72 Hours. ~$1200. Lotta Fantastic New Bass for the Living Room!!!

Yep, I did it. After a building a single I couldn't resist the allure of the knockout value of the Dayton 18" HO.

So four of them, then.

Pretty straightforward build: 39" x 22" x 20"...around 7.75 ^3. Snugly braced, double front baffle...160lbs at the end of the day. Heavy but not unmanageable. Pushed by a Crown xls 2500...1200/2000 peak watts per cab. Sure they may take a bit more, but I don't need the db's, trust me.

Constructed (added cross braces a few hours later):

Big to Kalli:

Tower of Power:

Much more waf-friendly...if there is such a thing with these massive cubes...

They turned out very sharp in my humble opinion. I simply don't think you can touch the bang for buck.

Prolly add a couple more for my eventual, larger, dedicated space, if the prices stay in the neighborhood.

Hope everyone had a safe and happy Turkey Day/week.

James

Wow, Nicely done!! How big is the room they're playing in? I'm guessing they pressurize the room more than adequately :-)

Thanks guys...room's about 2500 cubes. Yeah the output is stupid if you want it to be. I seriously considered grabbing four Ultras at the last second but I could never justify nearly quadrupling the "budget" for a scant few db's I don't need in the first place. I'm very happy with my decision.

LOL!

Awesome job! Man these subs are serious. I just checked the stats at data bass. If I didn't just build two horns I would jump on these.

Looks great, James! Welcome to the quad dayton 18 crew. biggrin.gif

What do you think of them vs. the Captivator? They must be crazy in your room.

Nice man, love that look of being able to see both drivers. I understand the benefits of dual opposed, but I'm not crazy about the looks. Well done, looking forward to more pics.

Awesome mastermaybe! They look fantastic, they look just as or better than many commercial subs! How do you like them compared to your Cap. These were even cheaper than the single cap.

Thanks again, all. It's nice to see what you can crank out in just a few days.

My first solo was a sealed 3.75 HO. Sounded so good I knew the Caps days were numbered, so to speak. The Captivator is an amazing sub, but at $1500 for a second passive vs $1000 for a quad of these, it was a bit of a no brainier.

I really pushed them through the gauntlet yesterday nigh- tons of punishing movie clips and music- and they performed excellent, even at 5db hot in the LFE they sailed through reference level playback. Very clean and measured, hard to imagine ever needing more output but we'll have to see how the future room works out. tongue.gifwink.gifbiggrin.gif

Man I love seeing all these quad HO builds pop up. That is almost exactly what my build is going end up like; you even have the exact same shop vac lol.

I have a slightly smaller room so I'm really glad to hear the output is up to the task. I'm hoping these will sail past my PB12/2 Ultra without even breaking a sweat. smile.gif

This seems like the final evolutionary for us HT nuts. IMO, DIY really separates the casual from the serious hobbiest, at least in most regards.

Yeah this might be awhile for me. Every time I try to pull the trigger on a good mic I get cold feet at the thought as I know I just won't be using it next to ever.

Used or a black monday deal is always on the table though!

Hehe, you are getting very very sleepy, you are dreaming of your first shop saw............tick tock.

On another note, came home with four tubes of pl and a box of nitrile gloves the other day. 4 sheets of ply already sitting in my garage. What will I do? heh...

starting with 4 HO's to add to my two RE's. That should get me going pretty good... quite a bit of displacement.

That setup looks great! Could you tell me how the cabs were finished? Primer, paint, spray/brushed/rolled, etc? I'm hoping for something similar on my build.

Get yourself a quality no-nap sooth roller and a quality enamel...I went with behr (yes, behr) ultra premium as I've found it to be one if the finest around:

The "trick" is taking the time and effort to get your cabs smooth and uniform...the above is quite forgiving but it's not a miracle worker...I can understand why so many go for duratex...not knocking them (or it) but it can work out much better for less "finished" builds.

This stuff is 90% patience, 5% attention to detail, and 5% "talent" IMO, just about anyone can create a great result if one and two are minded.

Good luck,

James
