Can I power four of the Dayton HO 18's off one ep4000? At least till I can get another ep4000?

Sure can but they'll be under powered at stereo 2 ohm for 625w ea.

Later with an amp per pair at 8 ohm they'll each see 875w ea. Still a little under powered for what they are.

Or you could buy one Marathon 5050 and do
RMS Power Rating
2 ohms: 2500 watts x 2 chan to run all four
or
Bridged @ 4 ohms: 5000 watts x 1 chan.to run all four

"I should really see what dB levels I'm pushing. Long as it can't foam my beer during a movie we are ok "

So then I could build two dual opposed subs. Use biamp binding posts. and power them with one ep4000? Then get another ep4000. Remove the binding post bridge, and use one ep4000 for each box right?

I just don't have the cash for a cv5000 or even both ep4000 at once at the moment.

The EP4000 will do it for sure, they will be receiving around ~450-500 watts each. Realistically that amp will do a solid 950-1000 per channel at 2 ohms which would mean per two drivers. That is fine to get started, especially for the 275 selling price. The Marathan/CV/Crown will do 2000-2500 watts per, so you're looking at a 3-4 DB gain which is decent, but the cost will be 700ish.

"The Marathan/CV/Crown will do 2000-2500 watts per..."

just to clarify. that is 2000-2500 watts per channel into 2 ohms. dual ho's per channel would net 1000-1250 per driver which is pretty much as high as you want to go in 4 cubic foot sealed enclosures per driver.

"So then I could build two dual opposed subs. Use biamp binding posts. and power them with one ep4000?"

yes. wiring the drivers in parallel would net 2 ohms per enclosure. no need for bridging, just hook one dual opposed enclosure to each channel. that will give about 450-500 watts per driver.

---

if you get a second ep, then you will have one driver on each channel of each amp at 4 ohms. iirc, that would get you around 650 watts per driver.

the reason the Marathan/CV/Crown works a little better is that it puts out 2000-2500 watts per channel at 2 ohms, so it is a better match for the drivers.

but, 450-500 watts per driver into 4 18" ho's isn't like a beginner system. depending on how large your room is, you might hit full reference all the way down. and with a little room gain, 130db in the music range isn't out of the question.

doubling power at that point might pick up 2-3db, just for perspective.

Listen. It's All Good.

Very interesting. Obviously Gorillas build is my inspiration here.

My other option is to use the SI drivers with a inuke 6000 but I'm like you guys. They aren't available yet. No guarantee when. And PE has great customer service should I have any problems.

Ok. I snagged a ep4000 from amazon for 275 shipped!

It's on!

I'm going to use 3/4 Baltic birch at least for the outside since im going to stain it. Gorilla, did you use normal 3/4 plywood for the whole thing?

I'll use Gorillas box dimensions for the interior size and ill use the same bracing. The panels will be assembled a little differently so they match my other speakers. Crites cornscalas and CS-1t's.

I used basic 23/32 'cabinet grade' ply which was available locally. The exterior turned out pretty smooth after preparation, but I covered them in Duratex so buying a top grade wood wasn't a huge concern for me anyway. If you're going to be staining I would go Baltic Birch for sure.

I didn't expect so many Dayton 18 projects to pop up after my build. It's kind of awesome to see so many new builds kicking off!

well its a great driver option, but also, your thread is very informative. It has lots of data, back and forth discussion from knowledgeable people, and of course the total overkill doesnt hurt either lol.

i think thats why its so popular.

Do these ep4000's need their own 15amp breaker?! I was hoping to put two on one 20 amp at the worst.

im looking at your cutsheet Gorilla and trying to cut costs a bit. I think i will cut the outer baffles, tops and sides out of baltic birch, and the rest out of the cheaper 3/4 stuff. i will make little 2" risers for them out of pine.

idea is to match these:

Well if memory serves me correctly, you are supposed to only load a breaker to 80% of it's capacity. So to meet specs that would be 16 amp or 1920 watts. Each 2500 will put out that on their own. That being said, I don't see too many instance where you will be asking for full load out of your amps.

As mentioned elsewhere; power supply is the biggest bottleneck in amplifier performance. While they would do fine on one breaker, they would do better with 2.

When I ran my EP4K with my Captivators, I did so on a shared 15A circuit with my TV, receiver, blu ray, etc haha. I had never tripped a breaker than I can recall. I'd think 2 on a 20A circuit would be OK as the breaker can pass bursts many times it's rating for a second or two, which is the typical demand of an amplifier for home usage. With that said, if you've got extra circuit capacity, might as well use it.

I think there's a difference between will it trip a breaker, and will it be the best scenario. It doesn't do any good to purchase an amp to meet the wattage needs, only to starve it.

If you can run another circuit, do it. In fact run 2. smile.gif I am just finishing up another HT build, and I learned from my mistake of not running enough juice the first go around. I now have 3 dedicated circuits for the component rack alone, and another two for the lighting.

I went ahead and ordered a second ep4k. At $275 shipped, why wait? Then I won't have to rewire the drivers later. I'll just wire each box up as 8 ohms. I think that should be a potent package. I'm now going to change the thread title.

wow, I didn't realize that Dayton HAD an 18 inch HO.... performance wise how much of a boost would you get over the 15 HO or the 15 Titanic??? was thinking that a pair of ported with this driver would do nicely....

"Anyone familiar with the QSC RMX2450 amp?"

search google images for rmx2450 and ep2500 (same guts as ep4000). there are some comparison photos showing the larger transformer in the rmx2450. otherwise, i believe they are rated the same.

Brian6751 isn't the only person inspired by Gorilla83 to build some duel Dayton HO18's! I am getting ready to build a pair myself, just not sure if I want to build a pair of dual opposed cabs or 4 single cabs.

Question to Brian6751, why are you using these wired into an 8ohm load? Wouldn't you be getting more power to them by wiring for a 4 ohm load?

Correct. Additionally, you could hook up each single Dayton HO18 per channel since it sounds like you're getting two Behringers now.
