My newly aquired sub was too wide to work where I needed it, so I rebuilt it to the same volume, just taller. I cut apart the 5749 cabinet to use the port and T nuts, etc. Now it should fit behind my AT screen and procenium. It will be powered by a QSC 4050HD.

Cool! I was wondering what you were going to do. Looking forward to what you think of them once you've mated them with your DTS-10.

Me too Scott! I also re-worked my equipment room to add the DCX and Peavy IPR3000. It will power the DTS and TD-18 (when it finally gets here).
I also swapped in an MRX300 instead of the Pio THX21.
I wish you lived close by so we could work the set up together.

Any progress on your project?

Yeah, me too. Most everyone around here is on the east coast or mid-west.

Yes! In fact, there has been a breakthrough wrt my mega mains. I've started work on the cabs and that's a sign that I should have them installed in the next month or two.

I can't wait to hear what you think of the JBL's and eventually a comparison of the JBL 18's versus the TD18.

Scott 's getting started soon. Yah!!

I have always heard some good things about the Anthem stuff. I still need to find myself a good AVR. But when spending $1400 on a simple Denon that only cost around 6-700 I just sucks I cant order one of these from the USA. I need to find a preamp that is has a universal PS under 1000 from the USA.

Then maybe I can build some of these Scott style monsters.

Set up a search on sleazepay for a step down isolation trans local to you. I picked up one a few months back for $2, rated 1kVA, full isolation (not autotransformer) and weighed 18kg so he wasn't going to ship. Preamps don't draw much power and even new a Tx shouldn't be that much.

Thanks. I have always seen cheap stuff in the USA but not here. But ordering stuff from the USA to work here makes things a lot cheaper.

Not always, check all your figures very closely and google around Oz sites for local prices especially for the bigger name stuff. I've been caught before and I used to trade instruments as a hobby, so lots of Oz experience importing and exporting. I was going to get my projector from the US, but the difference in price is minimal after some shopping around locally as an example. Not to mention warranty etc. Not always the case though.

Very few preamps offer much functional difference over an AVR, especially if you're using external amps, but preamps usually command a stiff premium.

Well...I realized I would have to do some re-construction behind the proscenium to fit the box, didn't realize just how much. The stage and proscenium weren't buit with 3 x 4622's in mind, much less 2 x 2242's and a DTS-10. Luckily for me, I had the 12" false wall where the previous IB was, so that made for another 1' of room. Like many, I started with "Hi-Fi" speakers...ha!

In the pics, you can see how I wrapped my 2384 horns with peel-n-seal. Can't hurt.

I also added the Mason Super W pads per THX, under each speaker. That's a pad on top of the speaker in the second pic.

Yes, it is all back together nicely. Mine aren't as purdy as yours, but they really are an amazing driver. The mid bass slam I have is over the top. I am awaiting my Mini-dsp to be able to properly intergrate them with the DTS-10.
I will then post some OM graphs.

Excellent! No reason to make them pretty when they are hidden behind the screen.

I tried War of the Worlds and The Lab scene from the movie Pulse. Wow, can these drivers move!! I was shocked actually.

What frequency did you tune the cabinet to? Have you tried comparing them to the DTS-10?

Nice!!

I have had my 2 for about 5 years. They are in 12 cu ft cabs tuned to 25hz.
Powered by 2 bridged HPA2's!! I really love mine!

I used the same volume as the 5749 (21 cu. ft. gross); taller instead of wider. I even used the actual port from the 5749 cab. It is tuned to 30 hz (+/- 3) http://www.jblproservice.com/pdf/The...eries/5749.pdf.

The DTS-10 definitely plays lower (which is no surprise), but the 2242's play with such visceral, chest pounding goodness. I have them running on different amps, so it's easy to compare. With the placement behind the screen I don't have the luxury of moving them.

My ultimate goal is to use the DTS from 15-50 and the 2242's from about (gotta measure to be sure) 35 up to the x-over. I also have to factor in my 6 x 2035's.
I'll also have another ported 18 (TD-18...if ever the GP ships) midway along the left wall in 12 cu. ft. I may just buy another 2242, they model nearly identical to the TD-18 anyway.
This should really smooth things out and require less amplifier, thus less distortion.

Coming back to this thread from 3 years ago. I guess I got my $450 out of the 5749 before I managed to lay waste to the 2422's (as well as my lone 2245). I thought I had the QSC-DSP30 configured correctly, but I don't think so, or just too much distorted power.

I have one TD18H+/4 ohm (it survived in the same size cab with the same power as the 2245). If I added another, would these be good replacements for the 2242's? The cab is basically a 5749 knock off. Exterior is 20 cu ft. Port is (ID) 15.5 x 7 x 16.5 long. I actually used the port in it's entirety from the donor 5749 cab. Any other drivers you might reco? I also have 2 of the older Mach 5-MJ18's laying around.

I looked at the AE site and John was recommending the TD18H+ sealed would be 5 cu ft w/ 700 wpch. I could convert the existing cab to 2x5 cu ft sealed cabs.

Amps include a QSC 4050 HD and Crown XLS5000. Thanks in advance!

Hey Scott-
I just re-read your thread, so cool!

The 6- 2035's are fine because of the pre-programmed DSi's. It's the sub's I broke (all three). When I push on the cone, I hear a definite scrubbing/rubbing noise. I have heard them "flap" a few times recently in heavy bass scenes. I have been using a B6 alignment with these. Ya' never know with used speakers. Maybe these were ridden hard eralier in life. The good news is I can't kill the DTS-10 or TD18H+, no matter how hard I crank the bass. Well, it was time for an upgrade anyway!

Did you have them protected with a very steep cut-off filter around 20-24 Hz?

It's funny reading this thread as I also have a DTS doing low bass and 2242's doing mid bass plus 2035's in the mains but it seems like the 2242's are indestructible and the DTS is more fragile.
Anyway, great system, what CD are you running on those 2384's?

I upgraded to the 2350SL (aquaplased phragms). Can't afford the Be right now.

I thought I had set up the DSP-30 for a B6 alignment (per JBL reco), but I won't rule out operator error.

Sorry to hear about your drivers. I've smoked my sub amp (defintely user error)but never a driver. Both are pretty drastic.

Anyone know if the TD18H+ is in stock with AE? I'm not waiting 2-3 months for one. I did e-mail them....

What about getting the 2242's reconed?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/jbl-2242-C8R...item2c96cf16b6

Here's an auction with supposedly genuine 2242 recone kits for 200 or best offer, still in box.
They seem legit, but 200 seems a bit pricey, maybe you could call JBL / a local retailer who is authorizd and see what they would run you.

Hey Greg-
Of course you are right my friend. They are quoting 6 weeks (which as we all know is best possible case). I love my existing td18H+ but no way can I wait that long. Too bad.

I am considering the EVX 180B drivers. Any thoughts?

BTW-I'm glad you got the networks! They were just sitting behind the cabs.

Wow! Almost $300 and from Isreal,,, I don't think so. I'm just not so enamoured with the 2242 any more even though it's probably my fault. OTOH- I have an MJ18 and the TD18 in a similar cab with the same power and they have survived. Hmmm....
