In the past you talked about designing a surround version of the 1099. Is this still in the works? I'm currently using Fusion 8's. I could probably use Fusion 10's though.

I find that any "clear", distortion free, high sensitivity speaker, when turned to pretty loud volume levels of like 95 dB at LP ( which I assume you guys had it loud at the gtg) and you're sitting relatively close (like 15 feet or closer) will sound a bit "bright", as our ears are more sensitive to high freq SPL than low freq SPL. Which is why this is the best listening curve to EQ to for SEOS speakers in a normal room, in my opinion.

I don't remember that. Perhaps I was referring to the Fusion 10?

I agree with you about SPL and listening distance, etc. Joe's theatre does have a close seating arrangement. Probably less than 10ft from the speakers. This puts us in a nearly nearfield situation. But that curve is a little bit over-cooked if you ask me. 10db from 80hz to 20khz! That seems a bit much.

Here's some measurements of the Fusion 10 with the SEOS10 since it's being talked about. I just uploaded these and haven't even given them to Erich. Still need to do that package of info for him. I'm slow.

On axis, 30d and 60d.

Yes, when the speaker are behind my false wall/AT screen it's basically 11ft from speakers to ears.

I thought the 1096 was going to be the Fusion 10 pure. What happened to the mids in the Fusion 10? Also as a surround would the mids SEOS10 and 250 be a good solution? it would match tremble perfectly right?

Hi Bill,

Not sure where that idea came from. They've always been called different things. The Fusion 10 is a continuation from a speaker that was designed close to two years ago now. Just updated for the smaller waveguide that's now available. The 1096 is something for very specific applications where there is no room for the second woofer. It has 3db less sensitivity on its low end also.

The mid and SEOS10 section of the 1099 could be used if you eliminated a few of the high pass components, but it'll have a pretty weak low end. I'd use something else personally. And getting the components from Erich would probably be a pain for him to divy up.

This is what I am referring to:

I don't get to sticky if someone wants to change dimensions. For surrounds, most people need to alter dimensions. The woofer needs about 1 cu ft though. Tuning can range from 50 to 70hz. The original tower I tuned around 50hz and felt it was a little bit to lean. That was also only 0.75 cu ft. In the end I'd say 1 cu ft and 60hz is better. For surrounds you could also go sealed and go smaller yet. The woofer can do sealed. I use it in my own theatre sealed. But it doesn't do it's best sealed. Has an F3 around 90 or 100hz. Gradual roll off though.

I see. I was talking about the Fusion 10 when I said that. 2 way TM version is SEOS10 and Delta 10A. Sorry, I wasn't very clear back when I said that I guess.

I was in Best Buy yesterday looking to see if they have a Benq projector I could demo. As I was walking past one of the rooms, I heard a set of speakers that blew me away. It was right then that I knew what my system is missing. Mid Bass. I have none. I've always liked my speakers (B&W DM 603 S2), but knew something was missing. Even with 4 18" subs, I have no mid bass.

Based on the feedback thus far, the 1099's will solve that. I'm ordering three as soon as they come back in.

Question... How tall of a box will I need to build in order to put the SEO at ear level?

What speaker did you hear that was impressive ?
The 1099 doesn't have great midbass. It has great midrange and highs. The tempest has better midbass if that's what your craving.

^ ditto.

However, two 10s in that arrangement can probably put out more midbass if you eq them that way. Naturally the tempest does have more if you just wanna book 'em up and go. But it also can't be used as a center.....

I didn't stop to look and see what they were. But I bet the woofer was no bigger than 8". Midbass was probably incorrect. I also have to keep in mind that the Best Bug Magnolia rooms are treated and my room is not. I just started with the treatments. That said, the speakers had a "tone" that I don't currently have. I guess I don't know how to describe it other than a rich / full tone. Not too bright.

In my room I am fighting ceramic tile and tall ceilings.

What is your ear height? The box is 36" with the tweeter about 18" from the top.

The one I built today is 54" tall which puts the waveguide at about 38"

Is there any particular crossover layout you think is best, tux? I layed out everything the way fatshaft did to make sure the piece of hardboard I cut was big enough and that layout fit. Two of the inductors are parallel to each other (physically, not electrically) but they're at least 3" apart center to center

I thought I should finally join and post on here since I have been lurking and learning on this site for years. All of my toys should be here by Thursday and I am completely stoked! Three 1099's and two uxl-18's. The Duratex, speakons and 6000dsp have already arrived. I also have a roll of linacoustic on the way. Hope I can figure out the crossovers. I will be asking all sorts of questions I am sure and I will start a build thread once I get going. I feel like a kid at Christmas. Enough gushing, now back to your regularly scheduled program.
