ive been lurking and getting really interested in the tapped horns, but i am completely lost even after thumbing through the tutorials. im interested in using 2 12s i have available and hoping to get them efficient below 20Hz.

if anyone else has used hornresp and would be willing to help design something and show me around the program, it would be appreciated.

Which 12's would those be?

The good news - they should work reasonably well in a TH, provided the factory specs are accurate. The bad news - they're too excursion limited to get below 20Hz with much SPL, I'm afraid.

I'd probably go for around 22-25Hz with the pair of them, myself. Below 20, there are better options out there.

thats the problem i was running into, no matter what i did, i would reach linear limits. i have one of the 12s in a sonosub setup right now. i was hoping that i could use 2 in a TH and reach a lower tuning, but i guess not.

what if i modified the plans into a THT? im thinking the sealed chamber would help lower excursion. can hornresp cover the details of a THT?

The designer of the THT would be the one to ask about that.

You can do a sub 20Hz horn with those drivers, but it may end up being disappointing when it comes to max SPL.

What speaker would be a good one for the horn design? I have a 300w yung amp to use for the sub.

I have the same question with a different driver. I have read the tutorial posted by lilmike, and know more than i did last night.... but I am not having success after putting in the parameters of my driver. I will keep trying but in the meantime I was hoping that someone would chime in and give me an idea if this is feasible.
My driver is a RCF - LF21N451 http://www.rcf.it/products/precision-transducers/neodymium-low-frequency-transducers/lf21n451
It states that it would work in a horn FWIW. I currently have this in a sealed box and am enjoying it but want to see if a TH would be a better application for it.

For a sub 20Hz tapped horn? There's only a couple I'd try a single driver design with down that low - the Kicker CVX 15" and the Sundown 15 Zv3.

It'll likely work, but you're looking at a huge box.

You weren't kidding, it is modelling out massive. In the interest of being the engine that could I am going to keep trying. Using the EasyHorn spreadsheet for Excel by soho54 (Thank You!) in conjunction with Hornresp has kept me trying out possibilities. I've no idea what compression this size of a driver can handle nor have I been able to keep excursion under control. At around 28hz it skyrockets once I throw any wattage at it. Oh well, if it was easy everyone would be doing it and it wouldn't be as cool. wink.gif I am trying for output down to 20hz.

Nothing wrong with trying. Gotta start somewhere wink.gif

That spreadsheet saves a lot of time.

20Hz with a fair bit of output should be easy to get from a 21," but I haven't done a lot of modeling with drivers that size. Too expensive. I don't like to waste my time on something I can't afford. There's also the danger that you might need such a big horn to get any advantage over a vented box that it becomes impractical. I still prefer using multiple smaller drivers, though that will only take you so far.

Yes, best to try something to get some experience.

I was lucky in that I had a fixed space for my sub to go and already had the speakers. So didn't have to mull over those details. I didn't fall in love with any particular box type. I only knew that I had limited power and needed something more efficient then sealed.

Can you just decided on a maximum volume and size the woofer, box etc... to fit? Easier said than done of course. Bass horns seem to be an uncompromising solution to loud and low. Fits some rooms just fine. smile.gif

IF you did make two smaller horns they might be more easy to sell if you still were not happy.

Good Luck!

"can hornresp cover the details of a THT?"

yes. underneath "re" you can click on the TH for tapped horn and it will change to different kinds of configurations. OD would be what you would use to model a tht.

you will also need to enter something into "vrc" for the volume of the sealed rear chamber.

....................

"My driver is a RCF - LF21N451"

that one can work fine in a tapped horn or a front loaded horn.

here are some specs to help at least get you started:

"I currently have this in a sealed box and am enjoying it..."

you could pick up a whole bunch of spl (6-12db) by simply going to a large ported enclosure vs. a sealed.

Listen. It's All Good.

"What about the LMSR, no?"

yeah. we designed a huge one for a guy in germany that turned out pretty good...then he upgraded it to an lms-u.

You're treading murky waters asking a question like that, Tom has a patent on the Tapped Horn design, and allows the DIY community to use it in principle without any interference. Not personally knowing him, I would not recommend doing any direct copies of his designs. There are tons of great TH designs though around here depending on your application.
