Do you guys know what the ideal dimensions would be for a dual opposed box for this driver?

Pretty small. Just large enough to physically fit them. I'm not sure what the total depth of the UXL-18 is.

I am going to get a quote for a finished cab where all one has to do is wire the driver to the binding post(from the inside) and then screw in the driver. Something like the xcelerator but basic finish. I am looking for a fellow AVSer, my bass is damn good now! If I ever blow the drivers I will replace them with LMSR 12's. About the same size and x-max.

That's pretty much what I am building for my RLp18's. A much uglier version of Patrick's XLerator subs. tongue.gif

What size is that cabinet, I remember reading that the UXL-18 can fit in the same size box as the LMS.

When I was messing with the dual opposed design, I think I originally said 40x20x20 but got it down to a 36x20x20 or so...........

dual opposed, I'd go 9-10 CF but you could go 8 and still be fine with a clone for power.

Finally figured out why half of my quads weren't playing.

F32oL.jpg

Took me quite a long time to figure out it was that....a few phone calls with Desertdome, a few swapping out of various cables....

p2i8Y.jpg

A few 9 Volt battery terminal tests (Yep, all the drivers moved out toward the room.......)

0rzJX.jpg

And finally before I was about to say screw it and order another FP14k and get rid of the junction box.....

eyAji.jpg

Found the culprit.

Back to having the Defibrillators @ full strength. I wonder if Parts Express will just ship me a replacement.

Desertdome came over and ran some EQ last night. I also got a lesson on how to use J River a bit better which was helpful.

I was able to overlay a few measurements from the past year with the subs in near identical (inches) positioning. Some from our October 2011 Subfest are overlayed with my current UXL setup to compare.

I was trying to get all of the measurements unsmoothed but some were stuck on 1/48th from a file I had to import from a different computer.

I think I have the measurements labeled correctly but yell at me if something looks off.

We could have done some more tweaking last night but we were in a hurry. Sorry for the delay in measurements.

Yeah, I know I have some more REW files somewhere but my Dell laptop doesn't seem to want to find them for me. I'm glad I found what I could. It is interesting seeing it all.

They sound fantastic to me. We are bypassing the AVR currently with J River handling everything. This lets me use my iphone iremote for jriver app to run everything as a remote, volume, media selection and all. That is cool.

The only issue with this is I can't use my heights unless I turn Audyssey back on.

Audyssey was really dropping the response below 16hz as you can see. Just watched Avengers and it is rockin'! No upgraditis here. I also somehow got rid of a can light resonance when I painted the ceiling and spray painted the can lights. biggrin.gif

Awesome! Congrats! Nice response.

How does it sound compared to the CHT's? What's the main difference? SQ? ULF?

Sorry for leaving those offset boxes on the pictures. Desertdome is scolding me via email and pm. He is kind of picky with his chart readings. If he keeps it up I may put his cell # on here so you can all text him and cost him $0.25 per text - join the 21st century DD!

Compared to the CHTs? Sheer output and power on tap to go low. I'm not worried about reaching any limits with these and encountering distortion. Better eq'able response below 20.

They sound great.

These fit nicely across my front stage. I'm just in the beginning evaluation stages now that we have the bottom end flat to 5hz-Im interested to see what people think in two weekends.

While we were measuring we tried desertdome's mic instead of my ECM8000. I forget what he has but it is much flatter than mine. We did however forget to delete the cal file that was still active for my mic in REW.

Will try and re-post a fixed calibration late tonight if we can get it done since the below 10hz is going to be wrong per the prior charts.
The 5hz difference is nearing 15 db, so we need to tweak the EQ a tad.

I'll even try and make them prettier with only the UXL info and @ 110db with 5db resolution or lower. Would that make nube happy? wink.gif

So basically, nearly identical response between dual CHTs and quad UXLs to 10hz?

James

Actual phone call (see pic to left):

Tech (responding to laughter): "I'm sorry sir, did I miss something?"

Me: "Yeah, a case of Diet Mountain Dew walking across my living room."

I suppose basically.

I need to post our rerun graphs-eq'd drivers to cabs then eq'd to room. J River was being funny and wouldn't let us have over X number of filters though....

The CHT graph was run at ~70 db. The UXL graph was run ~ 80db. It was 11pm so I didn't want to go higher at risk of getting divorced re: UXL graphs.

I'll try and run it around 110db soon.

Point being, I don't think the CHT setup would have kept its response below 20hz as I would expect the UXL will when I rerun it-I could be wrong.
Not enough power on hand and output on hand in my room to accomplish that in reality.

What do others think?

Any sealed system will have a nearly identical response in HuskerOmaha's room if they are EQ'd. Maximum output capability is another story.

I think you should have bought JTR subwoofers after the KC blind test and been enjoying them over this last year instead of getting so frustrated with the DIY side that you've threatened to leave the hobby. ;p

The JTRs once again were fantastic in the recent PA meet that I'm flying back from this very moment. Check out that thread in a couple days for details.

Both Mark and Jeff made on the site sales I believe...The LMS-5400 pair was crippled one way or another in the movie section...

I don't regret my cap pair purchase and my hobby time has been uninterrupted with frustration and drama. ;p

I'm looking forward to teasing you in person next weekend at the Omaha meet!

Guys, you can not compare a 34mm of x-max driver to a 19mm of x-max. A fair comparison would be your dual 18.1's vs a single uxl-18. Anyways, 4 uxl-18's rock and look awesome!

Hey Arch,

I scanned the prelims of the G2G. Sounds so far like a 'which one is the loudest' contest to me.

The bitterness of inadequate low end capability remains long after the frustration of building a system like Husker's is forgotten.

Bosso

Like MKT said, there's no comparison, so trying to make one vs the CHT stuff or dual Caps would just be opening oneself up to a bit of ribbing.

Husker,

Good to see you finally got through the test mishap and delivery problems. I appreciate your being one of the guys to go first with a new driver, sending it to Josh, suffering through the Speakon learning curve, purchasing a clone, etc., and documenting it all. I look forward to reading more as you have fun experimenting and acclimating.

Big tip o the hat to Desertdome. It's a huge asset to have a friend with the hardware, knowledge and willingness to spend his spare time with the dialing-in process and presenting the data here for us all to benefit from.

As I've said for a long time, with a system like yours you can emulate any other subwoofer at will as well as dial in a subwoofer that's in a rare class that none of those others can hope to be. The jealous/insane folk may soon chide you for talking about full bandwidth true reference capability. It's been most fun having so many who can't tell me why I shouldn't. In the end, you have it, either way. I've never understood how that ever could be viewed as a bad thing much less in any undesirable.

I know the JTR and Seaton products are high class, and if I didn't have the 'want to' I could have just purchased those. Sometimes I have wished I've had.
Running through the demo stuff for the HT tour I'm sitting here grinning from ear to ear. The setup does sound great. I may have to work on 1 of the 4 drivers, but I don't plan on running the subs 10 db hot and at reference so I'll have to decide if I need to look at that further or not.

Playing stuff at +8 over reference? (with regards to the recent GTG) Are you kidding me? When I play at reference I'm done after 10-15 minutes. After sitting in a room getting pounded by sound for 10 hours sometimes I want to agree with auditor55 and go get my body genetically screened to see what is happening. rolleyes.gif Desertdome has been key to my persisting on the path, since he comes over and saves me by measuring and EQ'n when I'm at wits end. It also prevents me from totally diving into the EQ and HTPC software stuff and spending time on other hobbies, because he is so dang reliable. Thanks to you and notnyt as well as others with all the advice on the parts....couldn't do it without everyone chipping in.

As is with all hobbies, getting there is a big part of the experience and fun.

I need to post our re-measurement data. Back to prepping for this HT tour.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I am hoping Husker or Dome can help me out here. I've had 4 UXL's and 1 FP14K clone amp for awhile now and am finally getting around to hooking it up. I am curious what Husker decided on for the hookup (4ohm bridged or 8ohm stereo?) Part of me keeps nudging towards 4ohm bridged but I've read a lot of horror stories in the forums about the clones popping in this config but it seems such a waste to wire these subs in 8ohms.

Thanks for any help.

He is running in 8 ohm stereo. If you look at post #438 you can see the box he made to connect two subs in series to one output.
