Somehow I messed up the quote and it my question in it. So. My question is what is the benefit of the Apollo upgrade, especially pertaining to HT?

Ozzie,
Truthfully it probably won't amount to much for HT. John has an explanation of the Apollo option on the AE website. It adds a large amount of extra aluminum into the motor that is supposed to provide extra heat sinking and improve thermal transfer from the vc while lowering inductance even further. The former I believe ends up a little longer so the mms probably goes up just a hair.

I get asked the question over and over if the Apollo upgrade is worth the extra cost. In all honesty it is really not up to me to determine that. The TD woofers already have the full copper sleeve on the pole. This is something no other manufacturer does, and it has already drastically taken down the inductance, distortion, and helps pull heat off the coil. The Apollo upgrade then adds 2 giant shorting rings, almost 2lbs of aluminum to the motor structure. In any ordinary driver this would make a massive amount of difference in terms of lowering inductance, distortion, and heatsinking. From anything I have seen, the amount of aluminum used is at least 10x more than the amount of aluminum used for shorting rings in any other driver made anywhere. The coil is essentially surrounded by shorting rings on both the inside and outside. However, because this copper sleeve is so effective to begin with, you will not see a crazy extreme changes in inductance and distortion figures, although these changes are still measurable even at low volumes. As the driver is heated up though is where the biggest difference is seen. Having this massive heat sinking area on the outside of the coil greatly improves the power compression of the woofer. If you only plan to use them for home theater use at moderate volume levels, some people feel it is not a factor and choose not to spend the money on the upgrade. Others think of it as only a moderate increase in price to simply get the best possible option available. I would estimate that out of every 100 drivers, 25-30 of them are sold with the apollo upgrade.

That's a pretty decent amount, John. Certainly enough to keep it as an option. I know once I become a purchaser of your products that I will opt for the Apollo upgrade.

Doesn't placing the mid above the tweeter and the woofer below the tweeter cause C-C issues?

Even if the speakers were worth anywhere near that amount (and there is no reason to assume this), the room appears to be very poorly designed. Speakers costing less than 5 figures in a better room will most likely outperform it.

I got my invoice too! I hope I get some free time to start constructing my enclosure for the TD15s.

I wish I wasn't broke right now, though. The timing for this build is forcing me to go active on the crossover since I don't have funds for inductors etc.

Happy for you, man. Yep broke here too, I'll be listening in mono for a while with the $$ of coils and I might splurge on some capacitors. At least the drivers are coming and we can finally get some acoustic measurements. I still have wait for the pallet from Poland to get the waveguide cutout correct though. wink.gif

Were you mating those to the SEOS-15 or something else?

Nice to hear you guys got your shipping invoices:). Unfortunately, for me and others... I presume, are still waiting for their orders from Group Buy One to be filled. I still need the phase plugs for a pair of TD15M's. So when any of you receive your TD15's, you will have your phase plugs while I placed my order back in Nov. 2011.

I'm mentioning this here and now because if don't say anything I'll just be forgotten.

Oh, don't misunderstand -- the invoices we're referring to are from Group Buy 2011, just like yours. Robotbunny agreed to buy my group buy TD10s back in Sept or so when I told him they'd be ready any day now. :-D

Right-o, that's for Group Buy 2013 a.k.a. Chop's thread. Theoretically, us last GB 2k11'ers getting drivers invoiced means that they're ready to ship which means the first of the GB 2k13 folks (which I've also decided to participate in...) will start getting their drivers shipped sometime soonish too. Originally the expected ship date for the first of *those* orders was 3/11, but it's also been said that the 2013's will not start shipping until all the 2011's ship.

Correct. According to John, the 2011 buy woofers will be all shipped this week and we will ship immediately following. Could be end of this week, could be next week.

The first of the woofers are being packaged up tomorrow and the old group buy orders are now finished with a few awaiting packaging and final payment. Also, I posted a picture of the custom black phase plugs done for Chop on his woofers. I have had a lot of people asking if they could switch to the black phase plugs. Currently it will be 4-6 weeks before I can get more phase plugs in and get them processed through the anodizing facility. As a result I am not including the option for black phase plugs at this time.
