So, I've had my TC3000 15" for a few years now, totally love it, however I need more.. my living room is approx 15x30x9, also opens to hall and kitchen area, so there is a lot of room to fill up..

At present my system is configured as such:

Yamaha RX-V2700 (planning on getting the Aventage 2010 sometime soon here!).

Definitive Technology LCR and S (7004's for L/R, 2500 for C, 1.2x's for surround).

Sub pre out is running straight to my Crown XLS 602D, which is bridged mono to the TC3K wired for 8ohm. Sub is in a 3.5' sealed box.

I also, just ordered a miniDSP today, so will play around with that once it arrives and I have the time. yes, I have never had eq on the sub!

Here is what I was debating:

1). I'd like to not use up a ton of space for another 15". So I was thinking, a pair of 12"s, but I'm not sure this would be ideal. not to mention the cost of purchasing a pair of decent subs, but also cost and labor (time) of building two cabinets. I'm no Norm Abrams, but I can build. so isn't an issue there, more a time constraint thing, since my job has me traveling 90% of the month.

2). I also thought about getting one of the TC axis 15"s.. I havent looked, but I am assuming these are pretty close to matching the TS params on the TC3K I have, and hence would just be a matter of building one identicle cab to what I have now, which would take up a ton more room.

3). IB - would love to go this route, just not ideal for me at present.

Now, if I did consider the dual 12"s, I'm not even sure what drivers to look at, I love TC Sounds products, but I'm hesitant to spend over 400 bucks on a pair of axis 12"s, if a 15" axis is only 500 bucks, and would sound identicle to the TC3K I have....

RE amplifier power - the 602d is sort of a concern - its not supported for bridged 4ohm loads, nor 2ohm loads unbridged. so things can get tricky with another quad coil sub. I was debating a 1000w plate amp for this new "project" but still undecided..

thoughts? am I crazy? do I make any sense?

for a room that big, you might get a better effect with a ported design.

people frequently get carried away with maximizing extension, and sometimes in that pursuit, good loud bass above 20hz gets lost.

with a ported design, you could pick up 6-8 db in the 25-30hz region. that would make a big difference.

thats something I've considered as well.. I was thinking, try out a TC 12" Epic in a ported enclosure to see what I t hink of it.. if good, could easily do another
Plus, with my current amp, it'd be 600watts at 4ohm, which would be decent for that driver. Not sure on what the output would be like in the room and I have yet to model anything..

I guess I'm trying to find an excuse to build something.

how does the driver you have model I'm a ported box? maybe all you need is a remodel......

I'd have to agree with that much volume and only one sub, ported is your best bet.

Reviving my long dead thread...

Finally off the road, and have the time to work on a new project!

Been meaning to model the TC3K in a ported enclosure, but WinISD Alpha is blowing up on me. Need to resolve that to do some modeling. smile.gif

Still have the debate of a new box or dual 12"s though.

Either case, ported ported ported. LOL.

Have you considered building a duel opposed cabinet?

hrm. that I havent actually.

I'm kind of leaning on doing a ported 4.5ft3 ported to 18.. on a rough model I had last night before winisd choked on me, it looked pretty reasonable. would likely need a slotted port as well. I'll model it out again and post screenie of it. smile.gif

that driver and cab are fine together.

modeling isn't really going to show anything usable with a driver with an inductance that high. it will likely have a really large peak in the middle of the bass that will need some significant eq.
