I am upgrading my home audio system with a Denon 1912, replacing (dont laugh) Logitech Z5500 pushing the powered sub and some inwall Polk audio speakers.

I have to find a new sub for the application. I have a Kicker L7 12" sub that is sitting in the garage collecting dust. I was thinking about getting a Plate Amp or something to power it from the Denon AVR.

My budget is <$250 if possible. But I am open to hearing other options for budget and different style amp (rack vs plate) as long as I can tune the sub/amp to fit the application.

What's the question? Will the kicker L7 work? Sure give it a whirl cause you already have it.

Also, would the result be better or worse than if i spent the money on a powered sub in the same price range i am wanting to spend?

DIY sub with ~$250 amp vs Consumer Powered Sub ~$250

The nu1000dsp would be a good start, it has the best balance of features and watts for the price.
Otherwise just get the most powerful plate amp you can afford from PE, it wouldn't be as good as the dsp though (most likely).

Thank you!

Can I still run the LFE output from the AVR to the nu1000dsp or is it better to run a pre-amp output to it?

It should be fine. Many people have been running Behringer amps off the LFE preout from AVRs.

Sounds Good to Me... keeping track of my audio projects.

If it helps, I run my Denon 1712 pre-out to a Crown XLS 1000 and can clip the amp with no problems - i.e. driving it full power. Input sensitivity of the Berry should be similar.

Isn't the lfe out on most AVRs the same as the subwoofer pre-out? I don't see what the difference would be? Just pick up a Behringer EP4000 or an EP1500, both of which are in your budget and should be more than enough power wide. I do not like the iNukes due to them not going down to below 20hz. You can buy the Behringer and then later pick up a MiniDsp. Hook up using the subwoofer pre-out to the Behringer input using an RCA to TLR 1/4 cable. I am seriously looking forward to seeing how the Kicker L7 will work in a theater setting!

The LFE, to my understanding gets its own crossover setting when using the MultiEQ setting. Not sure the pre-amps do.

Do you think the L7 will be good or bad in a HT setting?
