So I am getting transferred from Delaware to Massachusetts and luckily enough the guy who is buying my house is buying it with my home theater. The sad part is that my dual opposed mfw subs are included
In the deal. For my new system I was planning on starting with a PN59D8000 Samsung Plasma to replace my UN55C8000 Samsung LED. For speakers I was gonna go with paradigm monitor 9's or 11's and cc-290 or cc-390 to replace my Focal/JM Labs Sib XL's. I am going to try and find some used/demo version 6's on audiogon or maybe even find some leftover demos in a shop around my new home. A simple denon, onkyo or integra receiver with a minimum of 7 channels, multeq xt and the highest amount of wattage possible without breaking the bank to replace my Integra 40.2. Hopefully I can find that on audiogon as well.

Now to my main question and most important...what subs to build? Seems like everything out there is kinda boring and I would like to try something different than the dual opposed mfw's and hopefully come up with something new but thats not going so well. The RS390-HF's seem kinda boring and so do the Titanics.

Any ideas because the best possible scenario I can come up with is RS390-HF's in a twin dual opposed setup with an EP4000 and minidsp to tweak the FR and add a little to the sub 20hz area. This at least gives you guys an idea of my budget.

The exciting thing about all of this is that i'm basically getting a second chance to design my system all over again. I get to fix the mistakes I made, upgrade to the current models and luckily I won't be losing much of what I had spent the first go around.

Thanks guys!

once spec'ing a system gets boring, that is a sign that you are getting good at spec'ing systems. :-)

I know for a fact that I want to go with sealed and just for the simple fact that I will be downsizing from a house to an apartment and won't need the increased output of a ported sub. I also prefer sealed over ported so I can get that extra extension (sub 20hz). Currently in my living room I am able to get to 7hz relatively flat with my two dual opposed and a single 3cf mfw in the rear of the room. Im not trying to out-do what I have now but I would like to come up with something cool that sounds decent with my new speakers.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see the draw with the Dayton HF series. If you need 4.5 cu per driver why not step up to an 18 at that point. The displacement is a fraction of a long throw 18 comparatively.
In fact you get similar displacement at a lower cost, and a quarter of the box size from the Alpine SWR 12.
If you're bored with 'normal' options look at the new Obsidian 15, or the new Sundown HT drivers. Both have low Le and introductory pricing. Price and # wise they look like budget leaders. Similar displacement to the SSD with lower inductance.

wait, an apartment? how are you going to keep the sound from travelling throughout the complex?

maybe what you want is a dodecasub or something similar with a cardioid radiation pattern. that way you can get some good bass at your lp while naturally cancelling bass in almost all other directions.

I'm not worried about the apartment issue...my gf isn't into loud noises so at night when I watch with her I will keep it down. I use auralex grammas and I know how to be respectful. I won't always be in the apartment so I at least want to build something that will full any room up to 5000cf.
