Thanks for the right up Gorilla83, you have inspired me to do the same and build a dual opposed sub as my first DIY project.
Not too long ago, my sub died (Jamo S550) and I tried rebuilding it and discovered that the plate amp is overheating and probably stuffed. It is getting so hot it is un-soldering the speaker wire from the driver...sigh. Originally I was looking to purchase the SVS SB13-ULTRA ($2499AUD) as a replacement, but then discovered the DIY forum and your thread...
I decided to pull the trigger on 2 x Dayton Audio RSS460HO-4 18" Reference HO Subwoofers (4 ohm). I was looking at the Stereo Integrity HT18 4ohms, but they would really start putting me into the big leagues $ wise. I am hoping this sub will cost around the same once I add an amp, but compete well SQ and DB wise... exciting times...
Now I'm researching which amp to buy. It looks like two on the short list for sub duty with dsp are:
- Behringer INUKE NU6000DSP ($889AUD), or
- Crown XLS2500 2 Channel Digital Power Amplifier 2400watt Amp ($1015AUD)
I guess the trade off is:
a) less quality with excess wattage for future, or
b) quality with wattage for right now and add more amps in the future
Thanks again for the detailed write up, it really is most appreciated!
