designed Ghorn. Problem doesn't exist, no need get panties in a bunch.

Unless you want to start selling commercially tapped horn subs for pro audio and installed commercial sound and pair them with synergy horn main speakers I don't think it's going to be a problem.

I've never met Tom. But from what I've read in his posts and from people that have talked with him, he seems like a decent guy.

I think I sent him an email 2-3 years ago to see if a home version of the Synergy could be done, but didn't hear back. I assume he's pretty busy and probably gets a lot of emails too.

It may be worth considering that no one from DSL (Danley Sound Labs) has responded because to do so would acknowledge a project that could set precedence for them not defending their patent. Sure a 6.5" tapped horn DIY design might not impact their business but is it worth splitting hairs when they go after someone who has made a 15" tapped horn that could? While I have no inside knowledge, my day job does involve a fair bit of product from DSL, so I have interacted with Mike Hedden and Ivan Beaver who work with Tom, and find them all to be really great people who are excellent at their jobs. I can almost guarantee their lack of response is not to frustrate anyone here.

Sort of related, DSL came out with a whole bunch of new products at Infocom a couple weeks ago, so everyone is also busy I would suppose. None of the new product is up on the website yet, so probably lots of work to do... New concert touring cabinets, a lower cost, more affordable portable series, a new sub, a new outdoor speakers, a new line of amplifiers... lots of product for a small company...

I expect they would license use of the patent to Erich. The terms of which would of course be confidential. There wouldn't be a case of them not defending the patent.

A few years ago a company that was not in the business, nor ever intended to be in the business of making controlled LED lighting for aquariums put a stranglehold on the market.

You had to get a license through them in order to make a product which in turn raised the costs towards the end product and also caused a torrent of China made products as they don't seem to acknowledge the patent system.
