Ok so now that we have two new budget priced 18" drivers that perform well, how would one of these sealed with 750-1000 watts stack up against a F20 or THT?

Had to ask

the f20 will slaughter them both. more than 10db higher spl at 25hz and about 6db higher in the upper bass.

the f20 is a big horn though and isn't going to do too well as you get much under 20hz or so.

if you have the money, go for the sealed.

if you are on a slim budget and can cut wood, go for the f20.

Listen. It's All Good.

Well I have two THTLP's now that are waiting for me to finish the basement, but my placement options are not turning out as well as I had hoped. They will end up in the front corners so I guess it's not too bad.

I think I will get some better measuring equipment first and go from there. Your right. I would need a lot of 18's to match the output of the horns from 20 on up.

Yes it would indeed take several of the 18" inch drivers (sealed) to match an F-20 in terms of output, but, the sealed 18 inch drivers will likely go lower than the F-20, assuming that they have plenty of power, right? Of course, in terms of output, it would be hard to beat the F-20. With that being said, there are a lot of folks out there, who, like me, prefer to have a deeper responce that gobs of output. I will say that I have not heard an F-20 in my room, so I may very well love an F-20, perhaps even more so that the sealed 18's that I am building. Heck, I may even build an F-20 anyway since I already have the MFW-15 driver and a spare Yung 300 watt plate amp. I personally think the F-20 design by lil-mike is an awesome design, plus it is super easy to build, especially with the way he has laid everything out. I am looking forward to being in bass heaven soon!

Was the F20 measured at 1 or 2 meters? I didn't see it in my limited search. If measured at 1m, both systems appear to be fairly close since the Dayton was measured at 2m. I'm seeing the F20 does 115db @ 25hz and 115-120db in the upper bass and the Dayton has max long term output at 108.5db @ 25hz and 2m (114.5db at 1m) and 112db in the upper bass (118 at 1m). The SI is a couple db higher than the Dayton also.

I won't speak for the F-20, but my signature build will put about 2dB in most of its passband (more up high) on top of a vented Mach 5 IXL 18" tuned to the same 16Hz within Xmax with about 1/3rd of the power required.

Just in case you're looking for another alternative wink.gif

1kW would power four of them to ridiculous levels.

^All this. To get that kind of output with the Dayton RSS460HO 18", you'd need four. A single F-20 for 20Hz and up and four sealed RSS460HO 18" for 20Hz and down. That would be friggin sweet for right around $1K provided you've got the amp and materials. I've got the itch....baaad.

Heck yes, man. I've got two MFW-15 drivers sealed now powered by an iNuke 1000DSP. They work really well, but not much headroom. F-20 with a driver to spare. wink.gif

I have 2 MFW-15's dual opposed and a mal-x. Plenty of output IMO.

Builds: Maelstrom 21 Ottoman Build, Dual Opposed MFW's x 2, Statements, SEOS-12/TD12M x 5.

I hear ya guys, not complaining about them at all. Wish I had four like you petew, they're the best subs I've ever had for sure. I've just always wanted to build a F-20 for the upper bass output. When I got out the measureing tape the other night, my wife says "it never ends, does it?" She bought me a pair of AE TD10M's for xmas too. smile.gif

Is there any reason for this though? From what I have been able to figure out, when that thought crossed my mind was that anything that can do below 20 can do above 20 even better.

Hmm, good point. I wonder about what the THD% is and spl for dual our quad sealed 18's. The F-20 has high distortion @ 15hz, so I was thinking more in those regards...clean low frequencies to supplement an F-20. Perhaps the F-20 wouldn't be needed for quads, but I've already got the drivers and materials...itching to build something to play around with. smile.gif
