"Classic Fourier decomposition."

thanks mark. it is interesting to learn how much in this area isn't intuitive. who would have thought that a perfectly clean sinewave would have all those broadband effects. the plot was simply a five second sine wave out of audacity and straight into spectrumlab. my point was simply that if we are going to use spectrumlab in order to determine how clean a signal is, knowing how a clean signal looks would be the first step.

on second thought, now i am wondering if "burst" testing is picking up some of these kinds of distortions. it would seem that the start and stop might give false distortion results.

Listen. It's All Good.

Will OmniMic be able to measure electrical freq response, like an EQ's output?

I'm thinking NO on that one Noah - its a USB Mic only....

Not sure how you would hook it up to an output ?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.... what other tools are out there that will measure the elec freq... ?

Really any audio program with the ability to loopback should be able to examine an electrical signal.

If it supports a microphone that isn't USB, I wouldn't see why it wouldn't. Otherwise, you can do that with REW right now and for free.

It's USB to what looks like a mini USB on the back of the mic. How do you plan to implement a Loopback with that ?

That would be the funniest in stock I have seen if they are not ready to go. Even if they are not, it appears they are getting close.

And... what did you find out?

I can add it to the cart, but, that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Any word on the group/quantity buy? I have a way to ship through my work that might make it affordable for everyone if that's helpful.

Keep us posted Warp - and Happy New Year all!

I did contact PE about a group buy and even offered to buy 10 myself, have them shipped to me and ship them out to group buyers but they declined. They didn't even offer any other arrangement except to point out that it ships for free.

Hopefully Warp has better luck.

Ok - just got off the phone with my REP, and he said they have like 25, er - 24 now or so left that are at the Wharehouse. They are getting a shipment, which may be that Jan 12th date (unconfirmed).

They are not at this time discounting that product PERIOD, but may in the future and as of yet I can't get a quote at all for "large quantity"

The warehouse is closed until monday so filled orders will not be sent out until monday....

If you want one of these right away, they are open until 6pm C and obviously I shouldn't have to say that quantities are limited...
PE is a 1 day ship to me, so I'll have it on Tues, my day off to play with in the afternoon....
Thats all I got guys...

Cheers

I thought I remember someone saying that OmniMic measures down to 10 Hz, but I can't find it now to verify.

Is that correct?

Here's a feature that I doubt it has but would be very nifty in that it would allow isolating the effect of system changes, and effectively allow measuring electrical response:

Allowing one measurement to be set as the reference and subsequent ones to show response relative to it.

But wait, no need for time dependence; allow any stored response to be divided (I guess that would be subtracted for dB) by any other.

Fed Ex just dropped mine off, I couldn't be happier.

However, with the holiday upon us, I've got very little time to experiment. It is a nice little package, but it only has a quick reference guide with no additional paperwork. Perhaps the accompanying discs (2) has further documentation.

My first caveat, I wish the supplied usb cable was much longer.

Good luck

Ahhh great FOH - your the winner....

You could just grab a USB extension cable and you should be good to go...

Found this on a search

Max length of USB 2.0 ?

5m. However, if you cascade 5 hubs with 5m USB cables, this will allow you to connect a device 30m away.

It just occurred to me that I spoke to PE on 12/17, and they promised they'd be in on 12/30, and distributed asap thereafter. This being the afternoon of the 31rst, that was very good customer service.

I've purposely held off on my IB install, because I wanted to take more accurate measurements wrt placement. So, I truly am happy to get this piece in hand. BTW, the two included discs are labeled Operations Disc, and Audio Test Tracks.

Also, the mic itself has a specific calibration code. That only makes sense, but I was not aware of it. Asap, I'll load the software and poke around and see what this thing has to offer.

It comes with a 6' USB to Mini USB, I found this 15' replacement at Monoprice for 2 bucks.

I too was curious about the length limitations of the USB protocol.

I also interested in this kit.
I'm a longtime ARC user and have serious doubts that the ARC supplied mic and software is of any use above 5kHz or more specifically above the tweeter xover point.

It ain't ignorance causes so much trouble; it's folks knowing so much that ain't so

sorry for missing out on much of the thread.

i love the price (kind of) and the simplicity for the everyman (very much).

what are the primary disadvantages of this system vs. an external sound card, calibrated mic, and rew?

does it work full range? is the calibration right (if so, across what frequency band)? are there any key performance metrics in rew that this software does not provide?

hny guys.

sorry if this is a dumb question I'm a noob looking to start measuring . Does this system allow you to save your FR as FRD files or is that just with some of the freeware programs. I want to use the omnimic to measure speakers so I can start designing

hny guys.

Its a plug and play solution. Other then that I have not read any advantages it will have over M-Audio mobile pre/calibrated Mic (ECM8000 or Dayton MM-6/HOLM (or ARTA or REW) solution.

You are essentially paying > $100 more for the assumption that there is no need to calibrated anything and it just works out of the box.

So far there has not been a discussion on what it really does so who knows what functionality exists. From all posts so far I would say YES its full range and YES it comes with a calibration file. As for REW metrics?? REW is not even the best choice for full range measurements. IMO HOLM (or ARTA) are far superior to REW for that, REW is fine for subwoofer measurements though. I just stepped up even further with SoundEasy so I have something new to learn now.

I about 99.9% it does! If it does not then its a VERY limited product for speaker design.
