Anymore updates? hopefully good?

Been searching for mids again and keep thinking about this project. That and I have lots of scrap MDF laying around.

Spectacular directivity measurement. Examining the contour line that's adjacent to the (+)(-)40 degree point, that's simply mind blowing from ~200hz, all the way to ~13khz ... as I said, just spectacular!

I'm familiar with the inherent theoretical benefits, and even more importantly, I've heard BWaslo's DIY Synergys (CoSynes). Point source with CD pattern control, throw in the stunningly well executed polars ... bravo Paul. Cool stuff.

I dig your blog as well.

Thanks for sharing.

I can tell you I was happy with that! S2 had some beaming before loss of pattern control - a typical problem. The mouth flare was made larger to resolve that issue better, an approach that is based on Keele's CE horn.

I love the sound of this speaker. I've not had much time to listen, but when I had it running there was something about the sound that was "just right' about it. More recently I've come to the conclusion that one of the strengths inherent in Unity horns is that a very small midrange driver with a paper cone is used with a low crossover point. An issue that I think many DIYers tend to under-estimate is the influence of midrange cone breakup. Now if you take a small paper coned driver, the breakup will be pushed up and also fairly well damped, compared to a regular 6.5" passive two way where the breakup comes close to the crossover. Here we are pushing the problem away and also the bandpass drops the out of band output down 30 dB. Distortion and breakup issues are pushed further away. The result is that there is something inherently listenable about the sound.

When I disconnected these, I set up some Sonus Faber Cremonas in the same system/room. Even when playing to the strength of the Cremona, with moderate levels, it was a big step back in sound.

and how, that's an amazing sonogram

It looks like directivity is holding strong where at 200 Hz; is the measurement accurate this low, and if so any idea when the pattern broadens?

what are the overall dimensions again?

It will be ready when it's ready! Hopefully quite soon. I've done quite a bit I'm not showing and quite a bit since that prototype.

Noah,
The measurement is gated but the horn was elevated very high such that it would be valid at 200 Hz. The mouth is 900mm wide with 80 degrees and so the pattern control is actually mainted lower than expected. There is good reason for building multiple prototypes! Each one was an improvement. The compression driver I'm using for this (not the one you see in the picture) actually measures slightly better than B&C DE250. It doesn't have the knee at the top and it extends just that little bit more, up to 19k.
