I have some old TEAC Lsr-100 bookshelf speakers. I opened one up and there is no crossover in this speaker. There are 3 poles on the tweeter, 1 positive and 2 negative. Negative side has a cap connected to the 2 poles. It is a one inch mylar dome tweeter 6 ohms mated with a four inch 8 ohm woofer.
There is a larger cap attached to the positive pole of the speaker input. My question is, if I put in a pre-built 2-way crossover can I leave these caps out, and if so does it matter which pole I use on the negative side of the tweeter? Thanks

What you have is a First Order Crossover. The Capacitor is used as a High Frequency cutoff from the tweeter to the Input on the Woofer/Mid. http://www.amprepairparts.com/xovercaps.htm http://www.colomar.com/Shavano/crossover6db.html http://www.diyaudioandvideo.com/FAQ/Crossover/

gregzoll, Thanks for your response. I had no idea there were different orders. The last time I opened a speaker box was on an old late sixties console stereo that revealed a huge pair of Jensen loudspeakers with tweeters and had a friend build some boxes for
me. Great speakers and very loud no distortion. Wish I still had them.. Thanks again...

Usually just in PA speakers you would find First order, or low end Car speakers. We used them all the time on the shipboard MC speakers, especially on the PA horns.

A new off the shelf crossover isn't likely to improve the sound of those speakers if that is all you change. Just replace the caps with the same values as they are likely out of spec due to age.

mobeer4don, the biggest problem is that those drivers are probably dried out on the cones and surrounds, so even if they replace the caps, they still have old speakers that would not take much to separate the surrounds on them from the frame.

Thought I would up load some pics of cabinet woofer and tweeter. Speaker was working when disconnected 2 yrs. ago. I am currently using 2 of them now. I wanted to experiment
with this one. To my untrained eye although old and used the speaker ( box, woofer, tweeter, grill) look to be in mint condition. The box is well built, braced and ported in the rear. Cabinet dimensions: 8-1/4" H x 5-1/8" W x 7-5/16" D, just a little smaller than overnight sensations: 6" wide x 9" tall x 8.5" deep.
See pics.. Comments welcome...

That's not that old. Half of my speakers are 30+ years old. biggrin.gif

Certainly worth spending a few $ for new electrolytic caps. Shipping might push the total past $10....
