Is there any way to buy just enough to do one or two of Erich's flat packs with this stuff? People are telling me a gallon will do what sounds like a rediculous amount of stuff.. I was simply wanting to paint two of them.. it looks like the trial size probably wouldnt cover two 18" flat packs, and a gallon is way too much.. I'd rather not spend the extra money on something i know i wont use.. I want to go the DIY route to dave money, and spending $75 just to paint the boxes kind fo defeats that purpose in my eyes. Do they sell it by the quart anywhere?

Thanks for the help

I used the trial size for two Fusion 8's and still have about half left. saved the rest in a pint size canning jar. Squeeze out the foam roller under warm water when finished has the roller looking new again for the next use.

Go to Home Depot/Lowes and get some other kind of textured paint.

Have you tried Duratex? It's worth it.

Yes. Actually, I just painted 4 cabs with it a few days ago (12" sub, 18" sub, and 2 bookshelf speakers). However, some other kind of textured paint should work for the TC if he feels that a gallon of Duratex costs too much.

I would buy a can of flat black spray paint and spray it on as your first coat. The Duratex would then not need a full two coats as it does without this method. I think that would stretch it out enough to do your project. That said I've now ordered a gallon for 4 Alpha Zephyr kits coming my way. Funny enough Speakerhardware.com's shipping rate made it cheaper to purchase the Duratex by the gallon from them.

nice, you are right, with the brush and a gallon, you save about 4 bucks eek.gif lol. im thinking ill just bite the bullet and get a gallon. siince i have no painting or woodwork type experience, i guess it couldnt hurt to get more than, rather than less of everything, just to be safe, and leave myself a learning curve. Im guessing ill be inspired after building these. who knows, maybe ill use it all up.

What I am noticing though.. when it comes to DIY, you spend quite a bit on your first go around, if you are like me and dont have much tools to work with.. Someone said to me "Buy two of these flat packs and two of these subs and boom, you got a way better deal then going ID". Now that im actually in the process of making it happen, and factoring in screws, paints, primers, speaker wire, amp, cables, polyfil, wood glue, clamps, speaker feet, binding posts... you get the idea. Dont get me wrong, im still excited as hell.. Just kinda funny when i sat back and thought about it. not to mention the countless hours of reading threads on these forums, so as to have a clue as to what im doing wink.gif

It's definitely worth it if you can get it. It's so easy to apply. Also, if you put a few sprinkles of water on the top before you close the lid then it should last for a very long time in storage.

If it helps... I have done 4 of Eric's SI 18" boxes and am getting ready to do 2 more. I think it will be about the whole gallon for 6 total and I put at least 2 coats on each with no primer.

No it didnt ship as far as i see. he responded yesterday and said he would be packaging them when he got home from work, but it still just says processing as of now. Wish it would come. my wood glue, wire and connectors, along with some other assorted stuff (ground loop isolator, lets see if it does a better job with the hum than my ghetto rig did), all came in today. Im ready to start working on something..

Waiting for Erich is a much shorter process then building your own boxes from scratch ;-) Well worth the wait!

Use the wait time to read about Room EQ wizard and calibrating them!

I have some leftover from a build I just finished. It's about 1/2 gallon (I can verify if you're interested). I also have another unopened gallon container that I didn't need. Both are the roll-on version.

I think if they sold it by the half gallon they'd move double of what they do.

There are tons of folks who are building one or two subs (and that's it, believe it or not) and simply cannot justify the $75 to cover them in paint.

I understand the OPs POV and agree with him.

Prior to my introducing DuraTex to the DIY world they hardly sold any one gallon containers, and not that many five gallon either. It mostly went to manufacturers in 55 gal. drums. The DIY market is literally just a drop in the bucket to Acry-Tech. Even DuraTex is a small part of their overall business; it takes a lot of speakers to equal one Walmart roof. eek.gif
The good news with DuraTex is that the DIYer is able to get it at all.

After trying to paint my latest subwoofer, I'm thinking I should have just gone with Duratex. I was also thinking about the black "hammertone" spray paint but it's also kind of expensive and I'm worried how it will come out.

If I got the duratex I'd be going for the least amount of texture possible. Also, how much is shipping usually for such a big heavy bucket?

Fair enough. It would just seem to me that if they take the time and effort to move to one gallon quants, half of that would just as feasible, and if it makes more $$$, well, you know, lol.

It's kind of like telling Boeing that they'd sell a lot more aircraft if they concentrated on 2 seaters instead of Dreamliners. wink.gif

What about a pint?

They even include a small 3" roller.

Nick,

You should have directed me to this thread so that I knew who you were. That would have helped a lot.

I wouldn't say it was Paypal nonsense. wink.gif You have to understand that I have no idea who it is that's ordering on the site anymore. So when Paypal shows it's an unconfirmed address and unverified Paypal account, it slows things down. And when the shipping address is different than the billing address.....well that worries me. And when the person then emails a lot more than average to see when the package is going to ship......that worries me even more. biggrin.gif

The reason it worries me is that same thing has happened twice before and the person kept asking for a tracking number in a similar fashion. Like 8 times. Well that was because he wanted to track the package and get it off someone else's front porch when it arrived at the different shipping address. And with unverified everything, and different addresses, well I'm sure you see the problem. I lost $600 on some Deltalites and a couple hundred on some MFW 15" subwoofers when I was helping with those. So I'm more careful now because there's no protection for me what so ever in a situation like that. From what Paypal has said, most people on Ebay or other places will simply cancel the order.

But it was all straightened out. Sorry that it aggravated you, but sadly I have to be more careful about things.

You can confirm your alternate shipping address on paypal. I have everything shipped to my work as well but I have that address verified. Makes it easier in cases like this.
