hook up the meter to mic input instead of line in. I'm pretty sure its higher sensitivity.

I havent hooked the mic up yet, just looped line in to line out trying to get 10dB headroom. Should I skip the loop and hook the mic up?

If that FR was accurate, I'd say skip it. But I dunno.

Still gotta get your levels up though.

if line in to line out is presenting you with that much of a level difference, something probably isn't right.

What sound card do you have? Use those picture and video skills to post a picture of your soundcard. Is it an internal soundcard in your computer? Those almost never work right for REW or audio programs.

Start with the preferences main screen and make sure everything is working before going to anything else. You have a couple of things. Set the SC you are using as default in your control panel. Keep the control panel open while you try to figure this out. In REW you have a couple of things. You have the main measurement channel you can switch between right and left with a check box. You have the drop down box that should show all of your available inputs and outputs. Make sure those are set to what they should be. Try a few of them if you aren't getting a signal. Also you have your output level and your input level. Run the check levels routine until you can get the signal up into the green. You should be able to clip your input with a loopback. (Most any SC can put out more voltage than the input can handle. If you can't get up above -40 or so then something is wrong with the set-up. Did you turn up the output level in REW to the max?

I wouldn't worry about posting max spl #'s below 30hz off of a Ratshack. Anything with a generic cal file with corrections of 30 to 40db which may or may not even be in the ballpark for that particular meter, I wouldn't take too seriously for spl measurements below 20hz. Those correction values seem WAY high to me. I remembered them being about 18 to 20db all the way down at 10hz. I could be wrong though since I never used a RS meter for more than a day. Anyway we want to seem some 3-200hz sweeps at a moderate volume of maybe 95db. Hell I'd like to see some without any correction factor applied for the RS at all first. We can get into loading a cal file into REW later. Also make sure measure with the meter where your head usually is when you watch a movie.

Setting up REW can be a nightmare sometimes. Once you got it right then you start to realise how easy it actually is.

So stick with it buddy.

I'd like to wait to hook the mic up till it calibrates properly, I read through that link to HTS as well as read and re-read Ricci's suggestions. I'm still stuck. Id really like to get it through the calibration.

Yeah, so try the loop using the mic input and not the line in. Might help. Might not. Let's find out.

not what I expected: I thought Id simulate 4 IB3 18s in 256 cubes sealed to mimic the tower excursion without port loading. First with 10Hz HP to simulate electronics roll off, took 4kW to get to 40mm, removed HP took 3200 to 40mm

I figured that, but I didnt want to until told to do so, especially after seeing the FR graph off the chart. I don't know that mic in can handle full power from line out. Now that I have it in black and white and can blame you, I'll do what was apparent

i brought right to red bar 2dB below line in as Help said, which meant 100 with 10dB boost

when I click next and everything falls, left and right still have "noise". is that induced (bad) noise?

15dB headroom, Ill raise boost to 15dB and shoot for 10dB

new fr

you generally want as little boost as possible, max the level before touching the boost.

Run the check input level stuff. The output level should be about the same as the input. It's ok if the input is a little lower. even 15db headroom is fine.

Still, something is wrong judging by the crazy graphs. That's not supposed to happen. It's either a feedback issue, or something else. Make sure you have any settings for the inputs checked not to play it back out the speakers.

Go to control panel, sound, recording, double click microphone

next, go to listening, make sure listen to this device is unchecked.

go to enhancements, uncheck everything except dc offset cancellation.

In advanced, set it to 2 channel 16 bit 44100hz. See if that helps.

What do you get when you set the mic level to 100 and the boost to nothing? Try that.

Jordan,

I noticed that your input and output is set to default input. It should be set to the appropriate soundcard whether it be internal or external otherwise surely REW won't know what you are using.

cheers
