Well, your boy needs to give us a budget. Any other info on your room size, current equipment, and sound preferences/expectations would also help.

You would make boy # 5 for me. As I would do for any one of my own sons -- if they wanted the best possible option for performance, quality of kit, and ease of construction -- this is where I would point them: http://www.diysoundgroup.com/

This awesome site is the brainchild of our very own Erich H from this forum. Specifically, look at the Waveguide Speaker Kits for LCR/Surround and the flat-pack subwoofer kits (the 4.5 cu.ft. box would readily accept one of the Stereo Integrity or Dayton 18" drivers that are so popular on the forum these days).

7.2 for 1k sounds tough. If you stick with 7.1 you have some doable diy options. If you don't mind huge, stentorians with an f20 would be in your budget not including a receiver. That would get you basically no distortion at high levels. If you want "high end" you will need to spend more on the speakers. If you don't have the space, you can build half decent bookshelves and an 18" dayton HO or cheaper with a lilmike t-6 (if you don't mind sacrificing the lower 20's hz).

I guess the question is how much space can the speakers take up and how ugly can they be? Luckily my gf doesn't care about space and ugly, as long as they sound bada**

Yeah, you're not gonna be able to do a nice complete 7.2 set for $1k. You might just want to consider a new LCR and a sub to start.

The components for 3 Stentorians and 4 Sten II comes to under $500 not including mdf for the enclosures.

I think the standard recommendation around here for a center and mains (assuming you dont have a projector setup) would be these guys

Mains (can be built as towers or monitors)

Center

Were you asking about who designed my speakers?

I designed my speakers, all the details are in the link in my sig.

Is your screen acoustically transparent? Three identical speakers would be ideal.
