I bought these speakers used a couple of weeks ago for my HT gaming room. With the exception of vibration, they filled the job fantastically for gaming, as I figured the vibration was coming from the walls and room treatments would cure that. Well, now I know the source of the vibration, its coming from the rear port, the plate amp and probably the sub as well! Is there any fix for this? The subs look to be in good shape and the screws are tight on it as well as the amp.

If you hold on the the speaker cabinet does the rattle stop? Have you tried spiking the speakers? You can contact DefTech directly and Chet should be able to send you a kit used for the BP2002. Did the same for me. fwiw - I do not have any vibrations in my front towers with them spiked through carpet into the sub floor.

They rattle a lo more than anythingt on those low tones from the Farcry3 game, thats how I noticed it. I have the knobs at 12. The speakers are spiked. The cabinets are solid. I put my ears very close to the source and it seems to be coming from the port/amp and possibly even the subs. Both speakers have good looking subs and all screws are tight. What did Chet send you? What was the problem of your vibration?

I also got my towers used and did not get the original set of spikes. Chet sent me a new set but not because i had a audible rattle like you describe.

Maybe check the internal wiring between amp and sub. Also some wires on the plate amp are hot glued in place. Could see if any glue/ seals came undone.

Hi Joe, yes I did. I spoke with Chet. He recommended I look inside the ports for a foreign object or something hanging, or even removing the plate amp for a look. If none of that shows anything it could be "flutter" from having only so big of an area (port) for the air to escape?

Hi Cleatus, I am glad you spoke to Chet. Yes, when really hammering the sound, it is possible that you can get a ported speaker to emit some chuffing noises. Let's check the mechanical stuff first. Best, Joe

Cleatus

I had a pair of BP2006s several years ago that I bought new that developed a rattle while I still owned them.

I removed the plate on the back of the speakers and found were positioned very close to a hard surface and once the the speakers begain working would bounce the capacitors against something hard causing the rattle. All I had to do was to move them a little.....using something that was insulated. Try not to fry yourself if you snooping in there.

I probably don't have to tell you this but the guys over at Def Tech are great to work with.

Hey Jim, A capacitor huh? Ok, I will look for that as well while keeping in mind that caps store electricity! eek.gifbiggrin.gif

I'll report back with my findings

Well, I looked inside the speakers and noticed no foreign objects, loose capacitors, nuts, screws or bolts. The transformer and circuit boards were secure. What I did notice is a lot of wires that aren't glued down or hot glued. They are still at or below 12 oclock on the dials. Most of the time they don't vibrate at all. It's just the low frequencies they can't handle without vibrating. This is while the volume is at an easy level

I would venture to say that you could possibly be hearing distortion?

I think the noise is due to too small internal area/port for the sub. I'm just going to turn them way down and use them for surround duty.

Are you checking them (internally) with them powered up and playing at the level that you hear the noise?

No, I haven't tried with them running. I'll try that as well but I'm thinking that they'll stop rattling (or chuffing)with the plate amp off.

I had the speakers running with the plate amps off and the vibration stopped although it did sound like they were distorting ever so slightly on the lowest signals. I inspected every part inside to make sure they were well secured. I removed and checked out the subs and they looked good. I then applied stick on weather stripping to the edge perimeter of the plate amps and subs and put it all back together. I now think the noise is either distortion or chuffing.
