So I kind of just went for it and ordered the 15" Ultimax driver, and a flat pack from DIY sound group. Think I'll probably get the SPA1000 plate amp from PE as well.

As I get everything In I'll take some pictures for those who are like me and have no idea what the hell it is they are doing smile.gif

List of parts for those curious:

I just ordered 2 of these about an hour ago, and my flat packs should be here tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing your build, I'm going to have to make a build thread too. Good luck!

Shady, I was looking at building the exact same thing except with a BASH 500w plate amp.

Can't wait to see your builds guys!

Yeah i was debating the BASH as well, but figure the extra output would do good in my room as well as the PEQ

Excited to see how this will hold up against my RW-12D, I'd imagine it will be substantially better, just excited to get some measurements.

This will obliterate the RW12D above 30hz. Response below that will depend on your room. SQ should be much better as well, the Klipsch is cheaply made.

Well im hoping Ill be able to get loud enough below 30HZ, to be honest the RW-12D falls pretty fast below 30hz for me now, but even below 30hz its plenty loud for me, especially once audyssey tuned it. So im hoping with the PEQ and audyssey I can get decent volume down to around 20-25hz

Interested in your results Shady! I might go this route, Dayton 18HO in 4cuft flat pack .....or MAYBE dual 15" Ultimax's. Who knows. Love to hear how they blend with the e55's also!biggrin.gif

Oh...btw....are you going to have to do the cutting for the plate amp or can he do that?

^ That box will be perfect for the Ultimax from the t/s specs I've seen run (using WinISD I believe). Braced and everything!!

Shady, how do you plan on using the plate amp w/ all that bracing??

I am also very interested in the OP's end results! I wonder how this U15 will stack up against the HO15 and the HF15, or possibly even the Stereo Integrity 15" driver? Which sub is the better performer with regards to extension and output in the ultra low frequency and mid-bass regions?

I spoke with Erich, they are designed to allow you to cutout a spot for the plate amp. He said while it does cut into the bracing that connects to the back of the box, it does not harm the integrity. Also I do plan at somepoint running two of thes emyself if this turns out as good as I hope wink.gif

and easy fellas im as excited as you, it will be a few weeks before this gets done though.. have a pretty busy few weeks ahead of me in the real world

So i decided instead of using the Dayton SPA1000 amp im just going to get the NU1000DSP.

I guess my nerdy side got to me and the ability to adjust the amp from my laptop and being able to adjust more easily when I set it up (plus having more awesome looking gear to show off to people) pushed me towards going the external amp route.

Filled in most of the screw holes last night with wood filler. Going to sand those down and then I think I may Spackle the edges so I can get that clean "one piece" look out of the box.

good idea going for the dsp model. in 3 cubic feet that driver will benefit from some boost on the low end for sure.

i'd suggest going for the 3000dsp, that way when you want to get the second one, you'll already have your amp. :-)

Listen. It's All Good.

Did some more work on the box over the weekend (super busy lately and the last thing I want to do, even though im so anxious to get this done is sand/prep and prime)

Got all the seams covered up with my old friend Plastic Wood. Sanded it all down and got it nice and smooth. Started to prime it, but after I primed most of the box I noticed a few high spots that upon first touch seemed smooth. Going to do a bit more sanding, re-prime and paint.

Sanded everything down, did a few coats of primer, quick sand of the primer and put the first coat of paint on. Just using a semi flat black oil based enamel for paint..

Will sand down and do another coat tommorrow.. going to try and do 3 coats all together and see if I can get what I want.

One two sides with the first coat the seems are barely visible, must have sanded down the wood fill just a bit to much. A couple of filled holes with screws also have a very slight noticeable edge. Everything felt smooth to the toch but just took a little to much off, Hoping with a couple more coats everything looks pretty seamless.

Look very sleek so far. I love the simplicity and protection of Duratex, but I don't find the look as appealing as a nice paint job like this, or veneer with stain.

Use a roller as wide as the enclosure for the nicest finish.

Yeah, I started to use a smaller roller thinking for some stupid reason it would be better (I think my wifes logic has been spilling over to me at times) and then used a big roller and not only did it take less time it was much nicer!

Also, hoping to have this completely done by next week. I had my credit card number stolen and while I wait for the bank to dick around, (thank god My bills got paid first) im holding off on ordering the AMP. Had my wifes birthday and whatnot. Trying not to blow all my money Like I have a terrible habbit of doing.

Just got done with the second coat.. Little aggrivated, something stirred up some dust/animal hair that was lingering in the basment.. Got some particles in the paint.. Gonna be more careful on the final coat.

It look pretty textured when wet.. but when I went down when i got home from work it was completely dry and looked really smooth aside from a few areas.. I think itll come out alright all said and done
