Wow... I just stumbled onto Troels' site. Looks like some beautiful high-end builds. In a search I only saw a few references on this forum to him and his designs. Anybody have any experience with any of his stuff to share?

Based on the drivers i saw, i expect putting his speaker kits together gets expensive pretty quick? I haven't finished looking through the site yet. Does anyone know if he has any center channel designs to pull off a L/C/R set? I've only seen pairs so far.

Always nice to accidentally find some amazing DIY stuff

No direct experience but a couple of observations:

center channel speaker - http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/8008CENTER.htm

see also http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/JA8008_DTQWT.htm
http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/QUATTRO.htm

There's a modest little system for ya Just add one of the approx. 2398476275467234 monster sub designs from this forum right here and you'll be set

- Troels seems to be a die hard 2-channel music guy, so his designs don't get as much attention on boards like this where a lot of the members are more focused on home theater

- Yeah his choices in drivers and crossover parts can seem spendy

- Some of the Jantzen stuff (the JA-8008 midwoofer and custom waveguide used in the above links, in particular) aren't available outside of Europe, and shipping elsewhere is expensive

- Agreed, some great looking designs there, and by all accounts great-sounding too

Thanks for the info and links.

I like the bevel work on the baffle of the center channel. Looks elegant. I suppose you could add something similar to another design. The 5deg upward baffle tilt is interesting too... probably helpful for below-screen placement.

That transmission line is a crazy build. Even with the detailed plans i was still a little confused. As you mention tho, putting together those speakers would be difficult/expensive/impossible in the US. Certainly over my budget. I'm going to do a little more searching on Troels' site, but i don't know if it will be practical for me to use any of his designs.

Troel's site is an entertaining read, lots of technical data and measurements. I've got a lot of construction and other ideas from him, but his designs in general don't appeal to me, ie, I doubt I'd ever build one as designed.
He has a penchant for using expensive drivers and especially expensive xover parts, some of which he sells under his own brand, Jantzen.

I was also going to suggest Tony Gee's site (humblehomemadehifi) but he's archived the DIY stuff and gone commercial too.

william cowan also has an interesting site. i'm more of a fan of his approach.

lots of fun reading and experiments. "steps to great sound" is probably my favorite.

Cool. Thanks for the teaser pics. you have a full build thread going? guess i should search, huh?

curious what other designs you considered before picking this one. are you in US or Europe?

how'd you get that crazy bevel on the extra baffle piece for the mid driver?

Have to admit, this is all my brothers doing. We were going to originally modify my old speakers (some refitted RTR 300d's with Dynaudio drivers), but rather than work with 20 year old drivers, he wanted to go with a current design with new drivers. I am going to see him tomarrow and will actually see the build for the first time.

I am in the US, Texas.

Troels actually registered here and posted once a couple of years ago, answered a question about tweaking tweeter levels.

Unfortunately a once-notorious troll (since banned) was quite rude and shat up the thread. Dunno if that why Troels has never been back, but regardless it's too bad he didn't choose to remain active here. Might have been quite an opportunity for some intelligent discussion with an experienced and respected designer.
