The one Ricci tested is mine, if it behaves similar to the B&C they both will be available

ZV3 18D1 outdoor 2m groundplane response...Some roll off but not as bad as indicated by the close mic test. -6dB down at 100Hz and -8.5dB at 200Hz. The rest of the test data will be on DB in a few days.

Quite good response for a driver of this heft. She'll soak up gobs of power, and a pretty great $:Vd too. Solid contender.

Over some emails, Jacob mentioned when ordering the dustcap can be ordered without logo and be modified for performance in HT.

Any suggestions?

I've make some pings over to my connection over there. I'd like to see a softer suspension, possibly removing extra spiders to get the compliance down. The overall driver needs little modification for HT use other than that, imo.

I haven't heard much lately but I hear that there are motions....

That's all I can say.

I'm hoping for a spider tweak to lower Fs and Qes.

I'm glad this thread popped up again. I have REW sweeps taken yesterday of the 21LW1400 and Zv3 in both of my big ported cabs.

The 21LW1400 is RULER flat. Super impressive. The B&C responded exactly as modeled. The Z didn't like the cabs as much. The SoloX, well it was pretty bad.

I'm also going to build a sealed prototype for the Z, and maybe try one with the 21lw1400. I have a sealed box for the SoloX now as well.

More measurements forthcoming. I'll post what I gathered yesterday later on this evening.

So, softer suspension.....lower Fs.....lower Qes. This will allow the driver to do what better?

Need some education

That B&C and 18sound 21's have been turning some heads lately.

It would allow for some extra sensitivity down low. Honestly, I think it works fine as-is for HT but it would require some extra attention (signal shaping) and possibly a larger box than some drivers like the LMS-U that have been more popular for their ability to fit in a shoebox.

Both of the pro drivers are robust beasts of bass makers, fo sho.

I have made the mistake of building alot of something trusting that it will do what it says, now I build one or 2 and find their limits to assess their value. The SoloX in the ported cabinet is the best performing single cabinet so far.

I wonder if the Sundown might be a good driver for tapped horn, considering the highish fs and extreme excursion. The problem with a 20 Hz FLH is that often you see excursion controlled only to about 25 Hz. It will handle itself better than a TH for sub 20 Hz content without a HPF, but if you compare a TH of the same size, you will likely see the TH controls excursion all the way down to 20 Hz. So if you are happy with that being near the limit of extension, then you put a HPF around 20 Hz and end up with more output, you might get in-room to about 15 Hz with some gain and you are using excursion more efficiently. The FLH will be limited by the loss of excursion control below 25 Hz, so for max SPL you will have to put your HPF around there. Another pest about FLH is that it's generally very difficult to monitor excursion because the driver is buried. With a TH you can test your setup and check the driver is protected.

If you really want to move some serious air, I'm thinking a tapped horn with dual opposed 18" subs like this. The format I used in my T20 works nicely and due to using light formply (cheap) and dual opposed mounting the thing doesn't vibrate and two people can lift it without issue. For my first use I managed to get it from workshop to cinema room on my own. Probably not so easy for a bigger version with 18" drivers. And if one isn't enough, then what about four?! I'm thinking of a name for this beast ...... how about ........ the LEVITATOR?

A TH is in the works, and I'm going to prototype and measure a sealed alignment this week.
