How come I rarely see DIY speakers being sold in the used market?

The used market is the only reason I don't go DIY...because I can find great deals on used stuff. Makes me think I could find great deals on used DIY stuff...but nobody seems to sell their stuff. Why is this? THe speakers are too close to your hearts?

If I had something worth selling so far, I would. Often times the same cabs are used over for new projects, or parts of a previous build are reused such as the compression driver or woofer. I have a boat load of parts laying around I could sell, but no complete kits atm. That could and should change as I move forward though, but is more likely the situation with most the folks around here.

You can build a bunch before you run out of places to put them. Many DIY types have have very nice speakers in the garage system. I suspect most "extras" are given away to friends/family. Others are recycled with the drivers going into another project.

Passing Interest could get more for his DIY stuff than the name brand companies would...

There are several levels of DIY. It ranges from stuff made so poorly that no one would buy it to stuff like PI makes that 99% of the high end companies out there can't touch. It would be hard to put a value on most of it. Not only that, but most of us think our DIY's are worth more than comparable retails. It wouldn't be sold for cost of materials alone...

I'm just about at the point where i will have more speakers than i can use. One of my buddies said he liked my Zaph mains, so maybe i'll give him a deal on those so i can start on some Statements

Pretty much everything i build has flaws in it - i would feel kind of bad selling them for a lot of $ because of such issues, but at the same time would feel bad parting with them for cheap after i spent soooooo much time producing them. For better builders than myself there may be other issues.

Other then my mal-x 18's that I sold the 3 days ago to a guy at my work, I give all my built stuff away to friends when I go for something new. So far, I've given away 28 subs and counting..... I just finished 2 dual opposed dayton 15" DVC's for my sister and 2 3cf boxes to with titanics to my friend who just got back from Afghanistan. I'm currently taking apart my IB (4 IXL 18's) and making 2 big ported boxes for a good friend and my other sister. I just like making subs!
My next project is going to be a paradigm sub 2 clone with 6 dayton DVC 15's and 2 more boxes for 2 more FTW 21's The only thing I usually don't give away is amps, I'll give the drivers and boxes and my time but they have to buy the amp.

like the guys say, dIY stuff is hard to sell, most people just don't understand DIY to begin with, so I just give it away or possible re-use the drivers for something else.

Man, that sub 2 clone sounds awesome!!! I actually envisioned the same design, but with 6 Ultras. Like a 900lb+ beast!

N8DOGG you seem pretty experienced in these things. How you ever put a built-in powered sub into a ceiling? I'm a little nervous about this one. Maybe you can talk some sense into me.

shipping DIY speakers would be insane expensive. My DIY MFW clone is an entire sheet of 3/4"MDF. Not to mention the driver.

I am currently building some Zaph 2.5MMTMM ... they will be very heavy and big as well. Maybe look on local craigslist.

While I would sell my DIY I would only do it so I could fund a new project! I just started building these projects and a lot of time is invested. A LOT!!!!

No but I do know someone who has. He made a box and attached it between the roof joists and just dry walled over it. He actually had 2. It didn't sound the best because his seating area was in a huge null and, well your kind stuck lol. Unless you can get a sub up there and see what it would sound like at your seating position, it's a total crap shoot and chances are, you'll bet red and it will be black

can you do an IB?

I still have quite a love affair with my Dayton WTMW centers as LCR w/ Curt Campbell XO's. I almost replaced them with Pi fours. One of our members took full advantage of my bailing out of that project.

I sold all four of my Mach 5 Audio MJ-18 subwoofers. Had them listed on craigslist for about a year and within a month of each other, I sold all four to three different buyers (when it rains, it pours I guess).

I also sold a folded horn with a pair of JBL 10" drivers in it to a friend. He still uses it everyday and loves it.

Luckily I have managed to break even with what I put into them (not including labor costs of course).

If common sense prevailed a little more then there probably would be a lot more DIY speakers getting sold. I think there are many who aren't willing to pay much for a DIY speaker, and many expect to be able to buy a DIY speaker for less than the cost of the parts.

I built some nice TL speakers many years ago with an exotic rosewood veneer. They cost around $1100 to build and they had curves on the sides and top. $5k would be a typical price for a commercial box that is just a box, but it took me about a year to sell them for less than the cost of the parts, $900 in the end. The guy who bought them in the end was over the moon about them.

Three common reasons IMO:
1) because all their DIY stuff is still being actively used
2) because it is the first and only thing they ever have, or ever will, or ever need to build
3) because it is more expensive to ship it somewhere than to build it; and insufficient market demand

-my 2 cents

^^^^ shipping is a killer without an account with discounts...

I have a good friend who is a cabinet maker, we have thrown around the idea of a ID sub build house.... When you start to throw around the numbers... I dont know how the hell they do it

I hope this does not go against any forum rules, or is too far OT.

If anyone in is interested I'll have some of my diy designs in a garage sale along with some enclosure concepts and drivers, plenty of other stuff as well. This week 8am-3pm Thur-Sat. I'll be gone on friday after noon though so if you arrive during that time and have questions I won't be there to answer them.

It's in Millbrook a very small town ~50-60mi W/SW of Chicago, PM me if your interested and want an address (not that you will need it Millbrook is that small a town).

You could even stop by just to have a listen. On Sat Millbrook has It's Spring Fling so there will be some other things to do in the town as well: http://village.millbrook.il.us/spring-fling
