i have decided to build a Big Mal to use as my center channel. i am currently using one of my Crites CS1-T's laying on its side. it actually works great sitting straight on, but i want better performance off to the sides. i would think the Big Mal would have a little more output as well. Im crossing the CS1-T at 80 and I'll be crossing Big M at 80 as well. I ordered the matte finish SEOS 12 and the DNA-360 driver from DIYSoundgroup.com and bought 4 Aurasound NS6's off Ebay. mtg90 is building the crossover for me. ill build the box including the motorboard myself.

im actually surprised there has not been more build threads on these. Not all of us have the ability to use a AT screen and this beast of a center will fit under any screen. its a very cool design, hopefully giving me the performance of using an upright speaker with the low profile i require to fit under my screen. I know Erich and BWaslo, etc. have some centers coming out soon, but i really like this design so i decided not to wait.

Cool!

Ya I think it hasn't been built more because a lot of guys are going phantom center.

Good luck with the build. Look forward to your impressions.

i dont mind a phantom center when sitting in the middle seat, but once you move off to the side, i really prefer a dedicated center channel to anchor the sound. hopefully this bad boy keeps up with my Cornscalas better as well.

so this thread is up a total of 20 minutes and Erich PM's me to ask if i would like a baffle! Well, as a matter of fact sir, i would. Thank you very much!! WHAT KIND OF CRAZY SERVICE IS THAT? wink.gif

i was going to do my own because A. i didnt kow Erich had any and B. i want the baffle to be birch so i can stain it. after Erich's PM, it dawned on me that i could just veneer Erich's MDF baffle so im going to do that.

So what makes you think that this will be a step up from your current CS-1's? I have my doubts that you will notice any improvements, but I could be wrong, I am, however, very interested in hearing how you compare the Big Mal to the CS-1!

i think most of the improvement will come from just having a better driver orientation. when i could have the CS1 standing up it worked great, but laying on its side makes it very inconsistent off axis, especially if your sitting more on the side of the woofer. the hopes of better performance other than that are minor honestly.

i will try and do a direct comparison with the CS1 both standing up and on its side. maybe even attempt some measurements as well.

Move screen up a few inches and rotate your current center?

Screen cannot go any higher. There is duct work that prevents the pj from being higher and I'm out of lens shift.

now that you have me thinking about it, i could make a shelf attached to the joists and have the PJ right side up. that would give me more lens shift and allow the screen to be higher............... oh well, everything is already ordered for the Big M so no turning back now!

I think you'll notice quite an improvement with the vertical orientation. 4 x 6" woofers are no slouch either. Should be pretty good biggrin.gif

Why not just take the drivers and horn out of the CS-1's and build a new box for them to be oriented horizonal, ie turn the horn sideways?

Wouldn't make much difference. The horn is a Tractrix design and actually works fine oriented that way. It's having the woofer right to the side of it that causes the issue. It's the same problem MTM designs have.

Actually, Bob Crites has a MTM design with the same horn oriented vertically.

Which woofer, compression driver and horn did you use in your Crites CS-1T? I wonder how the quad NS6 drivers will compare to the woofer that you used in the CS-1T, in both the low and mid bass department?

The CS-1's use the Crites CW1228 woofer. Selenium D220TI OMF compression driver. And a Faital Pro LTH102 Tractrix horn.

I really can't guess how they will compare. I'm thinking the 4 6" drivers may have a little more output. Also maybe wider dispersion due to their horizontal orientation and the x-over split between the inner and outer drivers.

How did you like that Selenium 220Ti compression driver? I will likely use that in my CornScala build sometime down the road.

its been a while since i have listened to the CS-1's as a pair but i liked them. i can tell you they are not as smooth as the Faital Pro 1.4 driver in my Cornscalas. i will have to listen to them again before i sell them.

i listened to some music the other day with the CS-1'a and my opinion is the same. they sound great. nice and even. very good detail. The 1.4" driver on the Cornscala is on another level though. of course they cost more than 4 times as much as the Selenium in the CS-1.

update. i received my SEOS 12 and DNA-360 the other day. packaging was excellent just as others have said. the SEOS 12 is very nice. very solid. no worries of resonances with these things!

im still waiting to hear back from Erich regarding the baffle then ill get the box built.

Turns out I'm not going to build this. If someone wants to build one, I have the four NS6 drivers and a cross over built by mtg90 to do it. Pm me if interested.

What made you change your mind?
Are you unhappy with the performance? or is it just wrong place/wrong time?
