Not yet, but soon. We are just now getting to the deck off the three French doors in the ballroom. Poured the footings this week and will be building it this weekend. Then I get to finish sheetrocking the lower level so that we an finally get wine making operations moved to the new location. A lot of blood, sweat, and tears have gone into everything...and are still going.

the DTS-10s definitely dig lower. But 4 F20's I think would have e edge on output. They are some awfully loud subs. Of course the DTS-10's are no slouch either. I was putting hairline cracks in my sheetrock from just one DTS-10.

Dumb enough to spend lots of cash on this junk!

Sorry to everyone for my lack of presence here lately. We are still plugging away trying to get everything finished. My budget for subcontracting the lower level sheetrock was too small, so I have to DIY that as well. This week we are building a ~900SF deck off the ballroom's south wall where we have three French doors. Had to research, design, permitting, etc it all myself as well. Should have it finished by mid-next week or so. Then I will spend a week or two sheetrocking/mudding the lower level (which I have already about 50% finished). Surprisingly, the sound system does not really carry to the outside very much. That is to say I can crank it up so it is unbearable in the ballroom, but from the outside would probably never bother the neighbors even with all three french doors open (if I have the bass turned down). I had it cranked today while working on the deck. With the doors open, the bass does carry quite a distance outside...but only with the glass doors open. It must be the same concept of how whales communicate over great distances in the ocean lol. Shut the doors, and the bass is seriously dampened outside.

A couple of pictures from today are below:

Although we are generally getting too much rain in Iowa right now, today was great deck building weather with a light breeze and 75 Degrees. It seems our May weather is about a month late. I hope we don't just jump right into summer!

The first of four beams for the main part of the deck went up today. There was a little bit of learning curve on the first one as we got everything square. With the first one installed, the rest should go much more quickly. I designed the deck so that the decking will be perpendicular to the building, will use hidden fasteners, and will be using 20' planks in order to avoid butt joints (PT lumber). You can see baroque style iron balusters on the very left edge of the photo on the wheelchair ramp. The same will be used on the railing of the decks. The overall deck is two tiered, and covers about 45' x 20'. The 20 footings took 8 cubic yards of concrete!!!

Lookin' good. I had a bunch of outdoor projects including resealing my decks slated for Memorial Day. At least this past weekend left a few dry days for us! biggrin.gif

In addition to the dinner theater sound (4pi x 3, 1pi x 12, F20 x 4), I have been running speaker wire and installing in-ceiling speakers throughout the other rooms of the winery for ambient music. The speakers I have been purchasing are just some off the shelf no-name brand from Home Depot. They sound pretty darn good, and play much louder than they will ever be utilized for. Now that I am building the deck, I am starting to get ideas for accent lighting and outdoor speakers. The only downside to the dinner theater is that the acoustic properties of the room function so well that music does not really carry very well onto the deck...even with the french doors open. That is to say; for music to be enjoyable on the deck, it has to be turned up enough inside that conversations can no longer take place [inside]. There are 3 in-ceiling speakers on the main level, and 3 on the lower level for a total of 6. It has been my plan to run all of these in serial or parallel (or a combination of the two) off a single amp...probably another Crown XLS1000.

Anyone want to chime in on some decent outdoor speakers that can be integrated into the deck somehow? We are already over budget on the Winery remodel, so anything spent on this would be out-of-pocket. This means I would be looking for good bang for buck sort of speakers. Below are the latest images of our decks.

I picked up some cheap outdoor Yamaha speakers for $99 from Futureshop a chain store owned by best buy in Canada and I returned them the next day because they didn't sound that good. I will be going with a pair of Emotiva outdoor speakers that cost $199 but are on sale right now for $169. Have heard a lot of good things about them. http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/speakers/products/uom62

I picked up a pair of JBL s36 speakers, and they sound great above 100hz. They replaced some JBL n26 speakers that didn't sound that great (all sold as indoor outdoor speakers). They're kinda hard to find now, but run about 100-120/PR.

You have to chose your battles with outdoor audio, but for ambiant music outdoors, I would opt more multiple pairs of the above speaker. It's not DIY, but based upon my research, there just are not many outdoor options in the DIY realm.

Yea...I wasn't really thinking about DIY for the outdoor speakers.

Hey Everyone...

We are officially having our first licensed movie on July 4, 2013. I am starting the process of putting everything together for the movie. Here is the plan so far:

1. Coming Attractions (Shows trailers for upcoming movies we will be showing at our theater.)
2. DLP Intro
3. DTS Intro
4. Custom Dinner Theater Intro (Welcome to our theater blah blah blah)
5. Feature Presentation (Blast From the Past)

The company that we are licensed through allows you to use your own recording of whatever movie you are licensed to show. I figured I would just pick out three movie trailers and splice them together with the intros and feature presentation all into one media file. This way, I only need to click and play and everything happens seamlessly. While I admit that I am a novice when it comes to video editing, I thought I would give you an idea of my skill level by showing you a video I threw together for a friend's birthday a couple of years ago (he is a big Star Wars fan). The adaptation of the 20th Century Fox might even be sufficient for my needs, but I recall the process for making that portion of the video below was a bit of a pain in the ass (I actually had to use a display MAC computer at the Apple store to make it).

Anyway, due to how busy I am, I would much rather buy a custom "off the shelf" (oxymoron, I know) movie intro for #4 from above. I researched some basic options a couple of years ago, and a quick google search basically shows only those same options available. As I know many of you stay current on such things, I thought I would ask if any of you have a better idea, or a connection that can help me out. Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone is able to offer!

You do realize that for the size of the space, you may have one of the more capable theaters in the state, if not region! I can't think of a single theater that has true 20Hz capability.

I watched "Man of Steel" at a Cinemark XD theater in West Des Moines last night. It seemed pretty capable too haha. Then again, you said "one of the more capable theaters"...so I will agree with you ;-)

Here is the 2nd promo video that we posted to our facebook page at www.facebook.com/vanwijkwinery

I think we have accomplished our goal of creating an awesome venue for such things. Now is the hard part of getting people to know that it exists.

Petew, are you familiar with the "fair use docterine" as it applies to parodies of copywrited material?

See:

Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, 510 U.S. 569 (1994) [1] was a United States Supreme Court copyright law case that established that a commercial parody can qualify as fair use. That money is made does not make it impossible for a use to be fair; it is merely one of the components of a fair use analysis.

As my videos are parodies of the original source material, I should be covered...at least the United States Supreme Court says I am.

:-)

I think it would be really slick if you used all original content. The 21st century fox theater intro is really played out. That sounds negative I know, however I think those intros really aren't up to par with the quality of the venue itself. It deserves better.

I think an intro similar to IMAX's where it shows some technical aspects of the theater itself, such as the total watts, amount of subwoofers etc would be much better. I'm sure there are some highschool kids out there with AfterEffects knowledge who could do a slick looking intro for cheap, or free movie passes.

JonathanC...

We will eventually produce our own original content, but for now I think this works. You have to remember, I am still finishing building the deck, and have yet to finish sheetrocking the lower level where wine making operations will take place. We haven't even moved the wine making to the new winery yet. When I climb a couple steps on Maslow's ladder...then we will start to focus on such things as producing our own original content beyond what we have already done. Also, while YOU and members of the forum might look on videos like the 20th Century Fox parody as yesteryear, 90% of our target audience will have never seen it before and will think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread....IMHO.

Finally, if you look at post #553, you will see your exact suggestion has already been done. Please do not get me wrong - I am not taking your feedback in the wrong way. I do not believe you had malice intended...and I appreciate that you believe our venue is one that exudes quality. :-)

Click on the link below to see our Dinner Theater Promo #3. I uploaded it directly to facebook instead of youtube, and I am unsure how to embed a facebook video into this forum. But, if you just click on the link it should show you the video. Cheers!
